1 Cost of Living Crisis - Tough Times, Smart Solutions

How can we best support your organisation and help fight your corner through the current cost of living crisis?

Date: 25 May 2023
Time: 1:30pm to 4:30pm
Venue: DiverseCity Community Partnership, Holywell Building, 10-12 Bishop Street.

NWCN in partnership with NICVA would like to invite you to this timely event.  This workshop is an opportunity for you and your organisation to share the challenges you are facing.  Voluntary and community organisations are on the front line of the cost-of-living crisis supporting people and communities, all while facing rising demand for services, falling income, and rising operational costs.

Our sector can't continue to respond to this crisis without support.

This event will be a safe space to share your concerns, learn from other organisations and have a say on the support your organisation and beneficiaries need.

2 The ARN Foundation:  Tackling Isolation Fund

The ARN Foundation’s Tackling Isolation Fund will support organisations to deliver projects in support of older people affected by the cost of living crisis; and will be managed by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland.

Among the hardest hit by the cost of living crisis are older people. Older people are often on fixed income, and the rising cost of food and fuel has often led to having to choose between eating or heating.  In recognition of the needs of older people, the ARN Foundation has developed a new Fund, the Tackling Isolation Fund, with a particular focus on food and fuel.

Priorities:

  • Supporting older people to keep warm;
  • Supporting older people to access a nutritious meal;
  • Reducing isolation and vulnerability of older people through supporting participation in activities;
  • Enabling older people to access technology, and to potential benefits and entitlements that they may not be aware of;
  • Beneficiaries who are rurally isolated.
Closing Date: May 26, 2023 13:00

5 Women and Girls Match Fund

Equality is essential for women and girls to dream freely, achieve proudly and live boldly. That’s why we’re working with amazing charities committed to serving the women and girls in our communities. The Women and Girls Match Fund is here to multiply generosity, tackle gender inequality and stop discrimination.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Be a UK-registered charity with a Charity Commission number or tax-exempt status and an annual income of at least £25,000 (as per last filed accounts).
  • Charities which are registered on BigGive.org (free to register).
  • Charities seeking to raise either £2,500, £5,000 or £10,000 in public donations (to be doubled by the match funds). Charities are able to use the campaign to raise unrestricted funds.
  • Charities working to to improve the lives of vulnerable, disadvantaged or underrepresented women and girls within the UK and internationally.
  • Charities that are led by, for and with women and girls. To assess this, we will look at whether your governing documents specifically mentions women/and or girls, whether you have a majority female board, who your beneficiaries are and your web presence (if your organisation has one).
  • We would encourage applications from charities that are led by Black and minoritised women and girls, LGBTQI women and girls, or Disabled women and girls. These applications will be prioritised in our assessment process.

9  School Employer Connections – funding cut

School Employer Connections (SEC) – the student / employer work placement broker that has operated in the North-West and across Northern Ireland for the last twenty-four years (formerly as FOSEC) has recently been advised of a significant cut in the amount and duration of its funding for 2023/24 by its principal funder, the Department of Education. A registered charity, SEC has typically received 80% of its annual operational funding requirement from the Department.

In a letter to the organisation the Department has offered SEC an allocation of two month’s budget cover (for April and May 2023) or £20,000, during which time it hopes that a final budget position can be reached. This contrasts to the Department’s most recent funding provision to SEC of £110,000 for the 2022/23 year which ended on 31 March 2023. On top of the news of only two months funding for the current year the Department has cautioned that once the final budget position for 2023/24 is confirmed “it is unlikely that any funding will be available to support existing programmes”, such as those currently provided by SEC. The budget confirmation is expected in a couple of months’ time.

14 GHOSTS show, Derry- NI Mental Health Arts Festival

GHOSTS by Gemma Walker-Farren and Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company

Sometimes the scariest stories are the ones we tell ourselves.

GHOSTS is about our relationship with fear and how it is an ‘ancient and otherworldly’ feeling. It is about the ghosts we carry with us and how we can sometimes be ghosts in our own lives.

Childhood fears to adult anxieties are woven together with Greek myths and ghostly tales. Incredible projections and soundscapes carry the audience seamlessly from claustrophobic bedrooms to the vast halls of Hades with horror and heartbreak in between.
  • Written and performed by Gemma Walker-Farren.
  • Directed by Tonya Sheina.
  • Sound, video and lighting design by Barry Davis.
REVIEWS for previous performances of GHOSTS
skillful and interesting, well acted and a brave piece of work.

 …fantastic concept for a show and so beautifully well-crafted and well acted.
 Dark and funny and creepy. I was completely hooked from the start.
 Perfect blend of funny and harrowing….so inspiring to see such a professional level of work.
