1 £840,000 Comic Relief Investment to be available in Northern Ireland
 
The Community Foundation for Northern Ireland is delighted to have been appointed as an Intermediary Grant Maker on behalf of Comic Relief. 
 
The Community Foundation for Northern Ireland and Comic Relief both believe in the importance of

  • Directly investing in communities
  • Lived Experiences of people in shaping and improving lives is key in shifting the power.
  • Partnering with others who have greater experience, knowledge and connections
  • Adapting to change learning from lived experiences;
  • Influencing future policy and programmes from a lived experience perspective. 
From these shared perspectives the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland will over the next two years invest £840,000 of support from Comic Relief across four strategic development areas as follows:
  • Children Surviving and Thriving:
  • Global Health Matters:
  • Fighting for Gender Justice:
  • A Safe Space To Be:

Year one applications will open 10.00am Monday 3rd June 2019 closing 1.00pm Wednesday 10th July 2019. Applications can only be made via the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland website: www.communityfoundationni.org.
 
To support community and voluntary sector groups with a potential application, a series of information sessions will be held across Northern Ireland during the month of May commencing with the following:

2 Welfare Changes – Invitation to an update on Universal Credit

You are invited to attend an update on Universal Credit in either Enniskillen, Belfast, Newry or Derry/Londonderry.

This event will provide an update on Universal Credit, what it means for our claimants, and how those working in the Advice Sector can support their users who claim Universal Credit.

Briefing Session Details:
All sessions will begin at 10:00am, with registration and light refreshments available from 9:30am. It is anticipated this event will finish at 12:00noon. You need only attend 1 session.

4 Domestic Abuse, Violence Safety Conference

La Dolce Vita Project will be hosting a Domestic Abuse, Violence Safety Conference to highlight the real life safety and support implications of domestic abuse, violence victims. 

This conference will give you understanding into the importance of supporting someone while they remain living in or planning to leave an abusive environment. Particular attention will be placed on safety planning, resources available throughout Derry/Londonderry with the opportunity for you to network with various domestic abuse, violence, safety services.

5  The Churches Trust ‘Celebrating Commonality, Celebrating Difference’ Project
 
Following the success of the first year of the Celebrating Commonality Celebrating Difference programme, the Churches Trust is now inviting people to participate in this innovative and enriching programme.  The project is supported by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

The participant group will explore the Abrahamic Faiths; Judaism, Christianity and Islam. No previous knowledge is needed; rather this course is learning about the underlying ethos, commonalities and differences between the Abrahamic Faiths, and will include a series of study trips and workshops between May 2019 and April 2020.

8 The Third Space - Recruitment Opportunity

Third Space is a new cross border project delivered by Extern and Verbal. The project will transform the lives of 800 children and young people identified as being vulnerable and at risk.

Across key locations project leaders and creative professionals will be working with young people, opening them up to new opportunities by promoting self-esteem and resilience.

The project will help highly vulnerable young people from different communities, cultural and religious backgrounds to:

  • Reduce social isolation
  • Develop a deeper sense of community awareness
  • Successfully negotiate and manage a programme of personal development.

Foyle Hospice require a volunteer driver for patient transportation

DEEDS is based in the Old Library Trust in Creggan and works across the council area with five partners in Shantallow, Park, Strabane, Top of the Hill and Caw to provide social and activity groups in each area for those living with dementia. The programme supports people with dementia to live better within their own communities funded by the Big Lottery Community Fund.

14 Foyle Obon Festival: 18th - 25th May 2019

For the first time since our inception in 2014, Foyle Obon is expanding from a one day to a week long festival! A Japanese festival of taiko and light, this year sees a whole week of exciting cultural events and workshops, suitable for everyone.

There will be workshops taking place in various venues around Derry Londonderry in taiko drumming, origami, manga art, haiku poetry, Japanese food demos, film, Japanese doll making, a tea ceremony and our finale festival showcase event in the Playtrail on the evening of Saturday 25th, which ends the festival week with a beautiful lantern ceremony as the light fades.
