3 Uniting Opportunities programme opened
Uniting Opportunities, a small grants programme administered by the Department for Communities (DfC) as part of the Together: Building a United Community Strategy, is now open for applications.
Uniting Opportunities supports the wider Uniting Communities Programme by delivering projects which will promote good relations and reconciliation through sport, physical and creative activity by addressing the barriers to community participation that some young people face.
The Department recognises that the life experiences of young people varies widely and there are those who face multiple barriers when it comes to engaging with their local community. To help support those most in need, the Uniting Opportunities programme will target young people, aged between 11 and 24 years, who identify with the following groups:

Young and Homeless

Young People with poor mental health and/or addictions
-
Young refugees and asylum seekers
-
Young offenders (and young people most at risk of offending)
-
Young people in care
-
Young people with a disability
Stage one of the process is now open for applications. The information provided will enable DfC to assess applicants’ suitability to deliver projects to the target groups above and compile a list of project delivery partners that will be held for a period of up to 24 months. DfC will then issue a call for project proposals, subject to identified need. It is envisaged that the first of these this will take place during October 2017.

For community projects, an ordinary thing can mean everything, but funding can be a problem. The Aviva Community Fund is back, offering support and funding to causes that make a real difference where you live.
All you have to do is tell us what you would do with the money and just how much of a difference it could make to the community. If you took part last year, you can submit the same project or a new one. Only the top-voted projects in each category will make it through to the Finals, so make sure you tell everyone about your project and its importance to the community.

These free sessions are designed for directors, coordinators, trustees and practitioners of independent voluntary & community organisations and charities.
Your impact is the reason you exist as a charity. Under the Charity Commission NI’s public benefit requirement, all charities are required to make a public benefit statement and report annually against this.
Impact Practice can help you join the dots between this and other reporting requirements.
These workshops will look at how good impact practice helps you make sure your own goals remain at the centre of monitoring & reporting to stakeholders, funders & the Charity Commission NI.
They will be approx 2hrs, practical and interactive.

6 Autumn Social Innovation Workshops
Do you want to learn more about social innovation? What it is and how you can use it to improve what you do and how you do it?
Simply put, social innovation is finding new and innovative solutions to existing social problems. These solutions can take the form of new products, services, models, markets or processes. Crucially, social innovation seeks not only to resolve the immediate social problem but also enhances society’s capacity to act in future.
The term ‘Social Innovation’ can be alienating to many people and with these workshops NICVA will hope to demystify the concept showing participants how social innovation is really something anyone can try. You will hear from participants on the first year of the programme, many of whom accessed seed funding to bring their idea and concept to the next stage.
There will also be an opportunity to try out one of the key methods involved in social innovation – Design Thinking – so groups and organisations can see for themselves whether it can help them find new solutions to whatever societal challenges they are passionate about. ‘Design thinking’ is a creative approach to problem solving that starts with the people you’re designing for and ends with new solutions that are tailor made to suit their needs.

7 Liberation from Patriarchy for Gender Justice
The PEACE IV Programme is a unique cross-border initiative of the European Union which has been designed to support peace and reconciliation in the border Region of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Peace IV Programme will build upon the experience of previous programmes by tackling the remaining challenges that exist in building positive relationships and developing shared spaces. The programme places a strong emphasis on promoting cross-community relations and understanding to create a more cohesive society.
What is the Programme about?
-
Patriarchy is a violent social and political system of male domination, which holds that there are only two genders, that men are superior to women, that heterosexuality is the ‘normal’ sexual identity, and that a male God sanctifies this world order.
-
This training programme on Liberation from Patriarchy for Gender Justice will critique patriarchy, explore its violent consequences and practices, and suggest a more liberating alternative for all humans beyond patriarchy.
-
The intention is to expose the exclusive thinking and actions, systems and structures, that patriarchy pervades in Northern Ireland and that prevent the celebration and flourishing of real diversity, and the healing of divisive attitudes and practices, which reinforce prejudice, hate and intolerance.
What will the Training Programme cover?
The following themes will be explored over ten sessions:

The Nature and Historical Development of Patriarchy – What is patriarchy and where did it come from?

The History of Women’s Struggle for Equality in Ireland – What progress have women made in gender equality in Ireland in the last hundred years?

Patriarchy, Sectarianism and Racism: ‘The Unholy Trinity’- What do these three forms of domination have in common and what of those women who suffer triple oppression?
-
The Sex / Gender Myth: Reclaiming the Human- An exploration of multiple sex and gender identities that redefine what it is to be human.

Religion, Patriarchy and Violence – Is Christianity redemptive for women and can the churches be liberated from patriarchy?
-
Policing Women’s Sexuality for the sake of Patriarchy’s Future - How and why has women’s sexuality been controlled in Ireland over the last hundred years. Is our legislation patriarchal?

Patriarchy, Militarism and Para-militarism: The Irish Context – What is the connection between state or paramilitary violence and violence toward women? Can lessons be learnt from our own violent context?

The Economics of Patriarchy: Capitalism and the Commodification of Women – Exploring how, within a capitalist economic system, women are objectified as commodities. It will ask the question what would a just economic system look like; and what impact would that system have on the lives and dignity of women?

Women’s Rights are Human Rights – What are women’s human rights and how are they protected in international law? What progress has been made in eliminating discrimination against women?

Gender based Justice: Strategizing for Peace – Women in Europe have been strategising for peace on the world stage since 1915. What process have women used to influence peace negotiations and move society toward gender justice?
Who is the Programme for?
It is open to women from across the community in the Derry and Strabane District Council area, women from Donegal. We would also encourage men to take part. As numbers on the Training the Trainers programme are limited preference will be given to those with a direct remit for women’s issues and those working at the grass roots.

8 Free Workshop-Raising the standards of Fundraising in NI
RCN are hosting a free workshop from the Institute of Fundraising NI on the 28th September from 2pm-4pm here in our premises in Cookstown.
With the UK Fundraising Regulator now covering Northern Ireland Charities, as well as the consultation on the new Codes of Good Practice in Fundraising, many charities are taking the opportunity to review their fundraising to reflect Best Practice. This workshop will inform and educate groups on fundraising codes of best practice and self-regulation for any charity involved in fundraising. This workshop will provide guidance and support to charities to understand implications of fundraising self-regulation and grow best practice with trustees, staff and volunteers and essentially those who benefit from charity services such as supporters, donors and funders of charities.
The workshop will use the Good Practice in Fundraising Guide (Northern Ireland) to support the development of self‐regulation in line with developing policy and practice in the rest of the UK
Participants from all charities across Northern Ireland will get the chance to learn about developing their fundraising best practice and compliance with legal obligations as well as benefitting from being more aware of the legal and reputational risks to fundraising practice and understand better their responsibilities.

10 Health Transformation Consultation Event: Strabane
As part of the Health Minister’s Vision Health 2026, set out in Delivering Together, a Community Development Work Stream was set up to examine how best community development can contribute to the HSC Transformation process.
The work stream is Chaired by Mary Black, from the PHA, and its purpose is to set a clear direction and expand community development approaches to reducing health inequalities.
Work has been done on creating a Strategic Framework for Community Development and PHA are keen to get community input to the process by sharing your expertise to test these and inform the next stages of development.

This is the key focus of an online map-based survey centred on the cross-border cultural landscape of the North West. Please take the time to complete the survey at the following web-link and share it with your social network in the North West: https://app.maptionnaire.com/en/2870/
The #MyValuedPlaces survey forms part of an EU-funded research project at Maynooth University. It is open for public participation until 30th September 2017. The survey will improve our understanding of the different ways in which different people value different places in the North West. It will also inform recommendations to local and central government about how to improve public participation processes and place-making.

16 Music Bridge Community Music Training Programme

This accredited training programme is a collaboration between Musicians without Borders and Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin to train musicians, youth and community workers in community music-making, leadership and workshop facilitation skills.
The programme builds the capacity of local organisations to facilitate community work through musical interactions, making a meaningful contribution towards community development and peace-building in the region.
Training Goals & Structure
The goal of the training corresponds with the overall mission of Musicians without Borders, which is to use music to help connect communities and bridge divides: There are three core values that we aim to convey during the training:

At the completion of the training, trainee participation will be evaluated by the Musicians without Borders trainers and the local music coach. Pending positive evaluation, they will receive a certificate and be qualified to work as MwB Community Music Workshop Leaders.
OCN acreditation is also available for this course.

Dr Hugh M Quigley PhD has been training and working in the field of personal growth and development for about 27 years now. Hugh is trained as a Mindfulness teacher and facilitator with a number of schools including John Moores University. He has been practising meditation and mindfulness for over 30 years and has experienced the great benefits of both of these.
The workshop will explore Mindfulness as a way of being able to control and regulate emotional upset. The ability to apply mindfulness to various areas of life has been well researched and the benefits highlighted in major studies. This introduction workshop will give you a flavour of incorporating mindfulness into your daily life.
Introducing Mindfulness into your life allows you to take a step back and learn to respond rather than react.

19 REACH Across - Up The Foyle In A Bubble Fun Day

Cross-Community Youth Group REACH Across are organising a Family Fun Day and Water Zorbing Challenge on Sun 17th Sept at Prehen Pitches.
Teams Of 4 are needed for the Water-Zorbing Challenge, with a prize for the school, company, sports club or community group, that achieves the highest rotations. Sponsor forms are available.
Our Fun Day Area will Include a mini-farm, inflatable slides, disco dome, laser quest, soft play area, drumming sessions etc and there will also be bring & buy tables available and a competition area.
Entries are now being taken for the Water Zorbing Challenge and the cost is £60 per team. Admission to the Fun Day is £2 or £5 for a family of 3 or more. 20 Upcoming with The Playhouse
Irish and UK graffiti, parkour, DJing, Slacklining and Skateboarding artists come to St Columb’s Park
Irish and UK in graffiti, parkour, DJing, Slacklining and Skateboarding artists will visit St Columb’s Park for a free day of demos on Saturday 16 September.
Park Art aims to encourage 13-16 year olds to get in touch with their creative side with local and national artists.
The project is a result of a park focused steering group created by St Columb’s Park House, which includes police, street wardens, park manager, residents, community workers, and The Playhouse.
The free demo day will take place next Saturday 16 September from 2-7pm at St Columb's Park running track. Artists involved include UV Arts, Liverpool graffiti artist Betarok75, Painter/Illustrator and Designer Elph, parkour company JumpNI, and DJing, Music Production company Movin Music Academy.
Park Art is a Playhouse project funded by Hope For Youth, Youth Justice Agency, BBC Children in Need and the Department for Justice.

TURNER PRIZE WINNER VISITS PLAYHOUSE FOR ‘WE’RE HERE BECAUSE WE’RE HERE’ EXHIBITION
Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller will visit The Playhouse for an exhibition this month.
Presented by 14-18 NOW and the National Theatre, the exhibition runs from Thursday 7 to Wednesday 27 September and tells the story of contemporary memorial ‘We’re here because we’re here’, an event that took place on 1st July 2016, where thousands of volunteers participated in a UK-wide contemporary memorial to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.
Commissioned by 14-18 NOW, the UK's arts programme for the First World War centenary, the work was conceived and created by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller in collaboration with Rufus Norris, Director of the National Theatre.
Produced by Birmingham Repertory Theatre and the National Theatre, in collaboration with 23 UK theatres including The Playhouse.
Jeremy Deller will visit The Playhouse for the exhibition closing event on Monday 25 September from 6pm – 8pm. During this event Jeremy will discuss this artwork and he will contextualise it within his art practice. The closing event is free, and open to everyone.

Testimony event with Hazel Deeney, October 3rd 2017
Hazel Deeney was with her husband Trevor when he was shot dead on 8th April 1998 by the INLA in the driveway of their home at Kilfennan (Derry-Londonderry). Hazel was left to raise four children on her own, ranging in age from 6 to 12. Trevor was the last person killed before the Good Friday Agreement was arrived at and was buried on the day the Agreement was signed.
Hazel is a member of the Victims & Survivors Forum
She will share her story during a lunchtime Testimony event happening at Holywell DiverseCity Community Partnership from 12.30 pm till 2pm on October 3rd 2017

A variety of local and all Ireland innovative performance artists, including Sandra Corrigan Breathnach, Christoff Gillen and James King will showcase their most recent works, using imagery, voice sound and movement.
