3 DARE to Lead Change
The DARE to Lead Change Project (DARE) is a new and exciting project supported by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). It is lead by Bryson Charitable Group in partnership with TIDES Training and Consultancy.
DARE stands for Dialogues About Race and Ethnicity. The programme seeks to inform and change what citizens know and think about the mix within Northern Ireland society by introducing multifaceted conversations about cultural, racial and ethnic interdependence.
The DARE programme is reaching out to people across Northern Ireland and the border region, from different cultural, community and religious backgrounds with the aim of building sustainable relationships. We are inviting people who come from both sides of our traditional backgrounds as well as those who find themselves, for one reason or another, living in Northern Ireland and the border counties. We are keen to engage individuals, community groups, schools, workplaces in various ways in this diversity/integration programme, over the next three years.

4 Consumer Parliament coming to Derry/Londonderry 23 March
Consumers get to have their say!
Residents in Derry City and Strabane District Council area will soon get to have their say on the consumer issues that concern them, thanks to The Consumer Council which is staging a 'Consumer Parliament', in partnership with Derry City and Strabane District Council, at the Guildhall on Friday, 23 March.
Welcoming the Consumer Parliament to the City, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Maolíosa McHugh, encouraged residents to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity: "Whatever your age, wherever you live and whatever you do, I hope you will come along to this event and raise any consumer concerns you have directly with the people who can help you," he said.
"Not only will you be able to have your voice heard, you will also be able to learn about your rights as a consumer, get tips to reduce your household bills, and get help with your enquiries and complaints."
Sheila McClelland, Chair of The Consumer Council, expressed her appreciation of the support that Derry City and Strabane District Council had provided, including the use of the Guildhall: "We received extremely positive feedback from participants at our first Consumer Parliament in Belfast last year, so we are very excited to be able now to provide the same opportunity to consumers in Derry City and Strabane District Council," she said.
"Northern Ireland may be small, but the issues consumers face can be very different depending not only on their situation but also where they live. For that reason, the Consumer Parliament will include a dedicated session on flooding as well as sessions on postal services, transport issues and home energy.
"We want to hear directly from residents about the issues they have and ensure they are provided with the necessary support."
The Consumer Parliament will run from 10.00am to 3.30pm on Friday 23 March at the Guildhall. Registration will open at 9.00am.
A consumer clinic - to provide one-on-one support to residents - will run simultaneously throughout the day.
There will also be exhibition stands from a range of consumer organisations, utilities and service providers.

What Is Drink Wise Age Well?
The Drink Wise, Age Well Project is a BIG Lottery funded programme which aims to influence and inform policy and practice in preventing alcohol misuse amongst adults aged 50 and over
FREE Training for Staff/Volunteers
Training sessions can be delivered over half day, one day or two days. These courses are designed for staff/volunteers who directly support individuals who are over 50 and who want to increase their knowledge and skills around alcohol issues. While sessions can be tailored to meet the needs of the group, they usually cover the following topics:
- Consider older adults and the reasons why they may be at increased risk of alcohol misuse
- Identify alcohol misuse in the over 50's, and consider ways in which alcohol may impact on their live
- Consider, and practice, the ways in which to respond to alcohol misuse in the over 50's whom you encounter
- Reflect on your own confidence and skill-base in relation to over 50's and identifying alcohol misuse and/or potential alcohol related harm in later life
The training is informal and relaxed and will help increase your confidence in supporting older people
In the recent past sessions have been delivered to health & social care teams, students, carers groups as well as a wide variety of community/voluntary organisations throughout the project areas.

As the programme is Peace 4 funded through DCSDC, the venues for the delivery of the programme will be located throughout the Council area beginning on the first day at the Holywell DiverseCity Community Partnership and then on second day moving to St Columb’s Park House. The Man Who Fell To Pieces is a story about John who is falling apart, literally. He spends days holding himself together with tape and cling film and other DIY tools from B&Q. He keeps his traumatic experiences to himself even though Caroline, his partner knows that something is not quite right. Meanwhile Mum is in the habit of breaking things around the home just so she can give Henry a ring and have him come round and save the day. When Ivan does eventually fall apart, Caroline pops him into a suitcase and travels around Belfast trying to work out how to put his life back together.
The Man Who Fell To Pieces is a ground breaking musical comedy that deals with the profound themes of Mental Health in Northern Ireland. The project is supported by the Arts Council Northern Ireland and Belfast City Council.

17 Centenary Wood immortalised in writing by Northern Ireland poet
A new poetry collection, by local writer and poet Sam Burnside, pays tribute to a special Centenary Wood in the beautiful Faughan Valley.
The Woodland Trust-owned Brackfield Wood, not far from Derry/Londonderry, is one of just four flagship woods taking shape across the UK to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War.
Still in its infancy, Brackfield will be home to some 40,000 native trees – a flourishing, respectful and lasting reminder of those lives lost, from across the island of Ireland, during the war.
Sam Burnside’s poems in By Brackfield Bawn: On being in Brackfield Memorial Woods1 show his deep-rooted love of the natural, rural world; with the famously scenic Faughan Valley, its river and wildlife, at the core.
The acclaimed poet gives his nod of approval for the creation of this new memorial woodland. The thousands of saplings, a thriving tribute, will one day link the fragments of ancient woodland that dot the banks of the beautiful River Faughan.
It seems that the strength of nature – from the longevity of the valley’s centuries-old trees to the predictable cycle of the seasons – is in stark contrast to the frailty of human life.
Patrick Cregg, director of the Woodland Trust, said: “The poems are ready and waiting to be enjoyed by anyone with a love of words, nature, and the countryside. They are also incredibly poignant and, alongside the beauty of the natural world, there’s a real sense of sadness and loss that many of us can relate to.
“We’re so grateful to Sam for capturing and immortalising the essence of Brackfield through his unique style of writing.”
BBC presenter Helen Mark, in the Foreword, said: “From his words you’ll know that Sam’s been at Brackfield in all weathers, through all seasons and has drawn both inspiration and pure joy from the character and beauty of wood and vale, of the river and wildlife. His deep sense of place for this landscape is palpable and I relish walking in his footsteps with this collection in hand.”
Dr Sam Burnside MBE added: “Spending time at Brackfield became a true learning experience. The most important thing for me was the discovery of the profound silence that lies at the heart of this – and indeed any – woodland.”
Extracts from some of the poems will also form a poetry trail at Brackfield Wood. Eight stone sculptures, strategically placed and each carved with lines of poetry, will lead visitors into and through the wood, finishing at a central commemorative feature.
With almost 30,000 saplings already springing to life and new entrances, pathways and benches in place, a visit to Brackfield is an absolute must.
