"The Muslim community in the city is going to mark the arrival of the month of fasting (Ramadan), with an open day at the North West Islamic Centre (8 Hyde Business Park, Pennyburn Industrial Estate, BT48 0LU), on Sunday 13th May 2018 between 1-5pm.

In the spirit of friendship and conversation, we hope to give members of the local community an engaging insight into the life of the Muslim community and to promote greater understanding of Islam. We anticipate welcoming local people from all walks of life to visit the centre and meet with its diverse Muslim members. Last year, the Tea and Tour open day event has attracted more than 200 local people to visit the centre.

The open attitude of the Islamic centre and its people hope to make a major contribution in fostering interfaith and intercultural understanding within the city.

During the course of the afternoon visitors will be given the opportunity to talk with members of the Muslim community, observe their religious practices (including live mid-day prayer at 2:00pm), receive some information through an exhibition about Islam, and get the chance to ask questions at the "Ask A Muslim Q & A" session (at 4:00 pm). In addition to this, we will have a Hijab and Henna desk, Arabic Calligraphy and provide some local and ethnic snacks with tea.

We would be honored to have your presence on the day at our Islamic centre.

“Over a decade ago a blueprint for this was published.  Foundations for the Future was a report written by former Friends of the Earth Director, Tom Burke, and the then Environmental Law Professor at QUB, Sharon Turner.  If its recommendations had been implemented, we would have had the strongest environmental protection agency in the UK or Ireland.

17 Budding volunteers required for wild flower survey

Volunteers are being sought to monitor wild flower and plant populations across Northern Ireland.

The National Plant Monitoring Scheme is an important UK-wide survey to assess habitats and ecosystems, as well as species and diversity.

Lorna Somerville from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) explained: “Thanks to volunteers, we have a very good understanding of changes in the populations of birds, butterflies and bats. However, plants are the foundation of habitats and ecosystems, yet currently we do not have a good measure of changes in plant populations across the country.

“We’re hoping to change this, and are seeking volunteers to help create a detailed record of wild flowers and plants across Northern Ireland.”

The survey – which takes place from April to September – will look at specific areas across the country.

Lorna added: “Across Northern Ireland, a total of 115 squares, measuring one kilometre by one kilometre, have been randomly selected. These represent all types of terrain and habitats. We’re asking for volunteers to select a square near them to monitor. If there are currently no suitable squares, you can register on the website and get notified when a square becomes available in your area.

“Volunteers will be provided with a survey pack. This will include a list of common species found in each habitat and an easy to use species identification guide, based on flower colour.

“You don’t have to be a botanist to volunteer,” Lorna explained. “Other than being able to cover the ground, no special skills are required. All the information you need will be provided and you will be guided through the process.

“Once surveyed, this information will give us a detailed picture of a key aspect of our flora. This is a real chance to make a difference and help the nationwide effort to catalogue our natural resources.”

For more information, to find out which squares are available near you, or to sign up as a volunteer, log on to the National Plant Monitoring Scheme website at: http://www.npms.org.uk.
