Do you want to learn more about social innovation? What it is and how you can use it to improve what you do and how you do it? NICVA are running a further round of 11 workshops throughout Northern Ireland in the last quarter of 2017.
Simply put, social innovation is finding new and innovative solutions to existing social problems. These solutions can take the form of new products, services, models, markets or processes. Crucially, social innovation seeks not only to resolve the immediate social problem but also enhances society’s capacity to act in future.
Now in its second year, this initiative of the Building Change Trust, Social Innovation NI, is a cross-sectoral collaboration of organisations who want to see innovation at the heart of solving social problems in Northern Ireland. These are:
The Building Change Trust (overall coordination)
NICVA (Social Innovation Workshops)
Work West (Social Innovation Skills Programme – lead)
Enterprise North West (Social Innovation Skills Programme)
Innovate NI (Techies in Residence)
The term ‘Social Innovation’ can be alienating to many people and with these workshops NICVA will hope to demystify the concept showing participants how social innovation is really something anyone can try. You will hear from participants on the first year of the programme, many of whom accessed seed funding to bring their idea and concept to the next stage.
There will also be an opportunity to try out one of the key methods involved in social innovation – Design Thinking – so groups and organisations can see for themselves whether it can help them find new solutions to whatever societal challenges they are passionate about. ‘Design thinking’ is a creative approach to problem solving that starts with the people you’re designing for and ends with new solutions that are tailor made to suit their needs.
We foresee this as the first step on the Social Innovation NI journey with groups and organisations going on to participate in our other Support Projects, but we believe it is equally as worthwhile for those who are just hoping to learn more about Social Innovation, and take those lessons into their own work.
Dates of the workshops are below, click on the links to book a place: 19th October, Playhouse, Derry, Derry & Strabane
23rd November, Strabane Enterprise Agency, Derry & Strabane
All seminars will be scheduled for 10.00am - 1.00pm with the exception of Belfast and Derry which will be 3.00pm - 4.30pm

20 Complementary Therapy Classes at Focus on Family
New Therapy Classes starting Tuesday 19th September 6.30pm-8.30pm and running every Tuesday evening. To register, please contact Catherine on 0779 313 1094.
Focus on Family has been running holistic therapy classes for some years now which have proved to be a big hit with people of all ages and from all walks of life. The classes include Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, Massage, Facial massage with Lymphatic Drainage and Aromatherapy.
Catherine, our fully qualified tutor supervises each class and says people are gaining great benefit from the experience because participants are not only learning about each treatment but also how receiving the treatment has enhanced their mental and physical health in many ways. Catherine said over the years she has found the best way for everyone to enjoy and get the most from the class, is by her talking through each movement step by step without the stress of participants trying to remember all the techniques. There is no pressure at all, indeed some ladies enjoy the classes so much they return season after season and sign up for the next course.
The classes cover all age groups for ladies who want time away from every day routines. It also brings people together who in their spare time want to be doing something positive with their evenings. Some people may even be lonely and want to be in the company of others. Senior citizens find it very interesting learning something new that will enhance their health and wellbeing.
The classes are held in a very relaxed comfortable atmosphere, everyone is very friendly, and in no time they feel they have known each other for years. There is no pressure at all to learn, most come to relax and have time out for themselves, but most of all it’s to enjoy a treatment at an extremely low price, £3 per two-hour class.
The Reflexology class which has been running for the past ten weeks is coming to an end shortly. Everyone said they will miss it very much when this season comes to an end as it has converted boring everyday tasks into quality time that everyone looks forward to each week. They can’t wait for the next one to start in September.
22Building Sustainable Communities - How Cloughmills Shares
Sun 17th Sept 2017
11.30am - 12.30pm
The Amphitheatre
Enough Stuff Festival
The Playtrail
Racecourse Rd Derry
Declan Donnelly, Recycling and Education Officer with Causeway Coast and Glens Council will tell the inspirational story of Incredible Edible Cloughmills. In this county Antrim village, the council and the community sectors have been working together in innovative ways to involve as many people as possible, all ages, all abilities, in building a sustainable community. There is a community vegetable garden and box delivery scheme; there are beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces for community activities and enjoyment; there is a community food fridge and plans for a tools lending library. Declan will explain the sharing ethos underpinning the work. He is also offering to develop connections made at the talk with ongoing support in building other sharing, sustainable communities.
This talk is highly recommended for anyone interested in how we live and work together and how we look after ourselves and each other.
Once upon a time, two fair maidens dragged fairy tales kicking and screaming into the 21st century in this sharp and original review of all things “happily ever after”. Follow the trail of breadcrumbs to see your favourite bedtime stories poked with a big stick before being tossed into a cauldron with physical comedy and biting wit. Sample the results. They may not taste as sweet as you remember.
Following their sold out show at the Belfast comedy Festival 2016 and recent successful run at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2017, Sorcha Shanahan and Gemma Walker are excited to premiere their topical, hilarious and strikingly different show in their home town.
