8New “Make Art and Feel Good” Projects starting soon in Derry and Strabane
They say everyone has a book in them... or maybe you are a budding Picasso? Or the next Ed Sheeran or Banksy? Or maybe you're that undiscovered talent waiting for the spotlight?.. Then maybe you just want to meet new people and share a story..... well a new project can start you on that creative road. Two free 10 session projects will be starting; one in Derry, based in Studio 2 Arts Centre, on a Tuesday morning and in Strabane, based at the Strabane Health Improvement Project, on a Friday morning. These projects are supported by the Clear Project, the Public Health Agency and the Arts Council NI.
Project promoters Greater Shantallow Community Arts, with their “Arts In Mind” programme, believe that everyone can benefit from participation in creative activities. As a group you decide what your want to learn and we will provide the tutors, equipment and materials to make it happen. All we need is 2 groups of 15 men and a room and then together we can make the creative magic take place.
Whether you have an interest in art, or not, you can benefit from our ’Art for Well-being’ programme. We are looking for 2 groups of 15 men (over 30 years of age) to get involved in an exciting new project where you can learn new skills, make art and have a great time for 10 weeks starting in later this month. The groups will get to try out new arty stuff and meet other people, have a cuppa, share a story or just have a chat or maybe a giggle or two. Artistic activities are agreed from a creative menu and delivered by professional artists and facilitators. This is a wonderful chance to learn, share and experience an exciting 10 sessions of making stuff. Starting this month “Arts in Minds” believe that creativity is fundamental to a fulfilled life and contributes towards good positive mental health and we want you to be part of this.
Our programme will provide groups with the tools of self-expression in order to enrich their experience of life. By providing a safe space and a supportive ’group’ ethos, individuals are encouraged to flourish and build self esteem and confidence by making art and sharing their story with likeminded others. This project encourages exploration of different artforms in order to identify ways in which individuals can best express themselves. Come and enjoy the sessions and use your art tell your story.... only 15 places available in both venues and did we say....it is all free... Interested? Don't delay as places are limited.

For The Love of Mary Exhibition by Mel Bradley Launch on Friday 18th October @ 7pm
Supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland SIAP Award, For The Love of Mary is a project that examines the relationship between Marian Iconography, the grotto shrine culture and the position of women in Ireland.
Looking closely at the Virgin Mary and the ideals prescribed to her, this exhibition details the stories gathered through conversations with women around their experiences of this figure that is so prevalent in Irish culture.
For The Love of Mary is an exhibition that maps the journey to finding the Virgin Mary through these conversational stories. It will include an interactive shrine, a video installation, spoken word and poetry pieces as well as the interview/conversations as a series of podcasts that are available to listen, both online and as part of the exhibition. On set days throughout the duration of the exhibition there will be single performances of a piece from the collection that has been written in response to the experiences shared.
