2 Funding scheme launched to conserve our Heritage

A funding scheme to help conserve our historic built heritage has been opened to applications.

The Repair Stream of the Historic Environment Fund, managed by the Department for Communities (DfC), is focused on supporting scheduled monuments and priority categories of listed buildings such as those that are on the buildings at risk register, thatched buildings, and those with owners on certain qualifying benefits. All work has to be completed within the current financial year.

Launching the fund,  Director of Historic Environment Iain Greenway said: “Our historic monuments and buildings are a key resource which, in addition to their heritage interest, are: an important part of our surroundings; contribute to community pride; and help strengthen our economy, right across Northern Ireland, through tourism.

“Last weekend thousands of people visited historic heritage attractions across Northern Ireland as part of European Heritage Open Days, which demonstrated the great debt we, as a society, have to those who look after and maintain these structures.  It is therefore important that we provide support, particularly to those structures and owners most in need.

“I would encourage owners and organisations to apply for funding before the closing date of 10 October.”

Further information on how to apply to the Fund is available at: https://www.communities-ni.gov.uk/articles/historic-environment-financial-support

3   Creative Europe: European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 call

The Creative Europe Desk has just issued a special call for transnational Cooperation projects that reflect the purpose of the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage:  i.e. :

  • to encourage the sharing and appreciation of Europe’s cultural heritage as a shared resource, to raise awareness of common history and values and to reinforce a sense of belonging to a common Europe
  • to promote cultural heritage as a source of inspiration for artistic contemporary creation and innovation and strengthen the interaction between the cultural and heritage sector and other cultural and creative sectors.

Projects are encouraged to consider within their timeline highly visible activities in their first year to mark the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage

  • You would apply as a partnership of a minimum of 3 partner organisations from 3 different eligible countries;
  • You can apply for a grant of up to €200,000

This overview is intended for guidance only. The guidelines for the deadline can be found on the website of the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA), which administers Creative Europe.

Please note that the usual call for small and large Cooperation Projects that are not related to the Year of Cultural Heritage has a separate deadline of 18 January 2018. Applicants can only apply under one strand.

4 Unite to Stop the Cuts

The proposed £70 million in cuts to the health service could have a potentially life theatening impact. The impact of the Western Trust's £12.5 cuts is already forewarned with the closure of a residential home, fewer surgeries, longer waiting lists, a reduction of domicillary care, the lay-off of workers and the suspension of other critical services.

As a society, we all depend on our health service. All of us know the impact of relentless cuts over the last two decades. For those who are driving forward austerity it is a political choice designed to destroy public services in order to open more aspects of health care for privatisation. Privatisation allows a few to become rich but doesn't benefit the vast majority. Stopping the proposed £70 million in cuts must be part of reversing the privatisation health care and renewing the fight to properly fund all of our public services.

To do this, we need everyone opposed to austerity to speak with a united voice against the planned cuts. We urge you to join with us, trade unions, health workers and campaigners to support the protest planned at the Western Trust public consultation meeting on Tuesday September 26 at 6pm at The Verbal Arts Centre. The larger the numbers and the broader the representation of political parties, trade unions, community organisations, campaigning networks, cultural groups, sports clubs and student groups who mobilise for protests now can give confidence to workers, patients and all of us to speak up now and organise to defend our health service and all our public services.

Please contact us at StoptheCutsEndAusterity@gmail.com to let us know if you organisation will support the protest on Tuesday September 26 and join to end austerity.

11  In Your Space Circus launches the Circus for Everyone Programme

The Circus For Everyone project is an opportunity for children and young people aged between nine and fifteen to take part in circus workshops aimed at promoting good relations.

At In Your Space Circus, ‘acceptance’ is a core value. We want people to accept both themselves and others. Everyone is of equal worth, with diversity and shared experiences having equal value. Our aim is to allow children and young people to explore diversity, challenge stereotypes and improve communication skills in a supportive way. Our project will provide a safe and respectful environment in which to do this. Activities will be carried out by highly skilled facilitators and carried out in a fun and relaxed way. Grounded in Circus skills, such as tightwire, diablo, juggling, unicycle, clowning,  we also hope to incorporate and explore the individual cultural traditions of our participants.

This project is open to schools, community groups and cultural organisations within the greater Derry-Londonderry Area. We can come out to you or, if you would like a change of scenery, you can come to visit us.

For more information, or if you are interested in taking part, please contact
Cara@inyourspaceni.org.  Phone: 02871377113.
