8The EU Settlement Scheme in Light of the Pandemic - What Needs to Change?
The Brexit Civil Society Alliance invite you to our upcoming webinar The EU Settlement Scheme in light of the pandemic - what needs to change? taking place on 6 August, from 11:00 - 12:30.
Covid-19 has had a devastating impact on those in most vulnerable positions. Amongst these are EU citizens living in the UK, particularly those with pre-settled status or who have not yet applied to the EU Settlement Scheme to secure their rights in the UK. The Brexit Civil Society Alliance has been working with organisations from across the third sector to highlight how Covid-19 has impacted on EU citizens and the ways in which adjustments to the Settlement Scheme by the government could help.
This webinar will explore issues relating to the access to social security benefits such as Universal Credit, maintaining continuity of residence with travel restrictions in place, and access to the scheme for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. Our speakers will then set out what changes need to be made, and what individual organisations can do.
9Invite to the Launch of the Covid-19 Feminist Recovery Plan for NI
Given the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on women globally, the Women’s Policy Group have prepared a COVID-19 Feminist Recovery Plan for Northern Ireland. This plan sets out WPG recommendations for recovering from COVID-19, as elected representatives and decision-makers must take into consideration the institutionalised inequalities that exist, and co-develop recovery planning with the communities affected. These recommendations will cover economic justice, health, social justice, equality, the implications of Brexit and examples of international best practice.
The WPG will be hosting a formal launch online of the WPG Feminist Recovery Plan on Wednesday 29th July at 2pm. A range of women from marginalised communities in NI will be speaking at this event on their experiences of COVID-19, alongside an overview of some of the recommendations. For more details, and to book your place at this event, please contact Rachel Powell, Women’s Sector Lobbyist.
The full WPG Feminist Recovery Plan can be downloaded here.
The Young Foundation has recently been conducting research on the impact of Covid 19 on people. What has surprised us is that, as a percentage of the population, more people across NI have participated in this digital research.
We are now looking at developing a team of community researchers across NI. I would hope you could spend a few minutes completing our short survey and perhaps sharing it with your friends, family and co-workers?

Positive Ageing Month is a month-long campaign of events and activities for older people that recognises and celebrates the contribution older people make to their communities and the wider society.
This year’s campaign will focus particularly on activities that will promote active and healthy ageing and reduce social isolation and loneliness. A comprehensive programme of events will be developed that encourage older people to take the 5 steps to well-being everyday ie Be Active, Give, Connect, Keep Learning and Take Notice. This year, in light of Covid19, a mixture of activities is being planned that enable older people to connect both ‘virtually’ online and ‘physically’ where this is permissible within the Covid19 guidelines.
The International Day of Older Persons, which is held annually on 1st October, will kick-start this year’s month-long campaign. If you have any events or activities that are taking place during October why don’t you contact DCSDC’s Age Friendly Co-ordinator at agefriendly@derrystrabane.com and get your event included and promoted in the Positive Ageing Brochure and social media.
