1 The Ideas Fund: new grants programme to improve mental wellbeing

North West Community Network and Developing Healthy Communities, are delighted to be partnering with the British Science Association (BSA) and the Wellcome Trust on The Ideas Fund.

The Ideas Fund is a new grants programme that will enable the public in the Derry & Strabane Council area to think about, develop and test ideas to help improve mental wellbeing.

The Fund has been designed to help people tackle problems that matter to them by connecting them with research professionals who can help bring their ideas to life.

Initially the Fund will focus on ideas related to mental wellbeing, with £3.29 million funding to support community initiatives in four geographical areas of the UK including the Derry & Strabane District Council area.

The other three locations covered by the Fund include the Scottish Highlands and Islands, Oldham in Greater Manchester and the city of Hull.

Reaching people who may have been overlooked by research in the past is a key aim of The Ideas Fund – particularly in rural or minority ethnic communities, amongst the young, marginalised and socioeconomically disadvantaged people.

4 National Lottery Grants for Heritage 2021-22

Applications are now open for National Lottery Grants for Heritage from £3,000 to £5million. This marks a return to our core business, but it is not a return to ‘business as usual’.

The impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic means we have revised our approach to what we will fund. We have created a supplementary document that sets out our Priorities for National Lottery Grants for Heritage for 2021-22. This is a formal part of the programme guidance until April 2022.

In short, we will prioritise heritage projects that will:

  • boost the local economy
  • encourage skills development and job creation
  • support wellbeing
  • create better places to live, work and visit
  • improve the resilience of organisations working in heritage

Every project will need to achieve our inclusion outcome, ‘a wider range of people will be involved in heritage’.

We will also expect all projects to demonstrate that they are building long-term environmental sustainability into their plans, as appropriate.

Explore our Outcomes and Good Practice Guidance for more information.

Updates to application guidance
In line with the COVID-19 context, we have made some updates to our application guidance.

Changes include:

  • COVID-19 considerations: you will need to factor in assumptions about social distancing and these assumptions should not entail significant financial risks for your organisation. Please refer to national and local guidance and restrictions about incorporating public health measures into your assumptions.
  • Risk: when assessing your application, we will make a measured judgement on the potential risks your project might face due to the current pandemic situation. You should also carefully consider contingency costs within your application.

7 Council seeking responses from older people to Age Friendly survey

Derry City and Strabane District Council has launched a baseline survey aimed at establishing how older people feel about various issues that can impact on their quality of life.  The findings of the survey will contribute towards the development of a new Age Friendly Strategy for the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian Tierney, said that “Derry City and Strabane District Council and its partners are committed to improving the quality of life for older people living within the City and District and by taking part in the survey, older people will shape how age friendliness is approached and addressed moving forward.

“Older people know best what they need, so it is really important that they are at the centre of any efforts to create a more age-friendly community and ultimately support individuals to live long, healthy and fulfilling lives.”

Jackie Parkington, Council’s Age Friendly Co-ordinator added: “As an Age Friendly Community, it is important for us to all work together to identify and make the changes in both the physical environment and social environment that are relevant to enable people to lead healthy and active later lives.  I would really encourage as many people as possible to complete the survey so that we can clearly identify the issues that are important to older people and where they feel improvements need to be made. The baseline survey is a tool that can help us to gather this information.

19 ‘Feel Good Families’ - Feel Good February 2021

This past year has been tough on everyone and we have all had to get creative in order to look after our own wellbeing and that of those we love and care for. With that in mind, we would love to know some of the ways families’ have tried to stay connected and feel good this February.

Most of us are now familiar with the ‘Take 5’ Steps to Wellbeing and probably do many of these things on a regular basis:

Connect
Connect with the people around you: family, friends, colleagues and neighbours at home, work, school or in your local community. Think of these relationships as the cornerstones of your life and spend time developing them. Building these connections will support and enrich you every day.

Be active
Go for a walk or run, cycle, play a game, garden or dance. Exercising makes you feel good. Most importantly, discover a physical activity that you enjoy; one that suits your level of mobility and fitness.

Take notice
Stop, pause, or take a moment to look around you. What can you see, feel, smell or even taste? Look for beautiful, new, unusual or extraordinary things in your everyday life and think about how that makes you feel.

Keep learning
Don’t be afraid to try something new, rediscover an old hobby or sign up for a course. Take on a different responsibility, fix a bike, learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set a challenge you will enjoy. Learning new things will make you more confident, as well as being fun to do.

Give
Do something nice for a friend or stranger, thank someone, smile, volunteer your time or consider joining a community group. Look out as well as in. Seeing yourself and your happiness linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and will create connections with the people around you.

As part of our Dry January/ Feel Good February 2021 campaign the South Eastern and Western Trust Drug and Alcohol Connections Service’s want to hear back from you.
We want you to show us some of the ways your family takes some of the ‘Take 5’ steps to support your wellbeing.

To enter, please send a photo with a short explanation (approx. 100 words) letting us know what parts of the ‘Take 5’ you use to boost your family wellbeing.
Our favourite family entries will win vouchers to retail stores that can be used to boost family fun time/ activities in the future.

21 Glashedy Island Exhibition 12th-26th February 2021

Whist all us Derry ones are missing days out in Donegal why not visit our online exhibition of paintings by Eden Place Art Centre’s Wednesday Evening Painting Class.

While enjoying the craic at the Wednesday evening painting class some time ago, one of the ladies vocalised it would be a good idea to put on a Glasheady exhibition as three or four students were painting different versions of that scene. And so the idea was born!

Glasheady is an un-inhabited island 1 mile offshore from Pollan Bay. The island is mostly rock with an expanse of green on top hence the name: Glashedy or Gláis éidigh which means green garment or cloak.
The sea surrounding it is quite shallow giving rise to the impressive waves which crash ashore giving it a very appealing painterly view.

The class tutor David Fahy explains ‘One of the big draws for artists is the vast variety of views which are constantly changing, be there a storm or a calm day, but what ties the island to the canvas is the amazing light and of course, the dramatic Donegal sky. We hope the viewer enjoys the many works in a variety of mediums and styles in this thought provoking, eye opening exhibition.’

The exhibition will be available to view on our website on the ‘Current Exhibitions’ page from 12th-26th February.
www.edenplaceartscentre.com
For more information on the exhibition or Eden Place Arts Centre contact Judi: info@edenplaceartscentre.com
