In a climate of great uncertainty faced by voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations (VCSE) not least due to political instability, Brexit, and continued austerity, organisations, groups and volunteers continue to strive to deliver positive social change for the individuals and communities they work with.
This event is one of a number of engagements being held by Building Change Trust across Northern Ireland between February and June 2017 as part of its VCSE Futures initiative.
Throughout the initiative we are engaging with the sector itself, funders and policy makers, to hear their views.
The purpose of this 10 May event is to hear views from VCSE groups and organisations in the North West on current challenges and possible opportunities, and to attempt to answer the following questions:

2 Small Grants Available For Derry~Londonderry Community Groups
The Acorn Fund Giving Circle (AGC) is calling for applications to its small grants scheme, which provides financial support of up to £500 to local groups that work with, or support, children and young people in the Derry City area.
The Acorn Giving Circle is entirely funded by a group of local female philanthropists who are dedicated to helping improve the lives of children and young people through social, cultural, sporting or educational activities. The Giving Circle was formed in 2012 as a response to the establishment of the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland’s Acorn Fund and as a legacy of the 2013 City of Culture year.
Previous groups who have been funded include Friends of St. Brigid’s Association, North West Women’s Collective and Cruse Bereavement Care. The Foyle Hospice was recently awarded £500 for its ‘Healing Hearts’ project - providing bereavement support for a child or young person aged 4-16 years. The project used arts and crafts and photography to help create a personal ‘Memory Project’.
The Live Life Lisa Orsi Foundation also received a grant last year to help bring over 50 young people to China to compete in the 2016 Asian Gaelic Games.
The application process is open from Monday, April 3 until April 18 and applications are available online at www.communityfoundationni.org.
This is the first Giving Circle to be formed in Derry~Londonderry, however, Giving Circles are a well-established form of philanthropy. Groups of individuals donate money and time to a pooled fund and decide collectively where funding will be allocated – either to a local charity or community project.
A representative from the Acorn Giving Circle explained where the group is directing its efforts in this funding round:
‘The aim of the Giving Circle is to collectively direct our support to where the need is greatest and where we know that it will make a real and significant difference to the local community. We’ve already seen how a small grant can make a real and lasting difference in local communities, helping improve the lives of young people and giving them new opportunities. ‘We are encouraging projects and organisations who support young people to apply for the Giving Circle as soon as they can.’

3 Holywell STEW - Pitch for support!
Do you have an idea for a community project? We'd love to help!
Holywell STEW is a new project of Holywell Trust to encourage local community activity and philanthropy in Derry/Londonderry. Based on the Detroit Soup model, we are looking for 12 community initiatives to pitch for support at 3 community dinners over the coming months.
Organisations will have the opportunity to pitch for small financial support (approximately £500) for a project to support local people. Every organisation that takes part in the programme will receive support and training on preparing and delivering their pitch.
This project is about local people helping each other - by paying to attend the dinner you get the chance to vote for the project you want to see supported. The available funds are the resources we collect at the door.
At each community dinner we will hear from 4 groups who will have four minutes to pitch their idea. Following the pitches the audience will vote for the project to receive the financial support.
We are really looking forward to supporting a range of community initiatives and would love to hear from you about your idea.
The deadline for the receipt of completed applications for this round of Holywell STEW events is Friday 5th May 2017.
Groups that promote religious belief, political opinion or are sports club related will not be accepted. We'd love to hear from you if you have an idea for a community development, community relations, social justice, arts, social enterprise or community education project.

4 Applications being accepted for the Certificate in Community Youth Studies 2017/2018
This course is run by the Ulster University in partnership with Youth Action Northern Ireland and YMCA Ireland (Start September 2017, Magee Campus)
It is a 1-year part-time course , run 1 day per week in Ulster University, Magee Campus, from September until May. You are expected to be working or volunteering for about 16 hours per week in a youth work setting.
The modules we cover are:
Perspectives on young people, Engaging with groups, Reflective Practice, Applied physical theatre, Diversity and young people, and a work-based learning module called working with young people. You are assessed via group projects, presentations, essays and through your practice.
Minimum entrance qualifications are generally level 2 or 3 youth work qualifications and GCSE English/ relevant A’levels. The more youth work training you have the better, as we build on this in the Certificate. Generally, people who have level 2 qualification tend to find the course more challenging than people who have level 3 qualifications, but investing time in reading and applying what you’re learning in class to your practice, will help you to complete the course.
In terms of experience, it is beneficial to have some experience of leading and facilitating groups, rather than just being a participant or supervising young people in a club.
The cost of the course is approx £960 which some students fund through support from their organisation and others through an application to Student Finance, which the course is eligible for.

5 Impact Of Psychological Trauma QUB accredited course & ‘Trauma Education’ Information Night
WAVE Trauma Centre are offering a few free places on our Psychological Trauma Course running in WAVE Trauma Centre 25-30 The Diamond, Derry/Londonderry, BT48 6HP.

Impact of Psychological Trauma
“Trauma is cumulative and sequential. It is a process of which we can sometimes determine when it starts, but nearly never when it stops.”
Who is the course targeting?
Impact of Psychological Trauma targets anyone who wishes to gain a greater understanding of the cause and effects of psychological trauma.
What is involved?
This course runs for 4 days, 1 day per week from 10am to 4pm. Each course will have no more than 14 participants.
Requirements for course accreditation
Participants will be required to complete a 2,500 word assignment for course accreditation. Successful participates receive 10 CATS at Level 1 through Queen’s Open Learning programme.
Course Objectives
• Understand psychological trauma and the development of psychological trauma theories
• Understand the effects of trauma on adults
• Explore the impact of trauma on early childhood and adolescence
• Discuss strategies to support young people after trauma
• Examine the appropriate treatment pathways for traumatised individuals

6 Expansion of Community Development Approaches - Delivering Together and HSC Transformation

A Community Development Work Stream has been established as part of the Health Minister’s Vision Health 2026 set out in ‘Delivering Together’. The team has worked together over the past number of months to examine how best community development can contribute to the overall HSC Transformation process. A draft Community Development Framework is being shaped and the Symposium is an opportunity to contribute to this developing Framework. A wider engagement process with the community and voluntary sector as well as health and social care professionals is also planned for the coming months at a more local level. Your experience in this field is highly valued by the Community Development Work Stream and I would ask that you prioritise your attendance at this event if at all possible.

No previous experience is needed, as full training and support is provided by staff here at the base. Volunteers will gain worthwhile communication skills and experience of working in a team environment whilst also making a huge difference to those who contact us.

Regional fundraising is at the very centre of how we raise vital funds at a local level. The money we raise funds the delivery of universal services as well as the services we provide locally such as dementia cafes. It also helps to fund research into care for today, a cure for tomorrow, as well as for our campaigning work.
We have opportunities for volunteers to be involved as part of an existing group, or to provide individual support for organised events in the Foyle area.
Join a regional Fundraising Group
Working with the local Community Fundraiser, you will attend meetings with other core members, research, contribute ideas, promote and attend events.. This could be a couple of hours per months for planning meetings plus attending events.
Become an Events Fundraiser
The role will be based at fundraising events - the times, dates and locations of which will vary. Example of fundraising events include: collections, Memory Walks, community events, corporate events and special events. Example tasks could include route marshal, manning the information stall, bucket collection, setting up and packing down at events, or assisting at corporate events.

Community Places continues its free planning advice sessions for people and community groups in the Holywell DiverseCity Community Partnership, Bishop Street, Derry~Londonderry on the first Wednesday of each month.
The next one is on Wednesday, 3 May 2017 and the drop in session runs from 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm.
Our staff can provide independent advice on all kinds of planning issues in towns, rural areas and villages. We can also provide advice on how to object to a planning application, how Derry City and Strabane District Council’s planning department deals with development that is built without planning permission and information on the planning system.
There is no need to make an appointment. If you are not able to drop into the advice session, we can provide planning advice by telephone (9023 9444) or you can also contact us by email (info@communityplaces.info).
Community Places is an independent charity which provides free planning advice to people and communities who cannot afford private consultants.

13 Come Celebrate refugee welcome in Derry-Londonderry!!!
North West Migrants Forum is delighted to announce that on Sunday 30 April 2017, North-West Migrants Forum will be hosting a celebratory event to mark the wonderful spirit and generosity of Derry-Londonderry and its people.
The event will be held at Foyle Arena will run from 4pm until 8pm.
Tickets will cost £3 per person or £5 for a family.
Every day we see and hear of global events that describe such horror and hardship that it can sometimes bring tears to our eyes and a feeling of helplessness. In response to some of these unfortunate events, Derry-Londonderry has been a refuge for many people fleeing war and persecution, and we believe it is time to celebrate this fact.
It was in May 2016 that 11 Syrian refugee families arrived in Derry hoping to make it their new home, joining other refugees and migrants in the city from places as diverse as Pakistan, Egypt, the Congo, China, Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, Ethiopia and many more. Throughout 2016, 96 Syrian families arrived in Northern Ireland, with the province being heralded as leading the way on refugee resettlement in the UK.
We think this is the perfect opportunity to highlight just what this has meant to those who have made the city their home. This is all the more pertinent following recent news of more bombing and chemical attacks in Syria and the South Sudan famine.
The event will be held at the Foyle Arena on Sunday April 30, 2017 and it will be the culmination of a series of workshops bringing people together. There will be presentations of the success stories of those who have come and settled here in Derry and other parts of Northern Ireland, music and dance, which will focus on Irish, Syrian and African traditions as well as special traditional delicacies to enjoy!

The Muslim community in the city is going to mark the arrival of the month of fasting (Ramadan), with an open day at the North West Islamic Centre (8 Hyde Business Park, Pennyburn Industrial Estate, BT48 0LU), on Sunday 14th May 2017 between 1-5pm.
In the spirit of friendship and conversation, we hope to give members of the local community an engaging insight into the life of the Muslim community and to promote greater understanding of Islam. We anticipate welcoming local people from all walks of life to visit the centre and meet with its diverse Muslim members.
The open attitude of the Islamic centre and its people hope to make a major contribution in fostering interfaith and intercultural understanding within the city.
During the course of the afternoon visitors will be given the opportunity to talk with members of the Muslim community, observe their religious practices (including live mid-day prayer at 2:30pm) and receive some information through an exhibition about Islam. In addition to this, we will have a Hijab and Henna desk, kids’ corner, some local and ethnic snacks with tea, and more.
We would be honoured to have your presence on the day at our Islamic centre.

20 Second Line Jazz Parade on Saturday!
Second Line NI is running our fifth annual jazz parade this year during the jazz festival! Our parade is open to all ages of musicians. We are currently preparing for the fun day out and would like to give you the upcoming master class date and parade date with route:
This two hour workshop with the JayDee Brassband will take place the day before the parade! Second Line NI and The JayDee Brassband have been working together for five years to keep the fun in this street performance going and we are looking forward to welcoming anyone who would like to join! 21 Maternal Mental Health Event
More than 1 in 10 women develop a mental illness during pregnancy or within the first year after having a baby. In the UK, mental illness in pregnant and postnatal women often goes unrecognised, undiagnosed and untreated.
As part of Maternal Mental Health Week, FWIN along with the Women's Centre Derry and WRDA in Belfast are holding an event to provide information and to recognise the importance of this issue.
There will be guest speakers on the day from both INSPIRE and AWARE.

The social economic, political cultural history of the world has a soundscape: a rich heritage of song and music that resonate in harmony with the deeper rhythms of each age.
Liam Campbell’s City of Derry Jazz Festival presentation will trace the history of the power of song: songs in support of civil and human rights, songs of healing, songs that sing of the soul, songs of renewal, songs of protest - from folk to Jazz and much in-between.
Liam will seek to explore and foreground the clear parallels between songs of conscience and the social, cultural, and political realities of their age. He will offer a whistle stop tour of key musical genres from the birth of Jazz in New Orleans and its connection to the slave trade, to the rise of Punk from a disaffected generation in the later part of the 20th Century.

Liam Campbell and Eamonn Baker are working together to facilitate two free creative writing sessions during this year’s City of Derry Jazz Festival. The two sessions will encourage writers to explore the power of word and song across musical genres and will draw on milestone blues, jazz, and rock songs such as Billie Holliday’s "Strange Fruit" and Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come".
These sessions will take place at 11am til 1pm on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th at Holywell DiverseCity Community Partnership Bishop Street (opposite Hendersons). To book please ring 0287126141.

Eamonn is editor of “To Tell You The Truth” and “Remembering: Our Shared Legacy From The First World War” and has published poetry with Guildhall Press (Moments and Writes of Spring) and with Fingerpost.
Liam is a published author creatively and academically with publishers including Wiley-Blackwell & Walking Tree, and is an award winning playwright. Liam’s 2008 play The Harbinger won the Greer Garson Award for New Fiction (2010) and was shortlisted for the best new play by an Irish writer by the ‘Irish Playwrights and Screenwriters Guild’ in 2009.
Eamonn and Liam both have designed and delivered creative writing programmes for organisations as diverse as Holywell Trust, Guildhall Press, Derry Playhouse, Ulster University and the North West Regional College.

Burntollet Sons of Ulster & Sid Peacock - Saturday 29th April at 3.30pm @ Holywell DiverseCity Community Partnership and Sunday 30th April at 5.00pm in the Craft Village
The UK City of Culture year of 2013 signalled an unprecedented change in the perception of cultural expression and the engagement between local marching bands from the Londonderry Bands Forum and the All Ireland Fleadh was a clear indicator of this change in mindsets.
The Pride of Orange and Blue, Burntollet Sons of Ulster and Caw flute bands led a celebration of the fife, flute and drum in Ebrington Square on the gig rigs and the Churchill Flute Band, Irelands oldest marching band, performed in Victoria Market on the city side. Bands subsequently went on to take part in the Sligo Fleadh the following two years.
Jonathan Burgess’ intimate portrayal of Protestant band culture in his play ‘The Pride,’ received a standing ovation in Culturlann Uí Chanáin, in Great James Street.
Interviewed at the time, Kenny McFarland, chairman of the Londonderry Bands Forum said: “We worked with the organisers of the Fleadh behind the scenes for quite a while. and seized the opportunity to take part in the fleadh and do what we do best, which is play music.” He added: “This involvement allowed us to showcase our culture to a wider audience that wouldn’t necessarily see it depicted in this light.”
Next week’s City of Derry Jazz Festival sees another involvement for the members of the Burntollet Sons of Ulster who will play debut gigs- at 3.30 pm on the Saturday 29th at Holywell DiverseCity Community Partnership and at 5pm in the Craft Village the following day, Sunday 30th. During both gigs the band will be accompanied by a quartet of jazz musicians led up by Birmingham based Bangor born Sid Peacock who has previously worked with the band in 2013 and more recently with members of the Londonderry Bands Forum during a joint music bursary scheme with An Culturlann.
Speaking about the performances Burntollet Band master Ryan Simpson said “Working with Sid and other musicians in 2013 was certainly one of the strangest but exciting projects the band had possibly taken part in. Who would ever have thought that a marching blood and thunder flute band could hook up with a jazz band and actually work. When Eamonn Baker contacted the band about possibly taking part in something similar for the Jazz Festival and working with Sid again we snapped at the chance. Another chance to showcase our music to a whole different audience again."
Derek Moore, coordinator of the LBF added “Our aim in the forum is to encourage local young, and not so young bandsmen, to show that musicians, regardless of the bands, groups or settings that they play in, are simply there to perform and entertain”
