1Mapping exercise to identify researcher and community engagement in Derry & Strabane
As a community or voluntary organisation in the Derry & Strabane area, if you are involved in any research or initiative with Ulster University – we need your help!
Ulster University, North West Community Network and Developing Healthy Communities have partnered to run a project to address systematic challenges community groups and researchers face when working together.
The project will see the University and community partners set up a joint community research and innovation collective. The collective is undertaking a mapping exercise to establish a comprehensive picture of university and researcher and community partnership initiatives, taking place between Ulster University and the Derry & Strabane community and voluntary sector.
Following the mapping exercise, the collective will hold a series of events to showcase existing work and develop opportunities to foster new collaborative projects. Watch this space!

The programme funded by the Public Health Agency is looking to support sports clubs and community organisations to deliver physical activity and healthy living programmes.
By working in partnership we can provide support in 3 main categories up to a maximum value of £500.
• Coaching
• Facility Hire
• Equipment
Priority will be given to early and later years projects. Programmes must last a minimum of 8 weeks and be
completed before end of March 2024. We can also offer advice on planning and delivering your activities.

3 Heart Research UK and SUBWAY® Healthy Heart Grants
Heart Research UK and SUBWAY® Healthy Heart Grants of up to £15,000 are available for original, innovative projects that promote a healthy heart and help reduce the risk of developing heart disease in your area and across the country. They will award up to five grants at £15,000 in each region of the UK.
Projects must work solely with adults and have a main focus on one or more of the following areas: healthy eating, physical activity, smoking or alcohol.
Northern Ireland window opens 17 August 2023.

Project funding for charities aligned to our funding priorities and age range. Project funding
Shine Bright funding enables charities across the UK to purchase items and resources to protect and support the children they serve through the cost of living crisis. Charities are asked to provide details of how our funding can assist, and which items would be purchased through an award. Grants are available up to £1,500 per successful application. 5 PEACEPLUS Theme 1.1 DCSD Council Bid - Public/Community Briefing
It’s been a long co-design path, but by the end of August the DCSDC PEACEPLUS Board will have submitted our £8m funding bid for the PEACEPLUS Theme 1.1 funding. Although this is not an announcement that we have secured funding, it is a key milestone and will be a useful update for Local Growth Partnerships and key community groups who may ultimately be interested in tendering for any of the 58 project opportunities under our Action Plan.
We’re hosting a public/community update to feedback to communities about where we are in the process and what to expect over the next while. Once we’ve actually secured funding (not anticipated until January 24), then a more formal programme launch will be organised. Information about our bid, and a full copy of the PEACEPLUS Co-Designed Local Action Plan, will be available on our website from September.

7Apply now for the Apex Community Development Bursary!
Apex Housing Association has announced it will award a bursary worth up to £18,000 to two individuals currently working in the field of community development in Derry~Londonderry or Dungannon.
Supported by the ‘Housing for All’ Shared Housing Programme, the successful candidates will begin a community development course at Ulster University in September 2023. The course duration is flexible, with candidates completing between one and four years of study. A condition of the bursary will be the promotion of good relations outcomes in their ongoing community work.
The course is delivered at Ulster University’s Belfast campus one day per week (27 days per year).

You do not need to have been involved in the current Capacity Building Programme to participate.

10Child Focused Domestic Abuse and Safety Planning Conference
La Dolce Vita Project 3rd Domestic Abuse and Safety Planning conference will be hosted this coming October in the Verbal Arts Center.
The conference will be “Child focused” with an aim of raising awareness into: Domestic abusive Coercive Controlling Alienating behaviors.
We are thankful to NLCFNI who have provided a contribution to support costs to host this event. Local and regional media will be covering the conference.
11Workshop: Support Young People Who Disclose Abuse
Working with young people? Do you want to gain awareness and understanding of abuse and how to handle a disclosure of abuse appropriately?
Title: Empowering Professionals to Support Young People who Disclosure Abuse Date: Tuesday 29th August Time: 2pm - 4pm Location: Online via Zoom Cost: £30 per person
If you work with young people in any capacity and want to improve your knowledge and understanding of sexual abuse and domestic abuse/abusive relationships to enable you to respond appropriately and safely to a disclosure of this nature, then this workshop is for you!
By the end of this workshop, we aim that you will have a better understanding of:
Domestic and sexual abuse
The types and effects of domestic and sexual abuse
Coercive control
The impact domestic and sexual abuse has on young people
Barriers young people may experience to disclosing and engagement
How to respond to disclosures
Risks around domestic and sexual abuse, and disclosures
Tackling ageism and ageist attitudes is central to the work of the Commissioner for Older People and one of his key priorities until the end of his term in 2024.
Ageism is the stereotyping, prejudice and/or discrimination of people based on their age, or perceived age.
The Commissioner proposes to act against ageism through:
- Encouraging Government to improve policy and legislation affecting older people.
- Examine why ageism happens and how to reduce it.
- Educating the public on why ageism happens and how to stop it.
As part of this crucial work, the Commissioner wants to hear directly from older people on their experiences of ageism. He will be hosting events in every county in Northern Ireland in September and inviting local older people to come along and take part in a lively discussion on this topic. Details of these events and how you can take part are below. If you cannot make the event in person but wish to have your say, please complete our survey. It takes just 5 minutes to complete.

13 BFI Short Courses: Open Call for Local Young People
My name is Tomala White. I’m a local filmmaker and the coordinator for the BFI Film Academy Short Course at Nerve Centre (Derry-Londonderry). We’re currently recruiting young people aged 16-19 interested in filmmaking for this year’s BFI Film Academy Short Course.
I will be conducting site visits out to schools and community groups with information sessions from Monday 4 September to Monday 11 September. I would love to come and talk to your young people about this opportunity. Please let me know a date and time that suits you!

BFI Film Academy offers opportunities for ambitious 16-25 year olds, anywhere in the UK, to get to know more about film and how to forge a career in the screen industries. Nerve Centre has been the lead delivery partner in Northern Ireland for over 10 years now!
This free, industry-led short course is designed for those wishing to take their first steps into the screen industries as well as those more experienced.
