1 Unscheduled Care in Western Trust area - Your experience, views and suggestions

Can you spare 15 minutes of your valuable time to answer eight straightforward questions about Unscheduled Care in this part of the Western Health & Social Care Trust area?

If so please click here to begin this anonymous survey.

North West Community Network has been commissioned by the Western Local Commissioning Group (LCG) to conduct Community Engagement around the area of Unscheduled Care.

Unscheduled Care basically refers to when someone accesses health and social care services unexpectedly.  This can occur at any time and crosses the traditional boundaries between general practitioner (GP), community and hospital services and means there must be a 24 hour service available.

Across the Western Trust area, over 1000 surveys will be completed by the end of March 2017 and then analysed to determine what changes or priorities need to be considered in the shaping and commissioning of future services.

You can decide to complete the survey yourself, share it with friends and family, colleagues and service users.  The value and analysis of responses will be greatly improved if you can include answers on Age, Gender and Post Code so you are kindly asked to record these.

Your can complete this survey electronically here or, if more convenient, print and complete by hand.  It is also available on the Network's website -  www.nwcn.org

3   BBC Children in Need - Strabane and Cookstown

BBC Children in Need’s vision is that every child has a safe, happy and secure childhood and the chance to reach their potential. We seek to realise this vision by supporting, promoting and publicising work that addresses the challenges that children and young people face and work that builds their skills and resilience.

Right now BBC Children in Need is funding over 200 projects in towns and villages all over Northern Ireland with grants totalling over £8m. These are projects working with children and young people who need a bit of support in order to get the best out of life. They may be sick or living in poverty; they may have been abused or neglected or have a disability or be dealing with other challenges that the groups we fund can help them to overcome.

This year because of the generosity of everyone who donates to the charity, over £4m will be spent on projects working with disadvantaged children and young people here in Northern Ireland. We want to ensure that everyone who is involved in this work, no matter how small your project, knows about the opportunity to secure some funding to support positive outcomes for children and young people in your area.

BBC Children in Need is hosting outreach sessions in Strabane and Cookstown to encourage new applications and to explain how our grant strategy works out in practice.

For small grants of less than £10,000 we are basically open all year round with 4 decision dates and a turnaround period of 2 months. Applicant can now apply for small grants for up to three years. For main grants of more than £10,000 there are 3 closing dates in the year and it is a 2-stage process, taking 5 months to complete. All our funding is focused on the outcomes you hope to achieve through your project. We would like to explain our approach to you in more detail, both generally about the charity and our aims, and to give you a chance to talk specifically about your project to one of our staff.

Below are two dates and venues when we will be available to meet with you and to share our priorities and requirements. Please get in touch with us at the contact number below to arrange an individual consultation or just come along to the event to hear a bit more about what we do. It’d be helpful if you can let us know in advance if you will be there.

Strabane, Wednesday 5th April 2017, 11.00 – 13.00, Alley Theatre
Cookstown, Friday 7th April 2017, 11.00 – 13.00, Burnavon Arts Centre

4 Youth Ideas on Health and Wellbeing

Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC) bid to become the European Youth Capital for 2019 (EYC19).  With the unfortunate news of the title being awarded to Novi Sad, council are delighted to reassure youth, they are still committed to delivering a number of youth programmes throughout the year of 2019.

In the lead up to the EYC19 bid, youth shared their views and opinions on what was important to them and what they would like to see developed.  These views and opinions were developed into programme ideas and categorised into the following areas:

  • Health and wellbeing
  • Education and employability
  • Access and inclusion
  • Youth democracy
  • Culture programme

We are currently researching three suggested programmes to be delivered under Health and Wellbeing:

  • Creating Positive Mental Health
  • Awareness/prevention of Addiction
  • Self-Confidence through Body Imagery

(team members are also looking into the other topics)

We would be grateful if the following questionnaire could be shared with the young people you work with: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf4oEJ1MCP16uAG-IuiyQ7uofdFn_dfYinCS8jeUKbR6xAoYA/viewform

Please contact me if you can provide information on what is currently available to youth under these three areas.

This information will be collated and provided to a youth steering group, who will lead on the development of the programmes.

The Plan, issued in October 2015, sets out the Department’s commitments to address the needs of people living with a rare disease. It identifies a range of actions to be taken forward in Northern Ireland in respect of the 51 Commitments in the UK-wide Rare Diseases Strategy, which the four UK Health Departments endorsed in November 2013. In addition to the five themes of the UK Strategy, the Northern Ireland Plan also includes a sixth theme relating to opportunities to realise mutual benefits through collaborative approaches to rare diseases with the Republic of Ireland.
