 7 FREE Defibrillators for Sport

Sports clubs and organisations in eight local council areas are being invited to apply for free automated external defibrillator (AED) devices as as Sport Northern Ireland re-opens the Defibrillators for Sport initiative.

The project allocated a specific number of devices across each of Northern Ireland’s local council areas using an allocation methodology designed to ensure that devices are located in areas deemed to be of greatest need. The allocation model ensures a fair allocation of devices, taking ‘proximity to services’ and ‘population by District Council area’ into account.

The project has now exhausted applicants in eight of the eleven local council areas, and is inviting sports clubs and organisations located in the council areas below to apply for one of the remaining 195 devices to be distributed:

  • Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council
  • Ards and North Down Borough Council
  • Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council
  • Derry City and Strabane District Council
  • Fermanagh and Omagh District Council
  • Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council
  • Mid and East Antrim Borough Council
  • Mid Ulster District Council

The remaining three local council areas (Belfast City, Armagh, Banbridge & Craigavon, and Newry, Mourne & Down) are oversubscribed due to high numbers of applications and distribution of defibrillators and are therefore not included in Phase 3 of the Defibrillators for Sport initiative.

Who Can Apply?

Sports clubs and organisations in the eight local council area listed above are welcome to apply. Even if the club / organisation already possesses a defibrillator, you may be eligible to receive a new AED device through this initiative.

The Community Resuscitation Strategy has identified the need to increase provision of AEDs in community settings and this survey will gauge the requirement from a sporting perspective. If your club / organisation already has an AED, devices obtained prior to 2007 should be considered obsolete and measures should be taken to replace such equipment. Accordingly, clubs with older devices will be eligible to apply for a new AED.

To make an application, please click here

Please note the closing date for applications is Monday 4th September 2017 at 12noon.

Free Defibrillator Awareness Training will also be offered to all successful clubs / organisations.

8 Social Innovation NI’s Knowledge Exchange Programme (Improving employability for young people aged 16-18)

Social Innovation NI’s Knowledge Exchange Programme aims to bring together stakeholders who are currently supporting 16-18 year olds into education, employment and training and seeks to uncover possible new socially innovative solutions to address unemployment challenges currently facing young people.

The overall programme which Enterprise North West and Work West are delivering has 5 key phases which will include the provision of a structure for committed providers to share their insights and identify new and innovative ideas to tackle the significant issue of unemployed 16-18 year olds in Northern Ireland, outlined below:

  1. Mapping and identification of ‘can do’ stakeholders supporting 16-18 year olds to find employment across Northern Ireland.
  2. Engage with 5 models of local and international Best Practice where social innovators have delivered fantastic outcomes for improving employability for 16-18 year olds.
  3. Design thinking is a process which is used to help solve problems. It is an iterative process and really encourages teams to dive deep into problem and avoid the pitfall of believing that the first idea is the right solution.
  4. Report on findings
  5. Symposium to share learning

It is essential that each individual signing up for the programme confirms their attendance at ALL workshops.  Places are limited based on high levels of demand and our requirement to ensure a broad geographic and organisational spread.

Key Commitments for participants:

  • Actively participate and learn a design thinking process
  • Commit to participate in a team representing different organisations and contribute your insights, successes and challenges. Share access to end users, networks, information, and knowledge to benefit all. Build trust in the group and encourage people to speak openly about what is working and what is not actually working in NI with a view to collaboratively coming up with innovative solution.
  • Commit to work together, to innovate and to experiment to address the shared problem. There will be an opportunity to connect with the young people who are at the core of this issue who may be invited to join teams
  • Commit to ideate together and build “change the world” prototypes for new initiatives/products to deal with these long standing issues and change lives

The proposed timetable for the delivery of the Design Thinking workshops are outlined below, each session is a half day workshop and final session is full day:

19 Rural Digital Potential Research

Digital connectivity, mobile working, Skype meetings, e-commerce and so on are becoming ever more important for business efficiency, productivity and competitiveness.  There has been a lot of attention paid to the roll out of broadband networks in rural areas, but what has largely been overlooked is how rural businesses use digital.

We're asking organisations across the UK with a rural interest to help promote the survey, so it reaches as many rural based business owners and managers as possible.  We'd like to hear from businesses in all sectors (from farms, to retail, to tech companies), of all sizes (from sole traders to large enterprises), of all types (from PLCs to social enterprises)  and of all ages (from start-ups to long-established firms).  However much they do (or don't) currently make use of digital connectivity and technologies.

Your help and response would be greatly appreciated

https://ruralengland.org/unlocking-the-digital-potential-of-rural-areas-research/

Survey responses will be accepted up until Friday 1st September.  You can assure businesses that their responses will be considered confidential by the research team and they don't have to complete questions which would identify them.

Rural England CIC is undertaking this research in collaboration with Scotland's Rural College and with funding received from Amazon UK.  Professor Sally Shortall, until recently of Queen's University Belfast, is an adviser to the research.
