  • Data Protection reform: Introduction to GDPR

Monday 12 March 2018
11am-1pm
The Junction, DiverseCity Community Partnership, Bishop St.

Have you heard about the reform to data protection law, which takes effect in 25 May 2018? Are you wondering what this means and how it might impact upon your organisation? Innovations in digital and communications technology have revolutionised the way in which data and information is created, stored, processed and shared.

The General Data Protection Regulation will build on the current data protection framework by providing more protections for consumers, and more privacy considerations for organisations. In this awareness raising session, NICVA staff will explore the key aspects of the GDPR in the format of what’s new, and what stays the same. Discover what your organisation can do to prepare for these changes through the impartation of information and group discussion.

This session is aimed at organisations who are at the initial stages of tackling GDPR.

**Please note this workshop is now fully booked**

2:00-4:00pm
Holywell DiverseCity Community Partnership

This free workshop facilitated by the Institute of Fundraising Northern Ireland and funded by the Halifax Foundation for NI will inform and educate on fundraising codes of best practice and self-regulation for any charity involved in fundraising.

The purpose of this project is to develop best practice standards and compliance with self-regulation in fundraising across the charity sector in Northern Ireland. This workshop will provide guidance and support to charities to understand implications of fundraising self regulation and grow best practice with trustees, staff and volunteers and essentially those who benefit from charity services such as supporters, donors and funders of charities.

Funded by the Halifax Foundation for Northern Ireland this is the first in a series of 6 workshops across Northern Ireland and offers charities the opportunity to understand the requirements for Fundraising Code compliance with regards to self-regulation of fundraising activity.

Speaking about the project, Chairperson of IOF NI, Neil Irwin said

"This is a great opportunity for charities right across Northern Ireland to raise their awareness in fundraising and regulation. Any groups involved in fundraising will become more aware of their responsibilities as regards fundraising and the requirements of the new funding regulations."

The workshop will use the Good Practice in Fundraising Guide (Northern Ireland) to support the development of self‐regulation in line with developing policy and practice in the rest of the UK"

Participants from all charities across Northern Ireland will get the chance to learn about developing their fundraising best practice and compliance with legal obligations as well as benefitting from being more aware of the legal and reputational risks to fundraising practice and understand better their responsibilities.

3   Stakeholder engagement events on the future Protect Life service announced

The Public Health Agency (PHA) is set to hold a number of stakeholder engagement events in the coming weeks throughout Northern Ireland. These will inform the future procurement of services to implement the pending ‘Protect Life 2’ suicide prevention strategy.

Séamus Mullen, Regional Lead for Mental and Emotional Wellbeing at the PHA, said:

“It is really important that people have their say and we would encourage as many as possible to register and come along to the planned workshops in their area.  This engagement will help provide a basis for what and how services should be designed and commissioned in order to help ensure that they meet local needs.  We hope to gather a wide range of views that will help shape what and how services should be commissioned in the future.”

Engagement events will take place across Northern Ireland and the PHA wants to gather the views and expertise of as many people and communities as possible, especially service providers, service users, family members and anyone with an interest in the area of suicide prevention.  People will also have the opportunity to input into discussions online at: Protect Life 2 Stakeholder Engagement Survey

Service models discussed at this stage of stakeholder engagement will only be taken forward to phase two when there is ministerial approval for the new strategy.

4 Why Bother Paying Tax

Children in Crossfire and Debt and Development Coalition Ireland invite you to

A FREE WORKSHOP AND A BITE TO EAT

FIND OUT HOW BIG CORPORATE POWERS HIDE THEIR MONEY TO AVOID PAYING TAX, AND HOW THIS CONTRIBUTES DIRECTLY TO MAINTAINING A CYCLE OF GLOBAL POVERTY AND INJUSTICE

When: Wednesday 14th March from 6pm to 9pm

Where: St Columb's Park House, Derry.

Food will be provided from 6pm, with the workshop kicking off at 6.45pm. There will be performance pieces throughout by local artists - Bebeedeebe

To sign up please fill out the following survey:  https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/3WT7K2G

The global cost of tax dodging is estimated to be $500 billion a year, and $200 billion of that comes from developing countries - more than they receive in development aid. The impact of these tax practices is that governments have less tax income to provide public services, affecting communities throughout the world. Less tax means less healthcare, less infrastructure, less money to pay for teachers, doctors and nurses. At the same scandals like the Panama and Paradise Papers expose those dodging their tax bill yet nothing seems to change.

Join us for a workshop to demystify tax justice and explore how these practices continue to happen, and what action we can take for change!

5 Focus Group - Older People Keeping Cash at Home

When – Thursday 29th March 2018

Where - City Hotel, Derry

Registration and refreshments - 10.30-11am

Finish 12.30 followed by lunch until 1pm

The Commissioner for Older People for Northern Ireland is keen to better understand the reasons why some older people keep cash and other funds at home rather than in a bank or financial institution.

The Commissioner is holding a focus group for all older people and the organisations who work with them, to better understand the reasons behind this. The Commissioner will discuss his priorities for his term including crime and scams, followed by a discussion to give participants a chance to give their opinion on why older people keep their cash at home.

COPNI will not attribute any viewpoints to an individual but will discuss overall findings from the focus group and this will help to inform work going forward. COPNI will also ask that individuals do not asked to disclose if they personally keep money at home, for security reasons. The purpose of the discussion will simply be to ask participants of any reasons that they are aware of as to why older people keep funds at home.

Please note as numbers are limited, places are on a first come first served basis.
Please RSVP to myself, Rebecca Kelly on

16  "The Friends of the Derry Walls" History Lecture

On Thursday 8th March, 7pm, The Friend’s of The Derry Walls have organised another history and heritage talk in The Playhouse as part of this endeavour to  unpack the story of the building of the Derry Walls and their enduring legacy, both physically and culturally.  In a talk entitled, Mapping the Plantation City, Dr Annaleigh Margey, Lecturer in History at Dundalk Institute of Technology will discuss the place of the walls in landscape and in perception with a particular focus on the livery company maps of the Londonderry Plantation. While to modern viewers, they appear as basic drawings with little by way of modern cartographic expectation, the maps became fundamental tools in the development and shaping of plantation landscapes in the city and county.

The event is free but the  organisers would be grateful if everyone attending could book their  place in advance on www.thederrywalls.com/events

17 Services with Deafblind UK

We are a national charity founded in 1928 we offer tailored support, information and advice to people living with both a vision and hearing impairment, at any level, we have  projects across England, NI and Wales and we are keen to reach out to more people who have a dual sensory loss.

When some people hear the name of our charity they automatically think about the profoundly deaf and blind. However, what most people don’t realise is that, according to the Department of Health, they are deafblind if their combined sight and hearing loss cause difficulties with communication, access to information and mobility. Which means there are thousands and thousands more people who could be accessing our FREE services but don’t realise we are here for them.

The types of service we can offer:

  • An information and Advice Line provides members with emotional support and practical advice on a wide variety of topics, such as giving people who have acquired the disability tips on helping family and friends use different ways of communicating with them.
  • We make outbound calls to members, Send out birthday and Christmas Cards.
  • Volunteer befrienders provide companionship and light touch support at home that enables members to do everyday things such as shopping, going for walks, meeting friends.
  • A quarterly members’ magazine (Open Hand) in accessible formats keeps members informed and involved.
  • Awareness talks to staff, carers and family members around deafblindness, useful tips. We also offer training around communication and guiding.

Salmonberry is an American woody shrub with a small pink flower, similar to that of the wild raspberry. Over time the salmonberry plant will spread through the woodland and eventually choke out areas for tree re-generation and the beautiful bluebells we come to know so well about Prehen Wood.

Management involves burning the debris so there will hopefully be a chance to have some baked potatoes on the fire to keep us going!

22  Lives in Translation

Lives in Translation celebrates the human survival instinct through the story of one woman, Asha, who in fleeing the conflict of her home becomes trapped in a different struggle. She is trapped within the suffocating bureaucracy surrounding asylum seeking.

Based on interviews with female Somali asylum seekers and local support workers, this poignant drama explores how asylum seekers are forced to navigate support systems through translation. It highlights how disempowering and frustrating this system can be, and ultimately how time is controlled most by those it affects least.

The performance follows a ten-year journey through Mogadishu, Dublin, Belfast and London, as one woman fights for a life free from constant fear and a place to make home.

Suitable for 15 years and older.

“This simple but powerful drama explores the asylum industry, where the future is determined by interpreters, and hope is dashed in transit” – Belfast Telegraph

“Lives in Translation is sharp and an international look at the appalling situation of those asylum seeking” – Irish News
