1 Reminder: T:BUC Uniting Communities: Uniting Opportunities
Uniting Opportunities is the small grants element of the Uniting Communities Programme. It aims to promote good relations and reconciliation through sport and creativity by addressing barriers to community participation that some young people face. It is targeted at the most vulnerable groups of young people in our society (aged 11-24), who would not normally avail of opportunities to participate.
The programme target groups are:
-
Young & Homeless
-
Young Refugees & Asylum Seekers
-
Young People in Care
-
Young People with a Disability
-
Young People with Poor Mental Health
-
Young Offenders
-
Young People at risk of rural isolation
The programme objectives are:
-
Young people who experience barriers to participation in their communities will have increased confidence, self-esteem and social skills to get involved
-
Young people have a greater awareness of good relations and an increased understanding of other religious, political, ethnic and marginalised communities
-
Young people are more actively involved in sport and creativity, and are presented with opportunities to sustain their involvement
-
Young people will have developed the appropriate attributes to enable further community engagement, including pathways to the Uniting Communities through sport and creativity programme
Uniting Opportunities has been designed to support our core Uniting Communities programme. As such, it only seeks projects from where our core programme is being delivered, or is scheduled to be delivered. Our current delivery areas are:
-
Ardoyne and Greater Ballysillan (North Belfast)
-
Fountain, Bogside and Bishop Street (Derry~Londonderry)
-
Ballymoney District Electoral Area (North Antrim)
-
Derg District Electoral Area (West Tyrone)
Uniting Opportunities 2019 to 2021 Information and Guidance Notes.
The Uniting Communities Team will also be available for support and guidance at a drop-in session in each the four delivery areas. If you unable to visit during one of these sessions (below) please feel free to contact us via telephone (02890 823 354) or email (tbuc@communities-ni.gov.uk).

12 Big Parenting Survey
Last year, we launched the first ever “Big Parenting Survey”. The results, from more than a 1000 parents across Northern Ireland provided an invaluable insight into the real lives of families. We learnt about the struggles, hopes and successes of parents from every end of the community.
That is why I am so pleased to tell you that the time has come again to launch the 2019 Big Survey. This year, we are looking at one of the most strikingly important findings from the previous year – the role and influence of technology on parenting.
Last year, we learned that:
-
Technology was the biggest challenge for parents and parenting;
-
Social media was seen as the second biggest;
-
Parents felt confused, left behind and worried about the impact of technology.
Nonetheless, we also heard stories of technology being a help and useful resource for parents. As such, we have decided to take a closer look into parent’s views on technology in addition to their parenting experiences generally.
THE LINK TO THE SURVEY IS HERE:
https://bps2019.questionpro.com
We would be delighted to assist you if there are any questions, issues or concerns. Do not hesitate to get in touch with Chris on 028 9031 0891 or chris@parentingni.org.

Candida Powell-Williams – Command Lines - Finissage
sonic arrangements in the infinite fill
Saturday 24th August
7pm
Walker Plinth, Derry City Walls
It is a new site-specific performance on the Derry Walls’ Walker Plinth by artist Candida Powell-Williams in collaboration with Echo Echo Dance Theatre. Sound, movement and costume will combine to explore the dualism of repelling and attracting, taking the transformation of the city walls from defensive architecture to tourist attraction as the starting point.
The dancers will take gestural direction from Powell-William’s first sound piece, synthesised from her ongoing series of ceramic bell idols. Like the walls, bells also repel and attract, worn to fend off evil spirits and simultaneously denote the time of worship therefore bringing people to them. Her bells are based on 7th-6th century BC goddess idols which signifying the forces of nature and the onward march of time. Inspired by the bell idol’s freely moveable legs, the dancers choreography is agile and powerful, taking advantage of all the potential manoeuvres of the spine and legs creating curves, spirals, twists, ripples, knotting together and pushing apart, their costumes inspired by amour and bell shaped forms.
The performance will finish on the Walker plinth which was the base for a neo classical column that once stretched up into the sky. Columns and bell towers are architectural forms designed to lift us up, to the passage between the worlds, to link us to the notion of what is beyond. The plinth’s now absent column, makes the space between land and the universe available to fill with a new ritual linking the body to the limitless sky.
Powell-William’s artistic practice often plays with the contested meaning of symbols. Her ongoing series of bell idols work with the duality of a figurative sculpture and a functional object and are part of a larger enquiry into conduits for practicing meditative rituals.
This event is free - just come along!
