3  Nationwide: The Community Grants programme

Nationwide Building Society was founded to help people into homes of their own and its ambition that everyone should have a place fit to call home stands firm today. The Nationwide Community Grants programme awards grants of up to £50,000 to local housing projects that will strengthen local communities by supporting the most vulnerable by:

  • Preventing people from losing their home
  • Helping people in to a home
  • Supporting people to thrive within the home environment

Nationwide believes doing what is right by their members and their communities is at the heart of what it means to be a building society. Following a member vote in 2007, Nationwide invests at least 1% of pre-tax profits to support good causes each year.

The fund is open across the UK:

  • From 3 June – 5 July in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, West of England, North West, North Midlands and the North East of England
  • From 21 October – 22 November in the South

13 Public info session on the relocation of the new Visitor Information Centre

A public information session to discuss proposals to relocate the Visit Derry offices from its current Visitor Information Centre at Foyle Street to the ground floor units of 1-3 Waterloo Place will take place on Thursday June 20th from 1-4pm.

The purpose of the event is to allow the public to find out more information about the proposals that include the development of a £1.075m new international, state-of-the-art Visitor Welcome Centre experience that will service the needs of local and international visitors.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Michaela Boyle, encouraging the public to come along to the information session to find out more about the proposals and to view the designs, said the proposed new Visitor Information Centre will be an orientation hub, located in the heart of the city. It will promote the city and district and wider region and act as a gateway from which to explore the North West of Ireland.

To date Council has appointed an Integrated Consultant Team and an Interpretative Designer to deliver on the project that has been funded by Tourism NI £500,000, Derry City and Strabane District Council £350,000 and the Department for Communities £225,000.

Mayor Boyle says the public information event is a unique opportunity for the public to find out more about this exciting project.

“This is a hugely significant project for Derry City and Strabane District Council and an integral part of our Tourism Strategy. We feel it is important to engage with the wider community and to keep them informed of our plans for this exciting tourism project. We are hoping as many people as possible come along on 20 June to find out more about it and get a look at the proposed design concepts,” she commented.

The Mayor added that the new facility is due to open in the summer of 2020 and will create an engaging immersive visitor experience that promotes the regions Culture and Heritage offering.

Further information about the project can be obtained by contacting the Council’s tourism development section at 028 71253 253.

14 Petition · Complete Phase 3 Works to Derry-Belfast Train Line ASAP - Not in 2027!

The Department for Infrastructure have decided that no improvements to Derry's second-class rail service will happen until 2027 AT THE EARLIEST.

In 2001 the railway track between Derry and Coleraine was near the end of its life. At that time only 500,000 passengers used the line to Belfast every year.

Stormont and Translink's response was to shut the line west of Coleraine. Local rail lobby ‘Into the West’ was established to fight this, and their successful campaign saved the line and forced Stormont to upgrade the track instead.

The Derry-to-Belfast railway line now carries over 3 million passengers a year (up from 500,000 in 2001). Since hourly trains were introduced from Derry in 2017 (after Phase 2 of the track modernisation work completed), passenger numbers west of the Bann have increased 61% - the biggest growth in rail anywhere on the island. When rail services here are improved, more people use them. But until Phase 3 is completed Derry's second-class service can't improve any further.

Phase 3 is the key that will unlock the following major improvements for rail in the north-west :

1) Faster Journey times to Belfast.
2) More frequent trains.
3) Express services, with fewer stops.
4) A new station in the Eglinton area.
5) Through-trains from Derry to Dublin.
6) The possibility of line extensions (e.g. to Strabane or Letterkenny).

Phase 3 is therefore the key to any future rail improvements in the north-west.

To help make it happen please sign this petition calling on the Department for Infrastructure, the NI Secretary of State and Derry & Strabane District Council to reprioritise the Phase 3 works to happen as soon as possible – starting no later than the end of 2020.
