1 Esmée Fairbairn Foundation - funding priorities

Arts, children & young people, the environment, food or social change.

Esmée Fairbairn Foundation aims to improve the quality of life for people and communities throughout the UK both now and in the future. We do this by funding the charitable work of organisations that are building an inclusive, creative and sustainable society.

Priorities
The Foundation offers grants to organisations doing legally charitable work in the UK across the following range of priority areas:

  • The arts
  • Children and young people
  • The environment
  • Food
  • Social change

Applicants should apply for the amount that they need. The Foundation does not set limits and makes grants across a fairly wide spectrum of sizes.
In the past grants have ranged from £2,000 to £1.5 million with the support lasting from one to five years. Funding can be used for core or project costs, including staff salaries and overheads.
Small grants of £60,000 or less are also available for one-off projects, or for testing out new ideas and collaborations (general running costs are not supported at this scale).

Who Can Apply
Charities and not-for-profit organisations with a regular
annual turnover of at least £50,000, that are properly constituted and involved in legally charitable work in the UK.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a track record to successfully deliver the work.

How To Apply
The Foundation currently receives about 2,000 first- stage applications each year, of which only one in ten is successful. As a result, it has created the online eligibility quiz to ensure the applicant's request for funding fits one of the funding priorities.

Applicants should read the guidance notes which can be downloaded from the Foundation's website
https://esmeefairbairn.org.uk/home

The Foundation operates a two stage application process. First-stage application forms are available to complete online at the Foundation's website. Successful applicants will then be invited to complete a second-stage application form.

This is a rolling programme and applications may be made at any time.

2 The Screwfix Foundation

The Screwfix Foundation is a registered charity set up in 2013. We have a clear purpose of raising funds to support projects that will fix, repair, maintain and improve properties and community facilities for those in need throughout the UK. How do we raise money? We raise funds throughout the year to support causes that will change people’s lives. We work with both national and local charities, donating much needed funds to help all sorts of projects, from repairing buildings and improving facilities in deprived areas, to decorating the homes of people living with sickness and disabilities.

The Screwfix Foundation Facts
The Screwfix Foundation currently offers local registered charities and not for profit organisations funding of up to £5,000. All applications are reviewed individually by our team on a quarterly basis, the review dates are in February, May, August and November. All successful applications will be contacted by post, email or phone to arrange the next step. Unsuccessful applicants will be contacted within one month of the review meeting. If on the first instance an application is unsuccessful, we welcome any future applications charities may wish to make.

Before applying for The Screwfix Foundation funding, please ensure your charity:

  • Is a registered charity or not for profit organisation.
  • Is helping those in need by reason of financial hardship, sickness, disability, distress or other disadvantage in the UK.

3  Making good things happen where you live?

People from across the North West area who want to make good happen where they live are invited to apply for a special weekend at the famous Eden Project in Cornwall.

Thanks to people who play the National Lottery, local people will have accommodation and transport along with the weekend community camp costs all paid for. To apply you need to visit Eden Project Communities website - community camps.

Applications are being considered now by Eden Project Communities Northern Ireland Network developer Niamh Scullion for these opportunities which are to be held at the award winning Eden Project in Cornwall during September and November 2019.
Those attending can look forward to three days of inspiring talks, workshops, engagement activities and story sharing with around 60 other community activists and organisers. These can have a life-changing impact on many.

Hugh Hegarty from Derry visited the community camp in November 2018 and subsequently set up MENd, a mental health initiative for men in Derry.  Hugh said “I must say that all I had been previously told about how good the camp was still didn’t properly prepare me for what I experienced. I loved every second of it, from making new friends from all areas of the UK to learning do much about other aspects of community projects as well as the training we received. Undoubtedly one of the best weekends I've ever had.”

Speaking about the programme Northern Ireland manager Grainne Mccloskey said “ Eden Project Communities camps provide opportunities to link in with a network of more than 1000 other people across the UK to share ideas, inspiration, and experience, and to re-energize your community project and yourself. Participation in The Big Lunch annual day for neighbours has already afforded me some knowledge of the passion there is for community here and the richness of the landscape and community, so I believe people have as much to share with others as they have to gain from participating in this opportunity in Cornwall and hopefully bringing home ideas to try out locally. When we play the National Lottery we are hoping to win big and change our own lives, it’s good to know that proceeds are being put back into our communities and with Eden Project Communities we hope to cross pollenate so that people bring each others ideas and inspiration home to try locally. Im looking forward to meeting this years candidates and see what they go on to achieve.”

If you know someone who might be interested – the application is simple and should take no more than 15 minutes to complete. Contact
nscullion@edenproject.com or visit https://www.edenprojectcommunities.com/community-camps

6 Seminar in Germany - What's worth working for?

The Inside Out Programme is looking for six participants for the following seminar:

What's worth working for? The tasks for the Democracy we believe in

  • Wednesday 21st August (arrival day) - Sunday 1st September (departure day) to be held in Bad Bevensen & Berlin, Germany.

Food and Accommodation is provided and a Travel Allowance of up to €275 is also available, all of which is funded by the Erasmus+ Programme.  A Participation Fee of €35 applies.

Participants should be aged 18 and over and from the UK.  As The Inside Out Programme is based in Northern Ireland we target participants primarily (but not exclusively) from Northern Ireland.

We are looking to recruit six participants, be that students or young leaders (18-30), youth work practitioners or practitioners with a remit for young people who are all willing to actively and fully participate in the programme but are prepared to engage in post-programme activity that ensures learning is maximised and shared within their organisation and/or community, be that a community of their choosing.

You will be joined by participants from Germany, Poland and Lithuania.  The programme will be in English and will be delivered in two locations, Bad Bevensen and Berlin.

Please note that you will be responsible for making your travel arrangements as a demonstration of your commitment to taking part but we can offer advice where necessary.  You will be reimbursed up to a maximum of €275 for travel following completion of the programme.

The Idea
What is it worth to work for? Which are the most important challenges to be addressed if we want to make democracy run smoothly? What do young people believe in, which issues matter to them, how and where do they want to assume responsibility? This project is designed to use youth work as a means to have an impact and build the future. We will share our experiences from countries as different as Germany, Northern Ireland (UK), Poland and Lithuania.

1. History – how we have become who we are:
How did we become the people who we are? Which values had those in mind, who shaped our families and societies? We will look at the historic narratives and identities. We compare family biographies and text books, news reports and public debates.

2. Democracy – how we express what we want:
How do we decide, which policy will do? Is democracy always the rule of the majority? Who feels represented and who feels left behind? Talks with political decision makers will address the crucial issue of populism and xenophobia in times of migration.

3. Diversity – how we include those around us:
How do we perceive what keeps societies together? Do we have homogenous and diverse societies in Europe? Are we part of the “Christian occident”? Diversity training, dialogue exercises and field visits to NGOs and projects of civil society will help us find answers to those questions.

4. Prospect – how we know what to do:
How do we design, what we will do? Here we will identify the tasks at hand. We will describe what’s worth working for – and shape concrete activities. This is a down-to-earth approach on active citizenship and involvement.

HOW TO APPLY

7  All Party Group on Learning Disability PIP Experience Project

The All Party Group on Learning Disability, lead research partners Mencap NI and The Law Centre NI alongside a number of organisations, are conducting research into Personal Independence Payments (PIP).   We want to talk to people with a disability/ long term health conditions and their carers/supporters to find out their own experiences of PIP.   We are trying to find out what works well , what needs to be improved within the PIP process and what are people’s recommendations to improve the process.

We are asking organisations and individuals to support our research by getting involved in the following components:

  1.  Share on social media (PIP Twitter/Poster Final)
  2. “We want to hear about your experience of the #PIP process.  What went well? What didn’t go well?  How would you improve the process?  Please fill in and share this PIP Experience Survey surveymonkey.co.uk/r/PIPexperience  #Informationispower #Haveyourvoiceheard”
  3. Fill out our online survey: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/PIPexperience
  4. Participate as an anonymous case study – we are looking for examples of best practice in PIP and what went well as well as examples where claimants or supporters felt they had a negative experience during the PIP process.  If anyone has someone who may be interested in participating – please contact fiona.cole@mencap.org.uk for more information.

As many organisations have expressed publicly and in private, individuals with a disability or long term health condition are being disadvantaged in the process -this project aims to highlight not only these experiences, but examples of good practice alongside recommendations to make the process better for all claimants.
