The Centre for Cross Border Studies in conjunction with Holywell Trust, North West Community Network and Community Dialogue cordially invites you to
Towards a New Common Chapter: A grass-roots vision for cooperation within and between these islands
Friday 29th June at 1100am, Holywell Trust, Bishop Street, Derry
This action research project, which has been undertaken by the Centre for Cross Border Studies, is funded by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust. It is intended to facilitate the development of a “New Common Chapter” representing grass-roots support for collaborative and sustainable North-South and East-West relations. The Centre for Cross Border Studies has been working with community organisations from both sides of the border – involving in particular, the active participation of women, young people and Protestant community organisations – to produce a New Common Chapter that voices the needs of civil society. This work will result in informed and motivated community organisations on the island of Ireland able to engage with policies and policy-makers on the value of cross-border cooperation and ensuring that it addresses the needs of civic society.
The project is now in its third stage, with the participating groups having agreed a draft “New Common Chapter for cooperation within and between these islands” at the end of the second stage.
During this event Dr Antony Soares, Deputy Director, Centre for Cross Border Studies, will explain how the project has progressed and invite your feedback on the document as well as providing the opportunity to network on a cross border basis. There will also be an input from Rachael Craig Derry City and Strabane District Council on their Community Plan and Carnegie application.
Don’t miss your chance to have a say.

4 Environmental projects set to benefit from multi-million pound scheme
Environmental projects across Northern Ireland are set to benefit from millions of pounds thanks to the latest round of funding from the carrier bag levy.
Strategic schemes that protect and enhance our habitats, health, wellbeing and water quality can benefit from DAERA’s Environment Fund, the pre-application is now open.
David Small, DAERA’s Head of Environment, Marine and Fisheries Group, invited not-for-profit groups and local councils to submit their applications for 2019/2022 funding. “The Environment Fund is a very important source of funding that helps the Department support strategic environmental projects to safeguard, develop and enrich our prized landscapes and environment.
“Projects must be strategic and delivered at a province-wide or sub-regional scale, or on DAERA-owned sites. They should address our key themes including species monitoring, securing habitat quality, raising awareness of good practice, encouraging change in environmental action by society, and facilities for enjoying our beautiful countryside."
Mr Small encouraged groups to be creative in their applications. “We want to encourage applicants to maximise the potential for cost efficiency by seeking new and innovative delivery coalitions or partnerships.”
The closing date for pre-applications is 23 July 2018.
Among the initiatives currently in receipt of funding are projects to recruit and train volunteers for large scale bird monitoring surveys; carry out habitat and species conservation activities; maintain and promote walking routes; and encourage recycling.
The aim of the carrier bag levy is to reduce the number of bags in circulation, help the environment by reducing the amount of plastic and paper going to landfill and help councils save money in landfill tax. Since the introduction of the levy approximately 1 billion single use carrier bags have been taken out of circulation enabling Northern Ireland to become both cleaner and greener and a better place to live and do business.

My name is Sarah Compton and I am carrying out a research project for my MSc Psychology in Education Degree. The project is about what influences people’s attitudes to communities different from themselves. The point of the research is to understand why people feel the way they do about others and how this information can be used to build a supportive and inclusive education system for all children regardless of their background.
Included in the email is a link to the online questionnaire. When you click on the link you will be asked to complete a consent form. Once you start the questionnaire it should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete. All the data collected for this study will be anonymous. We will not ask for your name or any other identifying information. The data will be stored in a password protected file and will only be accessible to the researchers involved in the project. The anonymous data may be used in presentations, online, in research reports, in project summaries or similar. In addition, the anonymous data may be used for further analysis. Your individual data will not be identifiable but if you do not want the data to be used in this way please do not complete the questionnaire.
If you do agree to complete the questionnaire you are free to leave any questions unanswered or to stop completing the questionnaire altogether at any point. Once the questionnaire is submitted the data cannot be withdrawn as it is anonymous so there will be no way to identify your data. The data will be kept for approximately 3 years after which point it will be destroyed.
