11Mockingbird Theatre Group presents “Down By the River Saile”
“Down By the River Saile” is an original play, written by Ronan Carr, which tells the true story of an impoverished Derry woman, Florrie Kavanagh, living in London in the 1950s, who gives her baby to the Hollywood star Jane Russell; an event which caused moral outrage and a public scandal at the time. Florrie was murdered in London in 1980 and her death remains an unsolved crime. It is a fascinating story that Mockingbird Theatre has brought to life with humour and great storytelling. The play takes us from the Springstown Camps in the 1950s to the Golden Age in Hollywood, to the dancehalls in London in the 50s and to all sorts of interesting places in between.
Mockingbird Theatre Group is a site-specific theatre company, based in the North West, formed in 2018 by Ronan Carr and Anne Gallagher, with the intention of bringing original theatre to people wherever they are. Our aim is to entertain and delight.
Our Offer to You
The play is 75 minutes long and the story is told by two actors playing multiple roles, minimal set but lots of props (especially hats!). The simplicity of the staging of the piece means that it can be performed almost anywhere; all we need is a dedicated room (if you have a stage, all the better, but we can adjust the performance to suit the venue). For £400 we will come to your premises, set up and perform the play for you
12 Invitation to Ballads of Rhinestones and Newcomers
Bojana Janković, Tom O’Dea, Frank Sweeney
Wednesday 20 July–Saturday 24 September 2022
Launch: Tuesday 19 July, 7–9pm
CCA Derry~Londonderry is delighted to invite you to our summer exhibition with Bojana Janković and a collaboration between Tom O’Dea and Frank Sweeney.
Ballads of Rhinestones & Newcomers brings together two counterpointing experiences of the border between the UK and Republic of Ireland at a time when the realities of Brexit are playing out.
In the exhibition, Frank Sweeney and Tom O’Dea look at the history of analogue radio and television signals spilling across the borders of these islands, in a reflection of the complex spatial territories produced by transmitters and their environment.
Bojana Janković, an Eastern European artist based in NI, explores complex relationships between migration, displaced identities, migrant labour and discrimination through a series of socially engaged performances and an installation that centres the migrant experience of the invisible border. Bojana’s work charts the hard border experienced by migrants as it is performed and conjured up daily.
