  • Data Protection reform: Introduction to GDPR

Monday 12 March 2018
11am-1pm
The Junction, DiverseCity Community Partnership, Bishop St.

Have you heard about the reform to data protection law, which takes effect in 25 May 2018? Are you wondering what this means and how it might impact upon your organisation? Innovations in digital and communications technology have revolutionised the way in which data and information is created, stored, processed and shared.

The General Data Protection Regulation will build on the current data protection framework by providing more protections for consumers, and more privacy considerations for organisations. In this awareness raising session, NICVA staff will explore the key aspects of the GDPR in the format of what’s new, and what stays the same. Discover what your organisation can do to prepare for these changes through the impartation of information and group discussion.

This session is aimed at organisations who are at the initial stages of tackling GDPR.

North West Community Network in association with the Developing Governance Group and the Charity Commission would like to invite you to a free seminar focusing on the annual reporting requirements.  The session will also look at the Charity Commission’s new guidance on fundraising and data protection.

Registration and light refreshments at 6.45pm.

Please note that places are limited.

10 Circus Skills For Older People

In Your Space Circus is a Circus and Street Theatre charity based in Derry/Londonderry. The organisation comprises an in house circus school, a performance agency and an outreach programme.

They use circus skills and workshops as a means of promoting physical and mental well-being. To date they have worked with a wide range of individuals and groups but would like to include a wider age range.

Circus is great for coordination, balance and core strength. Their idea is that this fits perfectly with active ageing and would like to use it as a tool for older people to have some fun as whilst engaging in positive physical and mental heath well being techniques. They would like to get in contact with organisations to run a consultation process.

If your group is interested, contact Cara on 71 377113 or 07875901271 or email:

13   Employers for Childcare - Childcare Vouchers

About us

  • At the heart of Employers For Childcare is a campaigning Charity set up in 1998. We identified the barrier that the lack of affordable, quality childcare presents to working parents.
  • We offer a range of support services including a Family Benefits Advice Service, a salary sacrifice Childcare Voucher scheme and workshops on topics important for both parents and employers.
  • We are a Social Enterprise. 100% of the profit we make from the Childcare Voucher scheme is invested into our charity to support working parents with dependent children.

How Childcare Vouchers work

  • Put simply, the childcare voucher scheme enables employees to exchange part of their monthly salary for childcare vouchers.
  • This is known as salary sacrifice and the maximum allowed is £243 per month.
  • The amount sacrificed is exempt from tax and National Insurance Contributions (NIC)
  • resulting in savings of up to £933 pa per employee.
  • Employers are also exempt from their NIC on the amount sacrificed by each employee which reduces their payroll bill.
  • We administer the scheme on behalf of our clients and charge a small fee for doing so, which comes out of the employers NIC savings.
  • We use the fee to fund the work of our charity.

Why choose us?

  • We are the only Social Enterprise childcare voucher provider in the UK. 100% of our profits are distributed for social good.
  • Our advice helpline is available to all employees — not just those using the childcare voucher scheme.
  • We hold the prestigious ISO 27001 accreditation for Information Security Management.
  • We operate throughout the UK.
  • We are a Founding member of the Childcare Voucher Providers Association.

17  The Woman is Present: Women’s Stories of WWII

By Mary Moynihan, Deirdre Kinahan, Fiona Bawn Thompson and Paul Kennedy
Imagined recreation of moments from the lives of women in WWII

‘Brilliant, moving, eye opening journey into stories of women’s bravery tonight. Well done to all involved’, Sarah Glennane, audience Member

Following on from a highly successful run in Germany as part of an international tour, The
Woman is Present: Women’s Stories of WWII can now be seen at the Theatre Royal, Waterford on 15 February and at the Playhouse Theatre, Derry on 24 February 2018.

The Woman is Present: Women’s Stories of WWII is a creative reimagining of moments from the lives of women during WWII recalling stories of bravery, sacrifice and love amidst the horror of war, as women stood up against Fascism and totalitarianism and refused to accept oppression. The performance is followed by a post-show discussion with the artists and invited guest speakers to explore powerful women’s stories in history and themes of gender equality and peace.

Women’s stories that have inspired the performance include Mary Elmes (1908-2002), a Cork woman who was the first Irish person honoured as ‘Righteous Among Nations’ for her work saving Jewish children from the Nazi gas chambers during World War II; Ettie Steinberg (1914-42) the only female Jewish Irish citizen known to have been murdered in Auschwitz; Marta Hillers (1911-2001) from Germany who wrote her autobiography Eine Frau in Berlin (A Woman in Berlin) under the name ‘Anonyma’ (Anonymous), detailing her experiences of the last days of WWII as she and over one million other women were raped and abused by Allied soldiers of the Red Army; Neus Català Pallejà (b.1915) from Spain, a member of the United Socialist Party of Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War, an active collaborator with the French Resistance during WWII and the only living Spanish survivor of Ravensbrück concentration camp for women; Maria Eugenia Jasińska (1906-43) from Łódź in Poland who worked for the resistance and gave up her own life rather than ‘name names’; and Dolores Ibárruri, or La Pasionaria (1895-1989), from Spain, a revolutionary leader, political activist, communist and crusader against Fascism during the Spanish Civil War who created the famous cry ‘They Shall Not Pass’.
