1  Unscheduled Care in Western Trust area - Your experience, views and suggestions

Can you spare 15 minutes of your valuable time to answer eight straightforward questions about Unscheduled Care in this part of the Western Health & Social Care Trust area?

If so please click here to begin this anonymous survey.

North West Community Network has been commissioned by the Western Local Commissioning Group (LCG) to conduct Community Engagement around the area of Unscheduled Care.

Unscheduled Care basically refers to when someone accesses health and social care services unexpectedly.  This can occur at any time and crosses the traditional boundaries between general practitioner (GP), community and hospital services and means there must be a 24 hour service available.

Across the Western Trust area, over 1000 surveys will be completed by the end of March 2017 and then analysed to determine what changes or priorities need to be considered in the shaping and commissioning of future services.

You can decide to complete the survey yourself, share it with friends and family, colleagues and service users.  The value and analysis of responses will be greatly improved if you can include answers on Age, Gender and Post Code so you are kindly asked to record these.

Your can complete this survey electronically here or, if more convenient, print and complete by hand.  It is also available on the Network's website -  www.nwcn.org

5 Prestigious Award to Recognise Voluntary Effort

Are you a volunteer group that deserves recognition for your outstanding work or would you like to nominate another group to receive an award?

The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service is the highest Award given to volunteer groups - the equivalent to an MBE.  It is for groups of volunteers who together make a real difference - previous winners say the Award has raised their profile, made them feel valued and inspired them to keep volunteering - so it is well worth considering!  The winners are announced during Volunteers’ Week every year and they receive a domed glass crystal and a certificate signed by the Queen.

Groups cannot nominate themselves for the Award – someone not directly involved in the group needs to do that. It could be someone who has benefited from the group, a funder, a local community leader or statutory representative. The group and a nominator can work together to complete a nomination - the process is easy! Nominations are open for the Award at any time (https://qavs.direct.gov.uk/), there is no deadline.

Rural Community Network are hosting an information briefing on 7th February 2017, 7pm – 8.30pm in RCN, 38A Oldtown St, Cookstown BT80 8EF, to let you hear how you can nominate, or be nominated, for this prestigious Award. The session is aimed at potential nominators and interested groups and will go through the process.  Additionally if you decide to submit a nomination, you can get one to one support (meeting slots available from January – March 2017) from Volunteer Now to help submit a high quality nomination.

Volunteering is at the heart of rural communities; why not raise its profile and achieve recognition for the difference that volunteers make. Come and hear more, please confirm your attendance by contacting Teresa McKernan in RCN on  02886766670 or email teresa@ruralcommunitynetwork.org before 5.00pm on Wednesday 1st February 2017.

This is an opportunity to meet with people engaged in supporting the Awards across NI and would be very beneficial for Networking Organisations to hear how local groups and volunteers can be recognised for their work.

We look forward to seeing you on the night!

6 Volunteering opportunities with Alzheimer’s Society Foyle

We have a number of volunteering opportunities within the Foyle area.  Why not volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Society today!

Regional fundraising is at the very centre of how we raise vital funds at a local level.  We are recruiting Fundraising Events volunteers who will provide support to fundraisers in your area.  It’s a flexible role and could be anything from being a route marshal to taking part in a bucket collection.

Both these roles are crucial to the success of the Regional Fundraising team as we couldn’t hold our events without you!

Love reading? Volunteer with Reading Rooms from the Verbal Arts Centre and share your love of reading with young people throughout our community.

Reading Rooms is a programme from the Verbal Arts Centre in Derry/Londonderry that uses a shared reading model to encourage participation in discussion and  the sharing of insights and experiences that emerge from reading contemporary and classic literature. Reading Rooms work with a wide range of groups in the community including older people, young people at risk or in care, people within the criminal justice system and people living with life changing physical and mental health conditions. There are two projects, one is working  with children at risk and the other is working with young offenders in a community-based setting. Current opportunities are within the Derry/Londonderry area. We offer our volunteers free OCN accredited training in Facilitation Skills for Shared Reading (Level 2) and a free background check through Access NI. 12 Questionnaire for Derry & Strabane Village Renewal Scoping Study

Background - Village Renewal Scoping Study & Animation for Rural Development

JUNO Planning (in consultation with others) is undertaking a ‘Village Renewal Scoping Study & Animation for Rural Development’ on behalf of Derry and Strabane District Council and the Rural Partnership. On the 27th of October 2016, an event was held to introduce and receive initial feedback on the Village Renewal Scheme.  The project team received some information on village renewal projects within the study area at the consultation event and, subsequently we issued a questionnaire to community groups in early November 2016. We are hoping for further feedback to our consultation from the responses received in November 2016 so we are re-issuing the questionnaire  to avail of your insight on village renewal projects in your area [as a necessary element for our evidence base].  A key element of the Village Renewal Scheme is a call for strategic village projects addressing the areas of:

1) Derelict and Vacant Site Enhancement;
2) Environmental Improvements;
3) Shop Frontage Enhancements;
4) Conservation and Upgrading of Rural Culture and Heritage (natural and built, except monuments and wall murals which will not be considered eligible for funding
5) Gateway Projects

As the future model of development and funding, the Council and Partnership presented the idea of the development of clusters/hubs in the study area. In this approach, settlements/villages build on joint assets that are present within the Council Area (e.g. environmental features, built/environmental heritage features, etc, regional history, etc.) as a way to cohesively develop individual villages/settlements.

Feedback Request
With this in mind, the Council and Rural Partnership are looking to gain your feedback on:

Village renewal projects that have worked well in your Village or wider area,
current projects in your Village and
current collaborations (with neighbouring villages) that are taking place, or  indeed proposed in your area in regarding Village Renewal.

We look forward to hearing from you and would appreciate if you could provide feedback in the form of a completed Questionnaire (available at www.nwcn.org under Useful Downloads) by Monday 6th February to Orlaith.Kirk@junoplanning.com.  For any further questions or emails please call Orlaith Kirk or Evan Whetsell at Juno Planning & Environmental Ltd on 028-90681918.

RNIB Northern Ireland: Looking Forward Project Confidence Building Programmes

The Royal National Institute of Blind People in Northern Ireland (RNIB NI) is delighted to be running a series of confidence building programmes tailored for people aged 60 plus and living with sight loss. The aims of each programme are to provide support and information as well as bringing people together with their peers to share their sight loss journey and reduce social isolation.

The six day Living with Sight Loss course and three day residential Finding Your Feet Programme have been established through the Looking Forward Project which is funded by the Big Lottery and provides practical and emotional support to people with sight loss at greatest risk of isolation or exclusion.

A range of different themes are covered during each programme which include mobility and daily living, emotional support and wellbeing, assistive technology, eye health, peer support and leisure time. Each programme is a combination of facilitated sessions and talks from RNIB staff and delivery partners about what help and support is available and how it can be accessed.

We believe that this joint led and local approach helps to ensure that attendees leave the course with increased confidence and awareness of what support is available and how they can access it.

Each programme is free to access and partners, family and friends are also invited to participate. If you are interested in attending a course in your area, please contact Richard Craig, Living with Sight Loss Facilitator, Looking Forward Project on 028 9033 4144 or email richard.craig@rnib.org.uk

TIME:         11.00am - 12.30pm (including lunch)

FWIN are delighted to invite you to launch of 'Softly Spoken' - a book about the untold stories of women during the Troubles.

With this book we wanted to capture what life was like for women during the conflict, many of whom have suffered in silence for years.

"This book is the culmination of months of hard work by FWIN, funded throughThe Executive Office, putting together a unique and insightful book that will be a valuable resource to anyone with an interest in our shared history."

The book launch will be followed by FWIN's Annual General Meeting.
