1Exciting News....The Ideas Fund – Development Coordination Partners
North West Community Network (NWCN) and Developing Healthy Communities (DHC) have been appointed as Development Coordinators to work with the British Science Association to deliver their Ideas Fund programme. The Ideas Fund is a grants programme which enables groups to develop and try out new ideas that address problems related to mental wellbeing. Derry City & Strabane District Council is one of four areas within the UK who will benefit from the programme. The scheme has been designed to test a new way of funding that connects communities with researchers to access knowledge, research skills and resources.
There are two levels of funding available: grants of up to £18,000 to help develop ideas that are at a very early stage; and grants in the region of £90,000 to support, adapt and expand ideas that have already been developed and tested. The fund will run from January 2021 to October 2023. NWCN & DHC will guide and support potential applicants in the Derry & Strabane area with developing their ideas and facilitate connections between communities and researchers.

3 Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) small project support open for applications
The Derry and Strabane PCSP call for small project and engagement support is now open for applications for projects taking place between April 2021 and February 2022.
Encouraging groups across the city and district that have an interest in community safety to apply the Chair of the Derry and Strabane PCSP Councillor Martin Reilly said, “The public notice inviting applications is being advertised in the local press this week. The closing date for the receipt of applications is 3pm on Monday 19th February. Last year the PCSP provided over £200,000 of support to a range of local initiatives and projects aimed at reducing fear of crime, tackling anti-social behaviour and addressing issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, road safety and domestic and sexual violence. This year’s call has a similar budget and will support projects running during 2021/22. I would encourage groups that are working to enhance community safety and reduce crime to submit their application to the PCSP. It is important that all applications are submitted to the PCSP before the deadline as applications submitted after the date will not be considered.”
In order to apply to ESB’S Energy for Generations Fund, projects must meet the following criteria:
• The project must operate in one of the following areas: 1) Suicide
We will fund services and projects working to promote positive mental health and to build capacity, skills and training to make effective suicide prevention interventions.
We have a particular interest in funding programmes with a focus on youth suicide and positive mental health promotion for young people.
2) Homelessness
We will fund services and projects benefiting homeless people and those at risk of homelessness.
3) Educational Access and Support
Proposals are invited from the following:
Early years and early primary school projects focusing on literacy and numeracy;
Secondary level proposals promoting science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM);
Adult education return-to-education programmes aimed at those long-term out of work.
The proposed projects should:
Be informed by evidence and focused on outcomes
Provide tangible and local benefits
Be sustainable after ESB funding ends
Leave a lasting legacy in local communities
The project must be located within the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland.
The Executive Office has launched an eight week formal consultation on the new draft Outcomes Framework for the Programme for Government (PfG) along with a twelve week Equality Impact Assessment (EQIA) Consultation, both commencing on 25 January 2021. We are inviting you to share your views.
Draft Programme for Government Outcomes Framework
The Programme for Government focuses on achieving wellbeing for all. The new draft Framework sets out nine ambitious Outcomes aimed at making a real and positive difference to people’s lives. To ensure that the PfG is informed by citizen and stakeholder engagement and codesign, we would like your views on the high level draft Outcomes Framework – that is, the Outcomes themselves and the key priority areas that underpin them.
The consultation document contains the new draft Outcomes Framework and sets out the wider context to the PfG. It explains how it will provide the starting point for longterm strategic policy planning by the Executive as well as delivery of key strategies and actions moving forward.

Professor Lewis is an Honorary Professor at Queen’s University Belfast and CEO at Examen. Her research specifically looked at sperm DNA fragmentation and early pregnancy loss.

Mellow Deeds is an integrated choir made up of those living with dementia and their carers, volunteers and Deeds staff based in the Old Library Trust in Creggan.
The emphasis is on enjoying music, making friendships and participating in music in the wider community. We aim to work towards two to three annual performances such as: Deeds Events/Seasonal Events e.g. Christmas/Community Events like the Every Voice Festival/Intergenerational Events with Schools and also any other opportunities that arise.
We are looking for a choir leader, preferably with experience of both leading a choir but also working with dementia either on a voluntary or paid basis. The new choir leader would be asked to lead live sessions weekly on Facebook during Covid restrictions but then face to face thereafter based here in the Old Library Trust. This would be paid on a sessional basis.

17Launch of a public appointment recruitment competition for the Drainage Council
The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) is launching a recruitment campaign to appoint 6 Non- Executive Members to the Drainage Council Northern Ireland. DfI are looking to appoint a member from each of the following specialist areas; Tourism, Conservation, Drainage, Agriculture, Industry and Fisheries.
The Department will recognise less traditional career patterns and experiences, such as community involvement or voluntary work, as well as those found within the employment field. Applicants can use examples from within working or personal life.
Applications will be welcomed from all sections of the community.
Women, younger people, people with disabilities and people from ethnic minority communities are currently under-represented on DfI Boards. Applications from members of these groups would be particularly welcome.

Over the last four decades the prison population in the US has soared to more than 2 million. Through privatisation and disproportionate targeting of people of colour, the marginalised and the poor, the justice system has been used as a tool of oppression and the source of corporate profit. Today, ‘the land of the free’ is the world’s biggest jailer. Coinciding with the escalation of mass incarceration in the 1980s, a new dance culture emerged from Black, Latinx and Queer communities embattled by the criminal and law enforcement policies.
Bring Down The Walls looks at the US prison industrial complex through the lens of house music and nightlife. The connection between a system that locks the body up and music that sets it free comes from the years in which the director Phil Collins worked with a group of men incarcerated at Sing Sing, a maximum-security prison in upstate New York. After access was revoked, he recorded a compilation of house classics with vocalists who have formerly been incarcerated, and in 2018 set up a communal space in the heart of Manhattan’s court district dedicated to the struggle for social justice and prison abolition. During the day, discussions were led by people who have been directly impacted by the system, and those working to radically change or abolish it. At night, the space transformed into a dance party hosted by collectives from New York City’s vibrant club scene.
Pulling these strands together, Bring Down The Walls reflects a coexistence of two fields of knowledge; the political/academic and the physical/experiential – one born out of education, advocacy and activism, the other through sharing time, space, and energy – proposing the dance floor as a site of personal and collective liberation and new ways in which we could come together as a society.
The screening will be accompanied by a set of reading lists on prison abolition and prison struggle from radical, independent publishers.
