4DAERA Launches NI Rural Social Enterprise Investment Scheme
A £500,000 capital grant scheme to help established rural social enterprises in Northern Ireland to increase their capacity, potential profitability and sustainability has opened for Expressions of Interest.
The Rural Social Enterprise Investment Scheme is a pilot scheme, provided and administered by the Northern Ireland Executive's Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA). Applications will be accepted from established, rural social enterprises who have been trading for more than two years, delivering projects located in rural areas of Northern Ireland. For the purposes of this scheme, 'rural' is defined as all those areas outside the statutory development limits of those towns with a population in excess of 5,000 inhabitants.
The focus of the scheme is primarily on capital works. Eligible projects and activities should align with the following funding priorities:
Improving the sustainability of your rural social enterprise - to encourage a transition to more sustainable rural social enterprises through enabling the business to increase its capacity, potential profitability and sustainability.
Strengthening rural community/communities - investing in social enterprises which create products and services for and on behalf of rural communities, thereby helping to create a sustainable rural community where people want to live, work, to visit and invest in.
Improving the economic circumstances of rural communities - enabling and supporting employment pathways, training and volunteering opportunities to assist disadvantaged or vulnerable rural people to fulfil their potential.
Working in partnership with others - proactively encourage new or enhanced partnership arrangements to connect individuals, communities and opportunities in rural areas.
Grants of between £50,000 to £100,000 are available, to fund up to 80% of eligible project costs. The deadline for Expressions of Interest is 3pm on 14 November 2022.

8Activism to end VAWG in NI: Learning from the lives of ten women
As part of a doctoral research project, Kate Mukungu carried out 10 life history interviews with activists from NI that have taken a stance on VAWG – violence against women and girls. These 2016 interviews were part of a study across two sites, Namibia and Northern Ireland, which sought to understand how women activists develop relations across division in post-conflict societies. Now the study is concluded, Kate will deliver a feedback session on three key themes that emerged in the study. These are:
the lingering challenges of addressing gendered violence by conflict actors within communities
the immediate and long-term benefits of women of different ages carrying out activism together
the power of solidarity in activism relationships and the strategies women use to keep activism progressing when solidarity is under strain

9Focus Group for the Review of Community Development National Standards
This invite is for you to take part in a Focus Group for community development organisations in NI, as part of the consultation on the review of the Community Development National Occupational Standards (2015).
The Community Development Standards clearly define the purpose of community development, the underpinning values and the key areas of practice. The also specify the standards of performance expected of individuals in the workplace, together with the knowledge and understanding required for community work roles.
NOS are used for a variety of purposes including developing job descriptions and person specifications for CD roles, structuring support and supervision, planning and designing training and development, qualifications design (inc. CD degree programmes), career planning and progression, strategic and programme planning within organisations.
The Community Learning and Development Standards Council Scotland (CLDSC) has been granted a contract to carry out a review of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Community Development across the United Kingdom and will be working with a range of national and local organisations from Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

The ‘Truth, Acknowledgement and Accountability’ report published in October 2021 recommended the establishment on an Integrated Truth Investigation, comprising an expert Independent Panel and a Statutory Public Inquiry, to investigate Mother and Baby Institutions, Magdalene Laundries and Workhouses in Northern Ireland.
The Independent Panel will be made up of experts from the following disciplinary areas:
Sociology of discrimination and gender-based violence;
International human rights law and domestic law;
Social and oral history;
Trauma-informed practice;
Genealogy; and
Archiving.
The Panel will also include victims/survivors’ representatives.
In recognition of the different roles, the Executive Office is running two separate competitions for members of the Independent Panel. There will be a competition to appoint the Chair and Expert members and a separate, but parallel, competition to appoint the Victim-Survivor representatives.

Stranmillis University College was founded as a non-denominational institution in 1922 to provide state-funded teacher training alongside that already available at the existing St Mary’s College. Both institutions have since become academically recognised as University Colleges of the Queen’s University of Belfast.
A background in education or specific academic qualifications are not required.
