With terms like ‘Irish backstop’, ‘Chequers’ and a ‘no deal Brexit’ dominating the media, we will cut through the jargon and explore what we actually know about Brexit and what it will mean for our rights and our peace settlement.
In December 2017, the UK and the EU agreed that our rights would be protected and enhanced in Brexit. Our workshop will provide an accessible guide to the Brexit process and its impact on human rights and equality protections here, now and in the future.

2 Garfield Weston Foundation urge NI charities to apply for grants
The head of a UK foundation with a budget of £70 million has urged charities in Northern Ireland to apply to it for grants.
“We gave away our £1billionth pound this year – and to cap it all, that came in our 60th anniversary year,”
said Philippa Charles, Director of the Garfield Weston Foundation who was talking to VIEWdigital in the Ulster Museum at the recent launch of Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure exhibition which opened in Belfast.
The number of applications coming from Northern Ireland has fallen slightly, so in this anniversary year, Philippa wants to encourage registered charities and charitable incorporated organisations here to apply for grants from Garfield Weston.
“It’s all about making a difference. We have a budget of £70 million across the UK and we are keen to encourage groups in Northern Ireland to apply”.
The Foundation supports a broad range of charities across the UK that make a positive difference. They fund a wide range of causes and charities and their grants vary according to the size of the charity and the work being undertaken. These case studies are examples of charities the Foundation has supported recently and the difference that funding has made.

4 Techies in Residence Programme
What could your organisation do with up to £25,000 support?
The Techies in Residence Programme is hosting a number of workshops aimed at the VCSE community to give people a little insight into the programme, what are the steps and what type of project would suit the programme. We’re hosting these at a range of venues across Northern Ireland, over lunch times, and the Innovate-NI team will be on hand to help answer any questions about the programme, what the supports on offer are, and also with case studies of projects that we’ve supported in the past and how Techies in Residence helped them on their journey.

What is Techies in Residence?
Digital technology holds huge potential to help the VCSE sector develop new solutions to social problems. The Techies in Residence programme, now in its fourth year, brings together the respective expertise of digital technology experts and the VCSE sector to create, develop and implement new digital social innovations in Northern Ireland.
Social Innovation simply refers to the creation and implementation of new solutions to social problems, that are more effective or efficient than existing solutions. Community Foundation NI is committed to supporting the Northern Ireland Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) Sector to expand its knowledge and practice in the field of social innovation.
Techies in Residence harnesses technical expertise from Northern Ireland’s leading technology firms to support new social innovation projects devised by local VCSE sector organisations.
The Techies in Residence programme is an initiative of Social Innovation NI, managed by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland, and is funded by Comic Relief. Innovate-NI have been appointed by the Foundation as Managing Agent for the ongoing development and delivery of Techies in Residence.
In this session, we’ll provide information for the Techies in Residence Programme and outline how your organisation can benefit and get involved.

5 Community Relations Funding
Cultural Diversity
The Community Relations Council, with the support of Government, has established a fund of approximately £400,000 to spend each year on community relations projects. This funding is intended to help community/voluntary groups throughout Northern Ireland develop their capacity to engage in community relations work and to enhance the community relations potential of projects they undertake.
There are a number of changes to the 2018/19 Scheme which include a new application form.

Core Funding Scheme is now open

The Core Scheme provides support for organisations which are considered of strategic importance in promoting community relations work across Northern Ireland. The scheme contributes towards salary and organisational running costs.
Together: Building a United Community (T:BUC)
Applicants are required to outline the outcome in Together: Building a United Community to which the proposed project will contribute. The ‘Together: Building a United Community’ Strategy, published on May 23 2013, reflects the Executive’s commitment to improving community relations and continuing the journey towards a more united and shared society.

The course

Brexit opens up the space to decide together what kind of country we want to be and what this means for our food, where it comes from and the countryside we share and enjoy.
People care about where their food comes from, how it is produced and how it affects their health and wellbeing. They believe the government should do its job, making sure that what they can buy really is safe and healthy for people, compassionate for animals, and sustainable for soils and biodiversity.
Second, they challenge the idea that ‘food poverty’ is best addressed by making food cheaper. Poverty is poverty. In rural areas, the cost of living can be up to 30 percent higher than in towns. If people can’t afford basic goods and services – food, housing, heating, transport – then the answer must be in getting a better balance between the price of goods, the provisions of services and basic incomes.
If you care about these issues then come along and be part of a conversation with the issues raised informing a major report being prepared by the RSA to be submitted to the UK government in March 2019.
