1 Basic finance training for small charities

A series of free practical workshops for treasurers or personnel of small charities to help them establish appropriate financial systems to keep their organisation safe.

Good financial management is an integral part of ensuring good governance as it not only helps charity trustees to fulfil their legal duties but also helps to protect the charity from mismanagement of funds.  Having robust financial procedures in place will help to improve organisational capacity and effectiveness.

The focus of this workshop will be on basic recording keeping and financial management including setting up and maintaining the books (income and expenditure ledger, petty cash); cash handling, understanding charity funds (restricted and unrestricted) and accounts and the role of the treasurer.  

As we’re expecting a lot of demand for this training, we’re limiting places to one per organisation in the first instance and holding a waiting list for other interested members of the organisation.

2 Small Capital Grants Programme

Co-operation Ireland has been appointed by the Department for Communities (DfC) as the Intermediary Funding Body for the 2018/19 Small Capital Grants Programme for Northern Ireland. 

The purpose of this Programme is to promote Partnership and Collaboration among Voluntary and Community organisations.

As such the amount of grant available to apply for will be dependent on the amount of partners within the application:

2 partner groups  = can apply for £1,500

3 - 4 partner groups = can apply for up to £3,500

5+ partner groups  =  can apply for up to maximum £5,000

To be eligible for grant assistance organisations must

• be constituted voluntary /community sector organisations
• have an annual income of less than £100,000 per year.  

This grant is only eligible for expenditure on capital items and must be incurred from the date of award until 31 March 2019.

3  Joseph Rowntree Northern Ireland

Vision: The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust aims to fund work which will contribute to the ongoing transformation of the Northern Ireland conflict. 

Its vision is of a Northern Ireland with the following characteristics: 

• a constitutional settlement which takes account of the range of political views of the people of Northern Ireland, Britain and the Republic of Ireland and which is underpinned by the principles and values of participation, human rights and equality 
• a non-sectarian political culture which is inclusive, transparent, responsive and accountable 
• effective processes and mechanisms for managing societal and political conflict without recourse to violence 
• a respectful and inclusive public discourse about the Troubles, which promotes a shared understanding of the root causes of past violence, and a public policy framework which facilitates truth, justice and reconciliation 
• a vibrant, pluralist and activist civil society, responsive to the needs of the most vulnerable and able to hold the government to account.

Funding priorities

JRCT is interested in funding work which:

• addresses the root causes of violence and injustice, rather than alleviating symptoms
• cannot be funded from other sources
• is likely to make a long-term, strategic difference. 

It has identified the following priority areas:

1. Strengthening human rights and equality

This includes work to secure and monitor implementation of human rights commitments by the state, work which strengthens a culture of human rights, as well as new initiatives on economic, social and cultural rights.

2. Supporting inclusive, non-sectarian and participatory politics

This includes initiatives which strengthen the voices of marginalised groups in public policy-making, foster positive, non-violent approaches to expressing and managing political difference and which cultivate the independence of the community and voluntary sectors.

3. Supporting processes of demilitarisation

This includes initiatives which encourage groups engaged in armed struggle to take steps towards exclusively non-violent strategies and to engage in comprehensive processes of transition to civilian life.

4. Dealing with the past

The Trust is concerned primarily with work that promotes a shared understanding of the root causes of past violence, or which encourages government to implement initiatives to address the legacy of violence at a societal level.

Other factors
JRCT is particularly interested in receiving applications related to women’s participation in all of these areas.

In addition to applications from Northern Ireland, it is open to receiving applications from Britain and the Republic of Ireland for work related to the above areas, and for work with an all-Ireland focus.

Local work will be supported only where it is likely to have a wider impact, for example if it is testing a model which can then be replicated, or is addressing a local issue that has wider social or political implications.

Specific exclusions

In addition to JRCT’s general exclusions, the following types of work will not be funded: 

• the delivery of basic services to people in need, including welfare advice, women’s refuges, basic skills training, etc
• the core costs of community centres, local women’s groups, local voluntary sector infrastructure organisations or similar community level groups
• work with or for children and young people
• work related to health or disability
• community development or community relations projects that do not relate directly to the priority interests outlined above
• any form of personal healing or therapeutic work, including counselling
• historical research, documentation or archival work
• work related to the past which is primarily concerned with particular events during the conflict.

5 Compassionate Campaigning - Campaign Training and Support Programme

The Compassionate Campaigning Project of St Columbs Park House (SCPH) is delivering another exciting Compassionate Campaign Training and Support Programme beginning 22^rd Jan 2019 until 25^th June 2019.

Delivered fortnightly in SCPH, the programme will offer a range of skills and support such as:

• Principles of Non Violence in action
• Media Training
• Power analysis
• Voice Coaching & Presentation Skills
• Developing a Campaign
• Understanding relevant legislation
• Compassion and care for self and others
• Awareness of systems and interdependence within them

The five months of the training programme will enable participants develop their chosen campaign issue with the support of the project coordinator.

Guest speakers will include local campaigners who can inspire participants with insights into the successes and disappointments of their own campaigns.  There will also be site visits to local campaigns.

Childcare, travel and caring costs can be supported if required.  Programme is free to participate in but commitment to attendance and developing campaign over the six month period appreciated.

A bursary to support development of your chosen campaign is available upon completion of the Training and Support Programme with a presentation about your campaign in final session.

Kinship Care NI invite applicants for the position of: TRAINING & OUTREACH WORKER

‘KINNECTIONS’ PROJECT (Ref: KCNI.TO.R1.01)

To deliver training, workshops and information sessions to kinship carers, and develop a network of support, including support groups and family recreation for kinship carers and their children.

Fixed term, funded until the 29^th October 2020 at 37.5 hours per week (then subject to funding)

Salary: £21,111 per annum

Based in Derry/Londonderry, but will involve travelling to other parts of Northern Ireland.

• A relevant recognised qualification in health and social care, community development or related field (Minimum NVQ level II or equivalent).
• Five GCSEs (minimum) at Grade C or above (or equivalent) including English Language and Maths.
• Proven work experience working with vulnerable/disadvantaged children, young people and/or families.
• Proven work experience delivering education/training programmes in the community.
• Excellent work ethic.
• A current driving licence with access to a car. (Can be waived in the case of applicant whose disability prohibits driving, but who is able to organise suitable alternative arrangements)/
• IT skills.

As the run up to Christmas begins FWIN are once again launching their Christmas Appeal where our members can remember and support local families who are struggling at this time. 

How you can get involved and help:  Buy an extra present when Christmas shopping for local families in need for a child aged 0 - 16 years. 

You can drop the gift, wrapped, unwrapped, shoe box or gift bag (stating clearly if it is for a boy or girl and what age group) into Holywell Building, 8-14 Bishop Street, Derry~Londonderry.

"For most of us Christmas is a wonderful time of the year, full of fun and happiness. However for some local families it's a time of struggle and difficulty. We have held Christmas appeals for local families for the last three years and know just how tough

some people are finding it to cope at this time. In previous years when we've held our appeal we have been astounded by the kindness and generosity of 

people from our City.’

12 Void Gallery - Information for Listings January 2019

Liam Crichton with Autumns

Void are delighted to welcome Liam Crichton with Autumns to exhibit Stereo Object as the first exhibition of 2019.
Crichton creates large-scale sculptures and installations that investigate the built environment. His research revolves around concepts of urban voids, hauntology, anti-monuments, post-minimalism, and silence. Aesthetically driven and predominately site-specific, his work is often characterised by a dialectic approach that challenges traditional perceptions and the cultural environment.
Crichton’s installation at Void continues his investigation into the monuments, their meaning and their resonance, both symbolically and materially. Crichton’s field recording of the Walker Memorial (1828) explores the contentious nature of its history whilst invoking a presence of absence, or equally, the absence as presence. The recordings of the monument will capture the resonance of sound through the material of the built environment. In collaboration with Derry musician Autumns (Christina Donaghey) the sounds will be mixed to create a soundtrack for the sculptural environment in the gallery space.
 
The installation of amplifiers replicates the dimensions of the plinth in sculptural form. The connection between the sound and the sculpture is one of physicality, the viewer through their presence activate the piece through interaction, both with the sound and their presence.

Artist’s Bio
Liam Crichton is a Scottish artist currently based in Belfast. He graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art in 2010 and is known for creating large-scale sculptures and installations that investigate physical space. Containing references to, and elements of a post-minimal realisation, his aesthetically driven and predominately site-specific work is often characterised by a sense of dichotomy that challenges traditional perceptions and cultural surroundings. In a systematic and reductive process, he breaks down the impression of the familiar to its bare essence. Crichton has recently exhibited in Edinburgh, London, Philadelphia, Dublin, and Belfast.

Join Ed at Void to explore the art of listening using a simple audio recorder and a listening device that will allow you to record various sounds in the gallery, exploring every day materials, to create your own unique sound piece.
