1 BBC Children in Need announce £3m Youth Social Action Fund

BBC Children in Need, in partnership with the #iwill Fund and The Hunter Foundation, has announced they are delivering a £3million fund to support organisations to embed youth social action across the UK.

The BBC Children in Need Youth Social Action Fund will help to build children and young people’s confidence and skills and will empower them to take an active and leading role in developing solutions to issues which affect their lives and their communities. Social action involves activities such as influencing, fundraising and volunteering, all of which enable young people to make a positive difference in their communities as well as develop their own skills and knowledge.

The fund especially aims to reach:

  • organisations who focus on addressing issues of disadvantage affecting children and young people
  • children and young people who have some experience of social action and want to develop their skills and experience to do more.
  • children and young people who have no experience of social action work at all but want to find out what it is all about.
To apply to this fund, you must sign up to a one hour information session. If you cannot make a session, they will send you the link to a recorded session. They are only making application forms available to organisations who have attended an information session or have received a recorded session. Sign up to an information session by the 8th April.

2 The Road Safety Trust Small Grants

The main aim of the Small Grants Programme is to improve road safety at a local level.

We are looking for measurable interventions that link to local priorities and show a proposed link to reducing casualties either directly or through clear interim measures. Eligible projects are pilots/trials, expanding successful trials across a new area, and/or the evaluation of interventions. Projects should have the potential for being brought to scale - with the ultimate goal of reducing deaths and injuries both locally and across the UK.

The maximum project length under this grant programme is 24 months. In 2022 the minimum amount is £10,000 and the maximum is £30,000 over two years in total. All small grants projects should have other sources of funding, cash or in-kind.

4 Lifelong Learning Festival & Learning Hubs
 

Derry and Strabane Learning City are hosting their 2nd Lifelong Learning Festival in April (25-29) 2022. 

The Lifelong Learning Festival is a key part of our plan to raise awareness of Derry and Strabane as a learning city. Derry and Strabane joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in 2019 with a focus on using learning to tackle inequalities, by removing barriers to learning, making learning accessible to everyone in the city, and, crucially, making learning enjoyable.

The festival aim is to showcase the wonderful range of learning opportunities that already exists in the Derry City and Strabane region and encourage the participation of people of all age groups, backgrounds, and locations.

As part of the festival, we are hosting 2 learning hubs in The Alley Theatre on the 31st of March, and Foyleside Shopping Centre on the 1st of April, both are running from 12pm-5pm.

The purpose of the Hubs is to promote the festival, and to offer bitesize learning opportunities that will encourage learners of all ages to take up something new!

5 Can you spot low health literacy? Training opportunity

Health literacy is about our knowledge, skills, understanding and confidence to be able to use health and care information and services to make good health decisions (Western Health Literacy Delivery Partnership 2019)

This is a 2.5hr facilitated and interactive online training session, facilitated by Community Development & Health Network (CDHN) via Zoom. It will help participants to become more aware of the health literacy needs of the people they support, identify low health literacy levels, and equip them with practical tools and techniques to develop their health literacy practice.  Content will be developed to ensure activities, break out room discussions and examples have a focus on mental health, emotional wellbeing, and suicide prevention.

Who for?
This course is designed for Good Relations Officers, Project Officers, Community Relations Officers and anyone who work with diverse groups.
 
Workshop Aims

  • To introduce participants to the principles of Conflict Management and the use of Mediation as tool for resolving conflict.
  • Explain to participants that Mediation is a process, which helps people in dispute to have a difficult conversation with each other that enables them to work through their issues and hopefully reach an agreeable outcome.
  • To give participants an overview of the Learning Outcomes for the course and explain the Northern Ireland Open College Network Accreditation procedure.
Objectives
At the end of the Workshop the participants will be able to: -
  • Identify different ways people deal with conflict
  • Be aware of the skills of a mediator
  • Have an understanding of how mediation works in practice
  • Help disputing parties create their own agreements
  • Understand the advantages and disadvantages of co-mediation.

9  Join our conversation on the future of travel, our streets and places

Imtac has launched a conversation about how we ensure that travel, our streets and places are inclusive and accessible in the future. You can view the draft paper

The past two years have been hugely challenging for everyone but in many ways COVID simply highlighted and worsened the inequalities experienced by Deaf people, disabled people and older people before the pandemic happened. 
 
For the past year Imtac members have been looking at what needs to change to ensure a post-pandemic society is fairer and more inclusive. This conversation cannot ignore the challenge of climate change and how we ensure a just transition to Net Zero. We have produced a draft paper detailing key principles and priority actions we believe are essential parts of delivering accessible and inclusive travel, streets and places. We have attached a word version of the paper. Copies in other formats are available by contacting us directly.
 
Before we publish the paper we want to have a conversation with Deaf people, disabled people, older people, carers and others including service providers and policy makers. We are looking for feedback about the paper and particularly want to hear about important issues which you think haven't been addressed.
 
You can get involved in the conversation in a number of ways:

  • We will be running a series of online workshops using ZOOM. The first two workshops will take place on Tuesday 29th March (12.30pm - 2pm and 7.00pm - 8.30pm)
  • We have developed a short online survey for people to give feedback
  • We would encourage people to give us feedback and comments by contacting us directly by telephone or email
  • We are also happy to attend physical or virtual meetings organised by stakeholders to discuss the paper

This is a socially distanced drop off and pick up service. Please follow the instructions below to help us keep everyone safe.


Hearing aids must be placed in a labelled envelope with name and contact details. They will be collected at the entrance and brought inside for maintenance.  Users can wait in their car or return later to collect hearing aids. Hearing aids can be dropped off by friends or family members.

14 Public Appointment Competition: Certification Officer for NI

The Department for the Economy will be advertising an open competition on 24th and 25th March 2022 in the three main local papers to recruit a new Certification Officer (CO) for Northern Ireland.

A public appointment gives individuals from different backgrounds and with specific skills and experience a chance to help make decisions that affect all our lives. Public appointments are a great opportunity to give something back to the community, whilst developing your own skills.

The CO is an independent statutory person. The CO's functions include maintaining lists of trade unions and employers’ associations, certifying the independence of unions, ensuring that proper accounting records are kept and annual returns are made, overseeing mergers, investigating the financial affairs of unions and employers’ associations and approving political fund rules of Northern Ireland-based unions. The CO is also responsible for determining complaints concerning trade union elections, certain other ballots, and trade union rules.

The post is pensionable. The rate of remuneration for the CO is currently £22,274 per annum (based on two days’ work per week). The CO is also eligible to claim allowances, at Northern Ireland Civil Service rates, for travel and subsistence costs necessarily incurred on official business.

The CO will initially be appointed for a term of five years. Subject to satisfactory performance, the CO may be offered reappointment at the end of their term for a further period of five years.

People with a disability and those from minority ethnic communities are currently under-represented and applications from the members of those groups would be particularly welcome. We are operating a Guaranteed Interview Scheme for applicants with a disability.

No academic qualifications are required for the post. Appointment will be made from a merit based pool of candidates who best satisfy the criteria.
