North West Community Network has been commissioned by the Western Local Commissioning Group (LCG) to conduct Community Engagement around the area of Unscheduled Care.
Unscheduled Care basically refers to when someone accesses health and social care services unexpectedly. This can occur at any time and crosses the traditional boundaries between general practitioner (GP), community and hospital services and means there must be a 24 hour service available.
Across the Western Trust area, over 1000 surveys will be completed by the end of March 2017 and then analysed to determine what changes or priorities need to be considered in the shaping and commissioning of future services.
You can decide to complete the survey yourself, share it with friends and family, colleagues and service users. The value and analysis of responses will be greatly improved if you can include answers on Age, Gender and Post Code so you are kindly asked to record these.

2 Future Funding Watch – Calling for evidence from the sector
Less than two years after NICVA’s 2015 Cutswatch campaign, we may be facing into yet another funding crisis for the community and voluntary sector.
The recent political crisis and subsequent election currently leaves us budgetless after March, and unclear as yet who will be deciding on the future allocation of the £500 million of government funding which the sector receives in grants and contracts to deliver vital public services and benefits.
If, after the 2nd March election, the political parties are still unable to reach agreement on a new Assembly Executive and budget within the month, then it is yet to be seen how, and by whom (whether by Civil Servants or Direct Rule Ministers) decisions on future funding for the sector next year will be made, and with ongoing pressure on public budgets and no government to prioritise spend, what cuts may follow. The experience of previous cuts to funding to the sector in 2015 highlights the vulnerability of this funding when such pressures exist.
NICVA has been meeting with key officials to highlight our concerns about this issue and in order to ensure we have as full as picture as possible of the impacts of current and potential future cuts in government funding for the sector, we have launched an online survey to gather relevant information. We will use the results of the survey to support our efforts to bring this issue to the attention on policy and decision-makers so please do contribute.

3 £6.1 million Peace IV Funding offered to Derry City and Strabane District Council.
Derry City and Strabane District Council Peace IV Partnership Board are delighted to announce that approximately council has been offered £6.1m worth of funding under the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme.
Welcoming the funding offer the Mayor, Alderman Hilary McClintock stated “This European Peace funding to help build positive relations locally will make a significant difference on the ground across our entire council area from rural areas, towns and villages and in the city. Peace funding is strongly focused on reconciliation, challenging prejudice and promoting understanding of diversity and good relations.’
“Our programme, which was developed in direct consultation in the spring with local communities, includes grant aid opportunities for local community organisations and tendered programmes with community and youth impact as well as a number of council led initiatives for children and young people, sports development, capital works, community planning and community development.” indicated Gearóid Ó hEára, Chair of the Peace IV Partnership Board.
The council’s Peace IV team will be responsible for the delivery of a ‘PEACE Action Plan’ focused on three key areas: ‘Children & Young People’; ‘Shared Spaces and Services’ and ‘Building Positive Relations’.
“The roll out of the programme on the ground will take a few months to get going,” indicated Drew Thompson, co-chair of the Partnership Board “ I would encourage interested organisations and individuals to sign up for Peace IV e-bulletins by going onto the web page www.derrystrabane.com/Peace-IV where there is also more detailed information on the programmes. Signing up for e-bulletins will ensure that you get information on opportunities to tender or apply for grants or importantly, opportunities to take part in events and programmes and project steering groups. The Board are keen to see people and groups from all communities and identities benefitting from this funding.”
“The programme will run ‘on the ground’ roughly from June 2017 to December 2020.” Sue Divin, Programme Manager for Peace IV explained. “Projects will include opportunities for youth to engage in employment, democracy, community and citizenship programmes. There will also be a broad range of cultural, sports and environmental programmes as well as specific programmes to develop shared spaces in parks, interfaces and contested rural areas. Issues such as bonfires/alternatives to bonfires; sectarianism, racism and dealing with the past are tackled throughout the programme. All programmes are on a cross-community basis, encouraging people to meet and develop friendships across identities and to engage in a sustained way with diversity.”
The Peace IV Programme is an EU funded programme designed to support peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the border region. It is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). Match-funding for this element of the PEACE IV Programme has been provided by the Executive Office in Northern Ireland and the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government in Ireland.

The workshop will look at the three ‘obsessions’ outlined within the plan and the seven areas that have been identified as areas of focus for the West. 9 Pain Workshops
In February 2014 the PCC published a report telling the stories of 2,500 people living with chronic pain. Within the report several recommendations were outlined on how long-term pain sufferers could be supported.
One recommendation was the development of a web-based tool that ensures people living with chronic pain have information and support in ways that meets their needs.
The PCC are working in collaboration with the Public Health Agency, the Innovation Lab, software developers, health care professionals and service users to develop an innovative web based tool.
This web based tool will help people living with chronic pain to better understand and self- manage their symptoms and improve information and support services for people living and working with chronic pain.
We are holding two engagement sessions to hear from people who experience pain to support this important work.
Do you live with chronic pain? Are you frustrated that the information you seek is not readily available? Perhaps you would like to explore self-management options but don’t know where to start? Your experience and ideas can help us answer these important questions together and develop tools that service users and carers can benefit from.

18 Lifting the LID: Call for Participants
Lifting the LID - Extra! would like to draw attention to a number of upcoming international opportunities we are providing in the next couple of months.
We are looking four young leaders between the ages of 18 and 25 to represent The Inside Out Programme in Slovenia between 6th & 14th May.
In addition, we are looking for one adult practitioner to travel to a meeting of the International Youth Work Trainers Guild in Austria, between 6th & 12th April.

LID International Opportunities
'A European Dream' Youth Exchange: we're are currently looking to hear from young people between the ages of 18 and 25 who are interested in taking part in an international youth exchange in Slovenia with young people from The Netherlands, Poland, Turkey and of course, Slovenia. The exchange will run from Saturday 6th May until Sunday 14th May. The project will address a wide range of contemporary issues and geopolitical events affecting Europe. 'Responding to the needs of young people today - youth trainers reboot': is a meeting organised by the International Youth Work Trainers Guild and will take place in Austria between Thursday 6th and Wednesday 12th April. The meeting will gather youth work trainers and experts from EU member states and neighbouring regions in order to discuss the current challenges in youth work in Europe, and to identify ways how international youth work trainers can address these developments. Last call for 'E+ Ambassadors'
We are currently in the process of finalising our panel of 'E+ Ambassadors' to help deliver the 'LID+' Project and we are particularly interested in hearing from any practitioner across Northern Ireland who has assessed Youth in Action/Erasmus+ applications and/or has successfully applied for and hosted a YiA/E+ programme over the years. If you know what it takes to make a successful application then we wish to hear from you. Your experience and knowledge might prove invaluable to others. Training and information will also be provided alongside other Ambassadors from 7-9th March in Derry. Ambassadors will be recompense for the time. 20 Waving, Not Drowning, The Mental Health Roadshow
Bread and Roses Theatre Company’s pioneering new production Waving, Not Drowning, The Mental Health Roadshow. Directed by Rosa Stourac McCreery. Edited and facilitated by Ronan Carr.
A montage of short plays, sketches and songs created by Natalia Colmenarejo, Niall Cranney, Aideen Devine, Anne Gallagher, Sinead Gallagher, Brenda Kelly, Kathleen McCreery, Cassie Riggs and Aoife Toner.
This exuberant theatrical experiment was initiated and organised by Mark McCollum, Kathleen McCreery and Tanya McLaughlin, and facilitated by Kathleen. Entertaining and flexible, the project aims to challenge stigmas and stereotypes and ensure that the voices of those who experience mental health problems, and those who care for them, are heard.
Bread and Roses is embarking on a cross-border tour February and March 2017.

21 Special Theatre Lab with Dave Duggan marks 20 years of Sole Purpose Productions
Sole Purpose Productions are delighted to announce that co-founder and former co - Artistic Director, the dramatist and novelist Dave Duggan, will be the guest facilitator at a Special Theatre Lab on Saturday 11th March, one of the events to mark 20 years of the company. Dave, along with current Artistic Director Patricia Byrne, set up Sole Purpose Productions in 1997 to make new theatre on social and public issues that is relevant, challenging, engaging and entertaining.
Dave Duggan is a dramatist and novelist. He wrote the Oscar-nominated Dance Lexie Dance and the Stewart Parker Trust Award winner, Gruagairí. His play, Denizen, toured courthouses. He directed 10 of his own stage plays. His latest book, an imagined memoir called RELATED LIVES, is available in print and on-line. Sole Purpose has been running innovative Theatre Labs for 17 years, they have helped many writers progress their work from page to stage. Theatre Lab is a place where writers with scripts for film, stage, radio or TV can see their work stood up in a creative environment. An active 'on the floor' event, with professional actors reading the parts, this is a wonderful opportunity for writers at all stages to receive constructive feedback on their work.
This Theatre Lab takes place as Sole Purpose is touring Ireland with their latest production, Blinkered by Patricia Byrne. This hard hitting piece tackles the subject of mental health and suicide and is accompanied by an innovative dramatised discussion. This Special Theatre Lab will take place in The Derry Playhouse on Saturday 11th March, 10am to 4.30pm. Participants do not need to have completed a full-length script but are required to submit up to 5 pages of a script they are working on, with a five line synopsis. When you were little every box was a magic box!
You could endlessly hide in the box, put toys and things in it, forget them, and then have the pleasure of re-discovering them later. You could travel through space in the box, or surf the big waves, or glide through the snowstorm, or ride through the woods, or just have a cup of tea, or a snooze there. You could paint it, cut and stick things on it, even make a costume out of it.
Do you remember the excitement when you didn’t know what was inside, and you could hardly wait to open it to find out?

This playful children’s dance/theatre performance premiered at Echo Echo Festival of Dance and Movement 2016 and is suitable for a very young audience aged 2 years and up. Also suitable for grown-ups to help remind them of the importance of fantasy and playing games!

23 Consumer Parliament event - Friday 24 March, 9.30am - Free event
The NI Consumer Council is holding its first Consumer Parliament event on Friday 24 March, in Spires Conference Centre (opposite Grand Opera House/Jury’s Hotel) in Belfast, from 9.30am – 2.30pm.
It is an opportunity for consumers of all ages from across Northern Ireland to raise the issues most important to you. It is also an opportunity for consumers to learn more about your consumer rights, and to receive lots of free resources to enable you to exercise those rights, save money and protect yourselves against things going wrong.
There will be speakers covering the Consumer Council’s key areas of work (energy, transport, water and postal services) as well as partner organisations and stakeholder exhibition stands to provide more useful information and advice for consumers.
The event is free to attend, refreshments and lunch will be provided and a special all day £5 parking rate will be available.
