1 Greggs Foundation’s Local Community Projects Fund 2018 Opens for Round 2
The Greggs Foundation's Local Community Projects Fund provides grants of up to £2,000 to not-for-profit organisations in Great Britain for projects or for equipment for people in need at the heart of local communities.
-
Projects can support a variety of people:
-
Disabled or suffering chronic illness
-
Living in poverty
-
Voluntary carers
-
Homeless
-
Isolated older people
-
Other demonstrable significant need.
Eligible projects should also be able to demonstrate that they have achieved at least one of the following Key Performance Targets for their beneficiaries:

Decreased social isolation
-
Improved health and wellbeing
-
Improved resilience/coping mechanisms
-
Improved life skills
-
Improved opportunities
Any not for profit organisation can apply, however, larger organisations with a turnover in excess of £300,000 are unlikely to be successful.
The Local Community Projects Fund is administered by seven charity committees through- out Great Britain.
Please note that the programme is over-subscribed and there is huge competition for the grants available. In 2017 only 27% of eligible applications were awarded

Beyond Tokenism Health Conference

The Conference will feature the launch of the BME Health Needs Research, the Traveller Needs and Issues research as well as talks about the challenges the BME, LGBT, disability, ex-prisoners and victim communities face when accessing healthcare and much more.
Beyond Tokenism Initiative is a strategic intervention with a strong Black and Minority Ethnic focus along with LGBT, ex-prisoners, victims and disability representation from wider society. The main work focuses on working alongside the Foyle Race Equality Forum (FREF) on delivery of the strategic priorities of the Beyond Tokenism Strategic Report. The initiative is being delivered by a partnership between Lettershandoney & District Development Group and FREF.
The PEACE IV Programme is an EU funded programme designed to support peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the border region. It is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).
The specific objective for the programme is:
‘The promotion of positive relations characterised by respect and where cultural diversity is celebrated and people can live, learn and socialise together, free from prejudice, hate and intolerance.’

6 Health and Wellbeing through Horticulture
Derry City and Strabane District Council have partnered with The Conservation Volunteers to deliver a health and wellbeing programme for 14 residents of the Derry City and Strabane District Council area. This will see men and women of all ages and backgrounds enjoy learning the basics of gardening/growing your own vegetables whilst gaining a level 2 qualification in Horticulture over the summer months.
Are you thinking about a career in horticulture, looking to meet new people, gain confidence, or just focus on yourself for a change? If you are not working, aged over 18, live within the Derry City & Strabane District council area and are interested in horticulture this could be ideal for you.
The Horticulture course will run 2 days a week for 13 weeks commencing mid-June. Working as part of a team you should gain skills and knowledge, make new friends, enjoy the outdoors and build the confidence to help you improve your health and wellbeing. Maybe you will even start to think as Horticulture as a career. You will be supplied with a daily lunch and the necessary protective equipment and all training will be paid for by Derry City & Strabane District Council.
Accreditation
On successful completion of the course participants will have the following qualifications and training:

2 days per week volunteering at Brooke Park to carry out practical horticulture work

Level 2 Certificate in Work Based Horticulture. There will also be opportunities to travel to other sites.

First Aid training

Construction Skills Register (CSR card)

7 Celebrating Commonality ~ Celebrating Difference
Call for Participants
This Peace IV funded programme developed by the Churches Trust, will bring people together to explore the Abrahamic Faiths primarily in the context of the commonalities and differences between Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
The programme is open to people of all faiths and none, from across the community in the Derry and Strabane District Council area, and from Donegal.
The programme will consist of 7 workshops and 3 study visits beginning in June 2018 and completing in March 2019.

Victor Montgomery’s brother, David, a part-time member of the UDR, was shot dead by members of Provisional IRA at his place of work on February 10th 1981.
Victor will share his story as part of Towards Understanding and Healing's ongoing series of Valued Voices Testimony events.

My name is Neo Martin Maboee. I am from Johannesburg in the Republic of South Africa and I am a Global Mission Fellow with the General Board of Global Ministries.
The global mission fellow program gives young adult mission service opportunity to serve in social justice ministries across the globe. I am here in Northern Ireland to work with the North West Methodist Mission homeless services, as the Educational and Awareness Officer. 10 Housing Benefit transitional payment for Universal Credit claimants - TOMORROW
Back in November 2017, Chancellor for the Exchequer, Phillip Hammond, announced a £1.5 billion package to address some of the concerns which have been raised in relation to Universal Credit.
One of the main measures introduced was the concept of a “Housing Benefit transitional payment for Universal Credit claimants”.
The regulations which introduce this Housing Benefit “run-on” were laid before Parliament on 17 April 2018 and will not come into operation until 8 May 2018.
However, in Northern Ireland, extra statutory approval was given to allow the payment of Housing Benefit to continue for two weeks after a claim for Universal Credit has been made from the 11 April 2018.
This change means claimants who have been receiving Housing Benefit immediately prior to claiming Universal Credit would receive a transitional payment of two weeks housing benefit “run-on” when they claim Universal Credit, without it affecting Universal Credit entitlement.
The claimant will receive both the housing benefit and the Universal Credit housing element for those 2 weeks.
It has been confirmed that where housing benefit is paid directly to the landlord, the double payment will be offset against rent arrears and any surplus would be returned to the claimant.
It is hoped that these measures will reduce the potential for rent arrears to accrue as claimants transition onto Universal Credit.

11 Universal Credit & Housing Masterclass

This session aims to offer a forum for attendees to ask questions relating to UC and housing, to our specialist panel. Universal Credit (UC) is being introduced on a phased geographical basis across Northern Ireland between September 2017 to December 2018.
When introduced in an area, claimants will no longer be able to make a new claim to the benefits being replaced, and will need to claim UC. People experiencing a change of circumstances during this “roll out” period will also need to apply for UC. The managed migration of all claimants is scheduled for July 2019 – July 2022.
UC affects tenants and landlords across all tenures, it also impacts owner occupiers.
This session provides a fantastic opportunity to have any housing related UC questions answered by an expert team. It will also offer a platform to engage with other housing professionals and enhance your understanding of the emerging issues and impacts.
By the end of the session you will have a specialist understanding of the impacts of UC.

La Dolce Vita Project is a local community based organisation set up to address the issues surrounding domestic abuse and violence, by all individuals throughout Northern Ireland.
As an organisation our aim is to bring awareness, educate, empower and encourage communities in understanding the impact of domestic abuse and violence, not just on the individuals but also on the family, friends, communities.
We are inviting individuals to express an interest in joining our Board of Directors. These positions are voluntary although out of pocket expenses regarding travel to meetings will be reimbursed.
We would ask those who have a passion or background knowledge, education in the area of domestic abuse and violence to consider expressing an interest.
This is not a mandatory requirement and we would also welcome those with a background in Community Development, Law, Accountancy, working with Children and Young people affected by domestic abuse, public sector business skills, Human Rights, who can demonstrate core responsibilities within these roles.
All members must be over 18 years of age, will be subject to an Access NI check and will be required to attend 6 meetings per year.

This Volunteer role is essential to creating dementia friendly communities across Northern Ireland. You will do this through providing interactive dementia awareness workshops to develop knowledge about dementia and provide opportunities to develop confidence and skills on how to communicate, relate and support someone with dementia.

Rainbow Child and Family Centre has received PEACE IV funding support through Derry City and Strabane District Council for a Cross Community Community Project and is seeking to appoint 3 facilitators for the Programme. The programme will run for 9 months working with 30+ young people aged between 10 years and 18 years.
Costing:
£12 per hour for total of 120 hours plus £40 overnight allowance for two nights of residential.
The project will consist of the following:
Working 2 evening/day one week (for workshops) and 1 evening/day the alternative week(for trips) Engaging with 30+ young people from Catholic/National and Protestant/Loyalist communities plus a two night residential. Includes liaising with Programme Coordinator for planning, preparation of workshops and evaluation

Derry City and Strabane District will join cities and towns across Ireland to celebrate Culture Night on Friday 21st September 2018.
Culture Night presents a great opportunity to showcase our cultural offering and develop new relationships between cultural providers and audiences locally.
The event is chiefly programmed by our arts and cultural sector with council facilitating delivery and providing marketing support.
Council also offers some support to the delivery of “linking animation” and on street activity designed to create atmosphere and encourage audiences to move around events.
The number of events and audiences to Culture Night in Derry & Strabane grew significantly in 2017 and we have had lots of positive feedback as to how we can collectively grow and plan the event better together.
We very much hope you can make it along to the planning session, if you have not been involved with Culture Night before, it will be an opportunity to hear more and have a chat with other programmers.
