2 Funding opportunity for Good Relations Week

Good Relations week is is a fantastic platform to showcase the good work that organisations in our City and district may be doing in the area of community relations and cultural awareness.

This year Good Relations week will from Monday 16^th to Sunday 22^nd September and the theme of the week is ‘People Making Change for Peace’ which focus on ordinary people who are actually pretty remarkable. They don’t live their lives in the spotlight with a desire to stand out, but are driven by quite the opposite: a desire to fulfill their peacebuilding passion, embracing the energy that building united communities together gives them.

Currently the Good Relations team have a funding opportunity to support groups to run an event during this week.  Events can include e.g. workshops, training events, launches, music events, showcases of work, public events, private events etc. that have a focus on good relations, cultural awareness, inclusion etc.

This week will also coincide with Culture Night which is taking place across the City and district on Friday 20^th September 19.

Possible funding up to £500.00

If your group is interested please completed the funding form with some detail of the proposed event, all proposals to be returned to Pauline O'Neill by 3.00pm on Friday 21^st June 19.

3  Invitation to explore opportunities within the new North-West Multimodal Transport Hub

About the Transport Hub 

The former Waterside Station site has been confirmed as the location for a new North-West Multimodal Transport Hub and is seen as a hugely significant strategic regeneration project for the region.

The project, which is led by the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) along with other partners including Translink, Derry City and Strabane District Council,  Sustrans and Donegal County Council,  will encourage a modal shift from car to public transport and other sustainable modes by providing integrated and convenient services to encourage more active travel for a healthier region.

Proposals include the restoration and refurbishment of the former listed Waterside Railway Station, new platforms, an enhanced Park and Ride facilities as well as an Active and Sustainable Travel Centre, demolition of the current train station, a new bus turning circle, Greenway link to the City Centre via the Peace Bridge as well as Track, Signaling and Telecoms works.

Derry City and Strabane District Council believes the North West Multimodal Transport Hub has the potential to completely regenerate the area around the current and former Waterside train stations, becoming a gateway that will significantly improve connectivity in the North West region.

4 Invite - Urgent and Emergency Care Summit meeting - 25 June 2019

The Department of Health are seeking service user and carer nominations to attend a Summit event to discuss: The Review of Urgent and Emergency Care across Northern Ireland on the 25th June 2019 at 9.30am, Mosley Mill, Antrim

Introduction

1. We want to make sure that the voices and experiences of service users and carers are listened to as we develop proposals for a new model of Urgent and Emergency in Northern Ireland. We will be engaging with service users and carers in a variety of ways throughout the review.

The event of the 25 June is an important opportunity to hear views from service users and carers and to engage in the discussions at a formative stage.

We wish to extend an invitation to 10 service users and/or carers to participate in the event.   

Project overview

1. Hospital emergency departments in NI have been experiencing intensifying pressures over recent years, with growing numbers of patients facing long waits at emergency departments for admission. We are also seeing a year on year rise in demand and complexity of conditions, particularly amongst the growing frail and elderly population. The Department of Health is currently undertaking a Review of Urgent and Emergency Care across NI.  https://www.health-ni.gov.uk/news/department-announces-review-urgent-and-emergency-care). The review aims to establish a new regional care model providing the best appropriate care for people of all ages, giving specific consideration to arrangements for the assessment and admission of older people. 
2. From February this year the review team has been undertaking a period of initial engagement across the HSC. The key purpose of this engagement has been to explain the background to the review; to seek initial views on key issues and challenges currently facing urgent and emergency care services, and to hear about work underway locally to help address these. The Department is holding an event on 25 June which will bring together strategic leaders and senior professionals and stakeholders from across the HSC and beyond to consider key messages and themes emerging from this period of initial engagement, and to begin to consider potential solutions that will inform a public consultation later this year on a new model of care. 

Role at the event 

Service users and carers who attend the event will have an opportunity to:

• Bring a service user or carer perspective to the discussion
• Hear about key messages and themes emerging from the review team’s period of initial engagement
• Input to early consideration of potential solutions that will inform the public consultation later this year
• Share lived experiences to help influence the development of proposals for a future regional model for urgent and emergency care
• Contribute to discussion of the key workstreams emerging as part of the view.

In Your Space Circus is proud to announce its fantastic upcoming youth street arts project. Thanks to Peace 4 Funding and Derry City and Strabane District Council we have sparked the exciting Take Back The Streets project, aligning with the council's Youth 19 campaign.

We have CIRCUS, we have DANCE, we have GRAFFITI, we have PARKOUR, and its all FREE.   

We're offering a 5-day Summer Academy for you to learn from the best in the business, and showcase your work at your very own festival.  

In Your Space Circus will be teaming up with Jump NI/The Playground, (Parkour), UV Arts (Graffiti) and dance company Create Dance to develop an amazing festival celebrating street art.  It is a completely free project for 12-24 year olds living in the Derry-Londonderry, Strabane and Donegal areas.  Grounded in good relations themes, and with young talent at its heart, the project will culminate in a Youth Street Art Festival bringing together all the street art disciplines for an awe inspiring Youth Street Arts Festival.

No previous experience required, the participants pick one discipline for the Academy week. They have to commit to:

• At least one advance workshop between now and July 
• A 5-day Summer Academy beginning 1st July 2019
• Participation in the Street Arts Festival on the 6th July 2019
• A follow-up session in September / October 2019

11  Monastic Ireland – A Gift of The Nile

The Mediterranean Influence on the Early Christian Church in Ireland

This June 9^th the Columba Community of Prayer and Reconciliation will host a talk by Alf Monaghan on the Mediterranean influence on the early Christian Church in Ireland.

Alf, from Carrick-on-Shannon, has spent most of his life abroad.  He has worked as an Economic Advisor in; Northern Europe, Central America, the Mediterranean and Africa.  He spent more than 10 years in the Middle East, living and working in Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, Cyprus, Jordan and Egypt.

Always interested in history, his time in Syria and Egypt, in particular, sparked off a deeper interest in early Christianity and the influence of the Eastern Mediterranean / North Africa on Irish Christianity - much of which is now ‘lost’ or ‘forgotten’.

Alf Monaghan’s illustrated talk looks at the history of early Irish Christianity from a different perspective - a Mediterranean perspective. It provides a tantalizing glimpse under the veil of history. It asks many questions and confounds some of the accepted theories about the history of early Christianity in Ireland. It traces links with ancient Egypt, connects Irish monasticism with the Desert Fathers and the early Irish Church with the Egyptian Coptic Church. Recent Irish discoveries such as the Faddan More Psalter - Egyptian papyrus found in an ancient book of psalms from a Tipperary bog - are clues pointing to a more substantial Eastern Mediterranean influence, than has been acknowledged to date.

Fr Neal Carlin of the Columba Community of Prayer and Reconciliation, “Alf Monaghan for me answers the question of how Christianity evolved into a monastic church which flourished all over Ireland from the late 5^th to the 12^th century. The answer is the North-African influence.’’

This fascinating subject will be of interest to anyone with an historical interest in the roots of the early Christian Church in Ireland, the Egyptian Coptic Church and the links between the two.

The talk will be held in St Canice’s Oratory at the IOSAS Centre and Celtic Prayer Garden, Lenamore Rd, Derryvane , Co Donegal on Sunday June 9^th at 7.30pm. Suggested donation €7.00. The talk will be followed by a Q&A with Alf for audience members.

Main Function

Under PEACE IV small grants scheme Churches Trust will be undertaking a community education programme and inter-church project, the aim of which is to bring together participants from various faith traditions and none, who will together explore our common Christian heritage and in particular explore Columba/ St Cholmcille and the associated relevance and heritage for this area. 

The project will involve a series of workshops, presentations, talks, interactive exercises and study visits and will create an opportunity for people to explore a common interest of Christian heritage and Columba.

• Objective Four: To develop and refine the draft evaluation framework, to measure and assess the impact of the Community Development Framework, to create a Northern Ireland evidence base which will inform future development.

The role
We are seeking an energetic and motivated individual to join our A6D2D Team, to work in a busy site office, the work will, involve meeting and greeting, answering the telephone/switchboard, sending/receiving emails, and general office duties. To create the  smooth running of a busy site office for staff, management and visitors.
 
Responsible for the day to day operation of the project’s documentation, including operating the Microsoft office suite (word, excel, power point etc.), meeting and greeting visitors, receiving deliveries and checking/logging delivery dockets, filing, diary management, and issuing receipts etc.  

• Carry out general office duties including photocopying, emailing answering phones, purchase ordering, and distributing documents as required.
• Maintain project files, hard-copy and digital by inputting and retrieving data, scanning, and indexing documents, including retrieval and storage.

• Routine correspondence (emails, letters, minutes, memos, spreadsheets, etc.) as required using Word and Excel within a document management system.

19  Invitation from the Department for Communities: PIP Information Events

The Department’s published response to the Independent Review of the Personal Independent Payment (PIP) Assessment process (Walter Rader report) included a commitment to coordinate a series of events to publicise the PIP Assessment process and purpose.

You are invited to attend one of our information events in partnership with Disability Action.

At each event the Department for Communities, Capita, Law Centre and Advice NI will talk through how to claim PIP, including the evidence required and the support that is available.
