The closing date for completion is Monday 2 September at noon and we would encourage everyone to respond.
5 Save the date: Launch of Countering Incitement to Hatred Conference Report
Where: Moot Court Room, School of Law, Queen's University Belfast
When: Thursday 3 October 2019 @1pm
Speakers at this launch event will include former Justice Minister Claire Sugden MLA and Judge Marrinan, who is currently leading the Independent Review of Hate Crimes Legislation in Northern Ireland. There will also be input from academics and members of the Equality Coalition.
The event will centre on the launch of the official report from the joint Equality Coalition / QUB conference held in October 2017 entitled 'Defining public duties to tackle incitement to hatred whilst respecting free expression: reviewing the legal & policy framework'. This conference addressed the ‘threshold’ and ‘intervention’ questions increasingly defined in human rights law as to when public authorities can or must act against speech and cultural expression in order to protect the rights of others.
To register for the launch, please email events@caj.org.uk, stating any special requirements.
The event has been deliberately timed to coincide with the review of hate crime legislation, which was first announced by Justice Minister Claire Sugden in early 2017 and is now proceeding with Judge Marrinan at the helm. The review's terms of reference, which include consideration of ‘incitement to hatred’ offences, can be viewed at: http://www.hatecrimereviewni.org.uk/.

11 Emotional Intelligence Seminar in Slovenia - TWO Participants sought!
The Inside Out Programme is looking to recruit two participants for the following programme: Emotional Intelligence Training Course
This is the first of two inter-linked training courses, the second being held in Italy in April 2020. A commitment to both is necessary.
Tuesday 19th November (arrival day) - Tuesday 26th November (departure day) to be held in AJDOVŠČINA, Vipva Valley, Slovenia
The programme is being organised by Ambita Institute and Anatta Foundation.
Food and Accommodation is provided and a Travel Allowance of up to €275 is also available, all of which is funded by the Erasmus+ Programme. A Participation Fee of €50 applies.
Participants should be aged 18 and over and from the UK. As The Inside Out Programme is based in Northern Ireland and we target participants primarily (but not exclusively) from Northern Ireland.
We are looking to recruit two participants who are involved in delivery of youth work, that can be either young leaders (18-30), youth work practitioners or practitioners with a remit for young people who are all willing to actively and fully participate in the programme but are prepared to engage in post-programme activity including a local action project before returning to take part in the second training programme in April 2020.
You will be joined by participants from at 9 countries including Slovenia, Turkey, Portugal, Spain, Serbia, Italy and Ireland The programme will be in English.
Please note that you will be responsible for making your travel arrangements as a demonstration of your commitment to taking part but we can offer advice where necessary. You will be reimbursed up to a maximum of €275 for travel following completion of the programme.
The Programme: Emotional intelligence is something that is not genetically modified, but a quality that can be successfully trained and acquired. This training course offers personal development, but also several methods one can use in their professional life with young people.
These methods include cognitive activities, simulation exercises, theatrical and dance techniques, art techniques, aromatherapy, meditation and mindfulness, work in nature, etc.
The project is organised in two stages. First part of the project is aiming at gaining personal experiences and learning methods to be used in professional life as youth worker. At the end of the first training course, participants will prepare for local activities, which they should complete between the first and the second training course.
They will be offered support from the mentors during their local activities. It is important that the participants are present on the both training courses, because the programme of both training courses complement each other.
The second training course will continue with the practices and will offer space for reflection of the activities they made during both training courses.
Main topics of both training course will be:
· Self-awareness
· Recognition and handling emotions
· Recognition of other people’s emotions
· Creating our own values
· Proper communication
There will be one free afternoon to see some parts of Slovenia and a day for self reflection. Detailed programme and the application will be sent to participants in September, 2019, once recruitment is complete.
Second part of the training course will be held in April 2020 in Italy. Each participant will be asked to pay 50 EUR for the participation fee on both training courses. We will also arrange an insurance for each participant.

‘A soundscape composed with the original Keys of Crumlin Road Prison’
‘The sound recorded on this vinyl LP was created with items recovered from The Crumlin Road Prison Belfast. ‘The Crum’ as it is known, was a Belfast prison where prisoners involved in the conflict were held on remand. From the closed confines of a small prison cell, external sounds – keys, grills, locks, footsteps, voices, silence and random noise often provided a visual picture of what was happening beyond the locked door - the origin of this ‘sound sculpture’ - hopefully the vision that you will have as a listener, will be generated by you, your own confined space and your interaction with this sonic experience
‘This soundscape grew from an immersive audio visual installation that I created in 2017 and that I first exhibited in February 2018 in the Victoria and Albert Gallery and museum, Liverpool. That exhibition displayed hundreds of the Crumlin keys and their Identification tags combined with the immersive soundtrack created with those same keys.
‘Other items used to sculpt the sonic experience are a steel prison food tray, an original ‘prisoner made’ grappling hook (surreptitiously constructed by prisoners intending to escape),opening locks, banging grills, echoing memories and my own words. Additional instrumental music was created by my daughters Toraigh and Dara Watson, who play flute and harp, and the nature that blooms in the Glens. Whether they know it or not, both of my beautiful daughters have spent a lifetime collaborating with me on this ‘sound sculpture’ and on everything else that I have done and will do in the future.’

Void Gallery, Derry Preview Thursday, September 5th
Exhibition continues September 6th – November 1st, 2019
In all works of fiction there belies an agreement that the reader/the viewer will allow for a suspension of disbelief. In this exhibition I Am What You've Come To See, the artist Sonia Shiel has transformed the three gallery spaces into a circular narrative, casting the audience as its central protagonist. The viewer is compelled to move through the galleries by a series of scripted audio-visual instructions, strategic objects and obtuse props that feign seemingly ungovernable chances - in a shape- shifting journey that is entirely staged.
The use of text, stagings, props and painting are preoccupations in Shiel’s practice. These works are both performative and self-referential with the central narrative being an instructional conversation between the artwork and its maker. The paintings portray various landscape/natural elements and patterns, imprecise geometries, and translucent planes of colour and shape. Mimicking a digital landscape that encompasses both the archaeological and futuristic, the works have mobile components which, when activated, suggest how mysterious and magical qualities might influence the directions we take, even in the presence of intent.
Shiel’s expansive practice shifts us between the fantastical and the real and often refers to our impotency within world affairs while celebrating the notion of agency and our endeavours to affect change. Within this body of work she flips the hierarchy; the artworks assert control over the outcome and we become players within its stage.
