Human Rights & Brexit – in partnership with Human Rights Commission and Holywell Trust
Thursday 15th November, 10.00 – 12.30pm
Our Rights and Brexit: where are we now?
With terms like ‘Irish backstop’, ‘Chequers’ and a ‘no deal Brexit’ dominating the media, we will cut through the jargon and explore what we actually know about Brexit and what it will mean for our rights and our peace settlement.
In December 2017, the UK and the EU agreed that our rights would be protected and enhanced in Brexit. Our workshop will provide an accessible guide to the Brexit process and its impact on human rights and equality protections here, now and in the future.
We also want to hear your thoughts and concerns about Brexit and rights and how we can help keep you in the loop.
Please RSVP to https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/our-rights-and-brexit-where-are-we-now-tickets-51460359320.

9 ‘Is Local Democracy Working in Northern Ireland?’
With the establishment of the 11 new super councils in 2015, significant new powers were transferred to local authorities. At the same time, legislation introduced the concept of community planning, which requires councils to work with statutory partners and communities "to develop and implement a shared vision for promoting the well-being of an area, community cohesion and improving the quality of life of its citizens".
Three years on, the Open Government Network are inviting activists from across Northern Ireland to give their views on whether community planning is working and to discuss how local democracy might be improved. This workshop will provide a forum for engaged citizens to give their views on community planning in Northern Ireland, given the original vision of new local authorities that would place "the needs of all citizens at their core".
Workshop participants will be asked to share their experiences of community planning, to explore what lessons have been learned in terms of effective engagement, and consider what actions might be taken to make local government more transparent, accountable and responsive to citizens' needs.
Venue: http://cliftonbelfast.com/

17 Shelter NI Events in the Northwest
We are thrilled to announce Shelter NI Omagh Sleep Out, so get your warmest clothes and sleeping bag and come join us on this great night.
After the success of last year’s Sleepout at QUB, this year Shelter NI will be sleeping out on Friday, 30th November 2018 at 1 Market Street, Omagh, home to our very own Project SLATE.
In SLATE we support young people aged 16-25, providing a free and confidential service for young people seeking assistance and advice, as well as supporting living accommodation and floating support services to young adults at risk of homelessness in Omagh.
Every day across Northern Ireland 50 families and individuals present as homeless.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
We are taking to the streets for the night not only in solidarity with people who are roofless, but also to render visible the more hidden forms of homelessness: those living in temporary accommodation such as a hostel or bed and breakfast; ‘sofa-surfing’; those at risk of violence if they remain in their homes; people living in poor conditions that are damaging to their health; or those living in homes unsuitable for them.
By sleeping out for the night we hope to raise vital funds to continue combating homelessness and poor housing conditions and provide housing services and advice throughout GABLE and SLATE projects which last financial year helped approximately 550 people.

23 Stay Well e-zine
It’s that time of year again when flu vaccination is under way. The Public Health Agency (PHA) is urging all eligible people whose health could be seriously affected by flu to get the free flu vaccine. GPs across Northern Ireland are offering flu vaccination to everyone over 65, pregnant women, and people under 65 with underlying health conditions.
Last year, seasonal flu activity was the highest seen since the 2009 pandemic, with 119 cases of flu in intensive care/ high dependency units (ICU/ HDU) – more than twice as many as the previous year – and a total of 22 deaths in ICU/ HDU in which a diagnosis of influenza was confirmed.
This year sees two new and more effective vaccines being introduced to improve the protection offered to those at risk: a vaccine for older people (aged 65 and over) called Fluad®, which has been specifically designed to increase immunity in this age group, and a quadrivalent vaccine for people aged under 65 who have underlying health conditions and pregnant women.

24 Portrait of Janus (divided states) - Douglas Gordon at St Columb’s Hall, Derry
In Conversation with David Holmes, 6pm Preview Friday 9 November, 7:30pm
Locus+ and Void Gallery are pleased to announce the UK premiere of the Scottish artist Douglas Gordon’s new film, Portrait of Janus (divided states) at St Columb’s Hall, Derry, November 9th as part of the UK/Korea 2017-18 official programme.
Douglas Gordon's new work uses the demarcation line of Korea’s Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), the strip of land separating North and South Korea, to trace a literal and metaphorical boundary. The film tracks the DMZ border being tattooed vertically along the spine of a young Korean man, Janus Hoon Jang. It follows the tattooist’s needle moving down and across his skin and the motifs of the political and personal jar in a private act that is both tender and violent. The delicately balanced contradictions of the emerging image and its meanings are haunted in real time by Okkyung Lee's improvised cello accompaniment; a keening, in fact.
The film will be shown at 7:30pm, November 9th, St Columb’s Hall, Orchard Street, Derry, BT48 6EB.
Janus Hoon Jang, adopted by a Danish couple, often returns to Korea to research his family history. He currently lives in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Douglas Gordon (born 1966) is a Scottish artist. He won the Turner Prize in 1996, the Premio 2000 at the 47th Venice Biennale in 1997 and the Hugo Boss Prize in 1998, among others. In 2012, Gordon became a Commandeur dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres, awarded the title by the French Cultural Minister in Berlin on behalf of the French Republic. He lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
Okkyung Lee (born 1975) is a South Korean cellist, improvisor and composer. She has collaborated with a range of musicians and artists including Laurie Anderson, Christian Marclay, Thurston Moore and John Zorn. She is based in New York, USA.
Hosted by Void Gallery, Derry, UK
Commissioned by Locus+, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
Produced by Locus+ and lost but found film limited in partnership with the Korean Cultural Center, London, UK
This project is supported by Korea-Arts Council England joint fund
