Christmas can sometimes be a stressful time of year for many so why not take some time out and join NWCN for our “Networking & Well-Being” event with:

Mrs Ireland 2018 - Jennifer Taylor, Derry City & Strabane District Council's Community Safety Wardens and music with Ruth McPhillips

                 

Jennifer will tell her story about her 5 year battle with Mental Health Issues, including Depression and Anxiety.  Jennifer says that "1 in 4 people will suffer from some sort of Mental Health issue and I think it is important, especially in this city, to make sure there are proper, well-funded and high functioning services to help those with Mental Health issues"

The Community Wardens will be on hand to talk about personal safety and security around your home.  Lots of bogus callers emerging at this time of year and the Wardens have a range of equipment that can help around the home such as sensor lights, door alarms, secure key boxes plus loads more  - all of which are free to access & free to fit.  The Wardens will also have lots of free goodies on the day for everyone...

We will end the event with a lovely hot lunch and more sweet treats and enjoy some beautiful music with Ruth McPhillips while we eat and network!

  • Raising the Standards of Fundraising in NI Workshop 

18 January 2017, 1:30-4:30pm
Holywell DiverseCity Community Partnership

This free workshop facilitated by the Institute of Fundraising Northern Ireland and funded by the Halifax Foundation for NI will inform and educate on fundraising codes of best practice and self-regulation for any charity involved in fundraising. There are a number of workshops running across Northern Ireland with this one being in the North West.

The purpose of this project is to develop best practice standards and compliance with self-regulation in fundraising across the charity sector in Northern Ireland. This workshop will provide guidance and support to charities to understand implications of fundraising self regulation and grow best practice with trustees, staff and volunteers and essentially those who benefit from charity services such as supporters, donors and funders of charities.

Participants will get the chance to learn about developing their fundraising best practice and compliance with legal obligations as well as benefitting from being more aware of the legal and reputational risks to fundraising practice and understand better their responsibilities.

  • Free Basic book-keeping for small charities

24 January 2018, 7:00pm to 9:30pm
Holywell DiverseCity Community Partnership

A free two hour practical workshop for treasurers, or those that keep the financial records, of small charities to help them establish appropriate financial systems.

Good financial management is an integral part of ensuring good governance as it not only helps charity trustees to fulfill their legal duties but also helps to protect the charity from mismanagement of funds.  Having robust financial procedures in place will help to improve organisational capacity and effectiveness.

The focus of this workshop will be on basic bookkeeping and financial management including setting up and maintaining the books (cash book, cheque ledger, petty cash); cash handling, understanding charity funds and accounts and the role of the treasurer.  

As we’re expecting a lot of demand for this training, we’re limiting places to one per organisation in the first instance and holding a waiting list for other interested members of the organisation.

3   Universal Credit Information Session – Strabane

 

As you may be aware Universal Credit will roll out for customers in the Strabane district on Wednesday 17th January 2018.

 

As part of this roll out I would like to invite you to an informal coffee morning in the Strabane Jobs and Benefits Office on Thursday 21st December at 9:00.

 

This will be an opportunity for you to see the changers that are taking place in the Strabane Office in preparation for Universal Credit delivery and provide us with the opportunity to build relationships with local community and advice groups.

 

There will be an opportunity to ask some questions although we will be unable to address queries relating to specific benefit claims.

4 Valued Voices - Trauma Healing Education Programme

 

“Trauma is in the nervous system, not in the event.”  Peter Levine

"Trauma is a natural part of human existence and the capacity to integrate the experience and grow from it is also part of our human capacity. The difficulty arises when whatever the person did to survive, is no longer working and they are experiencing levels of distress including mystifying physical symptoms, mental health concerns, psychological and relational distress."
 

Facilitated by Brid Keenan, this free six day trauma healing education programme offers a range of activities – experiential learning, brief theoretical inputs, Q&A, reflection on the healing work participants are already doing.  
 
This programme (10am -4pm each day) will be delivered in two venues across the DCSDC area - in the  Junction Room, Holywell DiverseCity Community Partnership, Derry-Londonderry and in the Koram Centre, Strabane

 7 NWMF Intergenerational Intercultural encounter event 2017

The North West Migrants Forum and the North West Academy of English would like to invite you to attend our Intergenerational Intercultural encounter event in celebration of International Migrants' Day  on December 15, 2017 at Hollywell Trust Building, located at 
8-14 Bishop Street, Londonderry BT48 6PW  starting from 7.00pm.

The event will start with the screening of a documentary that tells the stories of men and women travelling along West African migration routes to Italy.  Wallah - Je te jure" followed by facilitated round table discussions on the life stories of migrants living in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area. 

Migration draws increasing attention in the world nowadays. Mixed with elements of foreseeability, emergency, and complexity, the challenges and difficulties of international migration require enhanced cooperation and collective action among countries and regions.

The North West Migrants Forum  is actively playing a catalyst role in this area, with the aim of creating more dialogues and interactions within communities in the North West Area , as well as propelling experience exchange and collaboration opportunities.

Our event aims to engender the active participation of older and senior citizens, foster intercultural dialogue and enhance community commonalities and diversity, with particular emphasis on promoting dialogue and social inclusion of migrants. The celebration will also be marked with international music, dances and food!

International Migrants' Day is an annual  global observance  held  on December 18 to recognize the efforts, contributions, and rights of migrants worldwide. Organisers says that Santa will also be expected to show up to the event bringing the spirit of Christmas and solidarity to the event. 

With your support, we are hopeful that events like these will help towards building understanding and appreciation of the many different cultures that will create a flourishing Northern Ireland for our future generations as well as promoting and encouraging dialogue as a means to promote diversity.

THE THIRD SPACE – A PEACE IV PROJECT
The Third Space, delivered in partnership with Verbal Arts Centre, is a new and innovative programme merging creative activities with the Interventative Relationship Model to deliver high impact and transformative engagement with 800 young people who are marginalized and disadvantaged from Belfast, Derry-Londonderry, Donegal, Cavan and Fermanagh.

  • Nurture and develop personal and civic capacity among young people who struggle to engage with their community and wider society
  • Contribute to lower levels of community divisions through positive personal development, purposeful learning and interaction.
  • The Third Space utilizes the existing infrastructure within Extern as well as Community and Youth Centres, healthcare settings and other local venues to deliver a fully accessible, customised programme of activities tailored to meet the needs of all participants.

This project has been supported by the EU’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the SEUPB.

Do you want to make a difference? Is the protection of the rights, safety and dignity of patients who are research subjects important to you? Are you interested in research which benefits patients and service users? If so, then we would welcome your involvement and support in the ORECNI service at BSO.

 

An HSC REC consists of a Chair, Vice-Chair and up to 16 committee members. At least one third of the membership must be lay, the remainder being experts with a clinical, social care or research background. A diverse range of research studies are reviewed by committee including commercial and non-commercial clinical trials as well other research involving patients/service users, and use of their tissue and data.

 

The Business Services Organisation (BSO) seeks to appoint to full membership:

· At least 2 lay persons (a lay member generally is a person who is not from the health or allied health care professions. On this occasion there is a need for lay people who have never worked in the HSC or NHS)

 

· 2 experts (Persons from a wide range of health, health care and allied health care professions; persons with experience in clinical pharmacology or registered pharmacists; persons with professional qualifications or experience relating to the conduct of or use of statistics in clinical trials; persons with professional experience in social work or social care or psychology and scientists).

 

The BSO also seeks to appoint Deputy Lay or Deputy Expert members from the range of backgrounds described above.

17  Keeping Children Safe: Designated Officer Training

 

This one day certificated training course is suitable for Designated and Deputy Designated Child Protection Officers.

It will cover:

  • knowledge of the legal context of child protection;
  • an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Designated Officer;
  • knowledge of Health and Social Care Trust structures and processes; and
  • exploration of issues and concerns around referrals and sharing information.

All participants must have completed a child protection awareness raising course prior to attending.  Keeping Children Safe: Training for Staff and Volunteers or Keeping Children Safe: Training for Managers, Supervisors and Management Committee members are suitable foundation courses.

 

Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis and are limited to a maximum of five per organisation.
