This will be an interactive but intimate event based on the 'Human Library' concept were real people, in this case volunteers, are like a book that is on loan to members of the public to read and find out more about, asking questions and having meaningful conversations. Volunteers will be representing a range of local voluntary organisations who will also be attending and actively recruiting volunteers on the day.
The Public Health Agency, through the Clear Project, are offering constituted voluntary sector sports clubs in the Western Trust area the opportunity to avail of training, which will help them support their members. Due to the cost of living increase the new amount available has also been increased to to £500 to spend on relevant sports equipment for their club.
Equipment requested should help the club develop activities that meet the needs of the local community and support the delivery of the ‘Take 5 Steps to Wellbeing’.

We are delighted to announce the launch of the second year of the Tacking Textiles Grant: Skills and Innovation. This follows the successful pilot grant last year, where we supported five different projects across Northern Ireland.
We are looking for your ideas that support tackling textile waste through waste prevention, reuse, repair and reimagine.
Waste Prevention: Materials and design innovation is critical to the future of a circular economy. By preventing waste at the design stage of product development, we can have consumption that is healthier and performs better for our people and the planet.
Reuse/Repair Models: Reuse and repair are essential in the development of a more circular economy. Reuse of products and materials is more beneficial as it retains a product’s inherent value by keeping it in use for longer. This minimises waste, create jobs, has positive social impact, reduces consumption, and associated carbon impacts.
Reimagine: Climate change is real; we know the impact; we know we must act, and we know that we must make changes to our current model of ‘take-make-dispose.’ We are looking for new ways to tackle the problem of production, consumption, and disposal of textile waste with the aim of creating a more circular textile economy.

The Community Grants for British Science Week 2024 are now open for applications!
Supported by UK Research and Innovation, Community Grants help eligible community groups to organise events and activities for their audiences during British Science Week (8-17 March 2024), expanding the number of people who enjoy and take part in science.
For British Science Week 2024, we’re offering grants of £500 and £1000 to community groups that work with people who are typically underrepresented in science, and which set out to deliver an event or activity that involves the local community, challenges science stereotypes and inspires ongoing science engagement.
The deadline for applications is 11.59pm on Monday 6 November 2023, so be sure to complete your form in good time!

DoJ and partners are holding a series of Victim Charter Awareness Sessions for those working in the voluntary and community sector. The Victim Charter sets out the entitlements and services that victims of crime in Northern Ireland can expect to receive from a range of service providers.
These entitlements are protected by law. The sessions will provide an overview of what the Charter means and why it is important for victims.
Why should I attend? We want to ensure that those working in the voluntary and community sector understand why the Charter is important and that they are able to signpost victims to relevant information.
Who should come along? Staff and volunteers who come into contact with victims of crime.

30th November 10.30 – Belfast in-person event
Sessions will last approximately 2hrs.

This is a two-day programme which uses experiential learning. The workshop is suitable for mental health professionals and counsellors. It provides an opportunity to enhance the awareness of their own anger. In addition, as participants gain greater awareness of these aspects of themselves, they will gain greater insight as to how to help their clients explore their own anger. This workshop will provide practical tools that will enhance the participant’s capacity to work with clients who are angry.
The Elevate programme is offering free online training around using community development approaches as ways to reduce health inequalities.
COVID-19 has increased the visibility of inequalities across different communities and these interactive training workshops will explore community development values and actions and how your role can help to build capacity in the communities where you work, volunteer or live.

Understanding the values and principles of community development
Understanding what health inequalities are, why they exist and how they look in your community
Recognising the challenges and opportunities that have happened through COVID-19
Exploring how your role can make a difference locally
Who is the training for?
Anyone with an interest in community development and health inequalities including staff and volunteers in voluntary organisations, community groups, councils, health and social care and government agencies.
This training event will offer youth workers, teachers and community workers the tools and resources to deliver altruism workshops.

Over the course of the training you will learn more about altruism and how this can help improve mental health and well-being. You will hear some of the findings from a research project we done in partnership with Queen's University Belfast. We will also share with you, our new resource, including session plan and worksheets to deliver the workshop with your young people. Each participant will receive a copy of the resource to print off as needed.

11 FWIN Book Club Presents Hush-A-Bye-Baby Film Screening
FWIN BOOK CLUB PRESENTS: Hush-A-Bye-Baby and Director’s Q+A with Margo Harkin

FWIN’s Book Club Book of the Month is Sinead O’Connor’s Autobiography “Rememberings.” What better way to remember Sinead, than to speak with the Derry Girls that worked with her?
Set in Derry in 1984, “Hush-A-Bye-Baby” follows the lives of four school friends (Goretti, Majella, Sinead and Dinky) who live in the Bogside and Creggan estates. At the age of 15 they are full of youthful exuberance and boys feature largely in their interests.
The film explores Irish attitudes to sexuality at a time when religion was an important foundation of social behaviour. Lead actress Emer McCourt won several international awards for her performance as Goretti. The film features the acting debut of the young Sinéad O’Connor who also wrote the musical score.
After the screening we will have a Q+A with local female director Margo Harkin. This is a fantastic opportunity to get the behind-the-scenes scoop on the film, so have your questions ready. This screening is free of charge and is part of the FWIN Book Club which is funded by Arts Council NI.
On Sunday 22nd October at 5.30pm we will be holding a Service of Remembrance
in memory of those who have lost their lives to the River Foyle.
A biodegradable paper lantern will be released onto the River by our volunteers from the boat for each person who has been lost to the river, lanterns will be removed after the service. Light refreshments will be served in our Prehen base.
Everyone is welcome to attend, however for catering purposes, we ask that any participants express their interest beforehand.
RNID is resuming its free drop-in support session for NHS hearing aid users support service in Carnhill Resource Centre on Thursday 19th October from 11am-12.30pm
The sessions are run by trained volunteers and funded by the Health & Social Care Board.

18Independent Members to the Agricultural Wages Board
The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is seeking to appoint a Chair and two Independent Members to the Agricultural Wages Board (AWB). AWB is an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body sponsored by DAERA. The AWB is a statutory body responsible for setting minimum wages, and certain other employment rights, such as holiday entitlement, for agricultural workers in Northern Ireland.

19 Campaign for Volunteers to the Independent Monitoring Board
The Department of Justice is seeking to appoint volunteers to the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) for Northern Ireland. The closing date for initial applications is 27th October 2023. Whilst you can apply at any time, if you apply before this date your application can be assessed shortly afterwards.
The role of an IMB member is to monitor the treatment of prisoners and the conditions of their imprisonment.
