1 Pilot Grant Programme to support inter-community practice & activism in Northern Ireland
St Stephen’s Green Trust has supported organisations working on issues of social justice in Ireland, North and South, over the past 25yrs. It believes that the strengthening of collaborative and supportive relationships within and between communities is essential for peace-building. As part of its commitment to peace-building in Northern Ireland, it wishes to implement a 2-year pilot grant programme supporting work that will have the following outcomes:
People working collaboratively on an inclusive and inter-community basis to address common issues and
Identifying barriers to inclusive work, and relationship-building, within and between communities and learning how these can be overcome.
In this pilot phase we are looking for applications that focus on:
Supporting work that helps build confidence, relationships and effective activism amongst women and women’s groups; and/or young people and youth groups; and/or people involved in place-based activism.
Groups that can demonstrate openness to working in an inclusive manner, within and between their communities, based on their activities and experience to date.
How work undertaken by a cluster of groups working with women, young people and place-based might be further developed with grant support.
SSGT aims to be flexible in the type of inter-community work which might be supported but groups will need to clearly state why they believe their proposed programme of work will result in the outcomes sought by the grant programme. The overall grants available will be a maximum of £26,000 paid over a two year period (with Year 2 payments being subject to a report on Year 1 outcomes). Applications for smaller grant amounts are also welcome. We will prioritise work which cannot be funded from other sources. As part of the programme, grantees will be required to participate in a learning network of the funded groups in order to share learning and reflection, both with each other and with the St. Stephen’s Green Trust. This will involve two half-day meetings a year.
There is a two-step process to apply for funding. Step 1: the Expression of Interest form should be filled out and sent to SSGT by email or post by Friday 26th May 2017. Short-listing will be carried out on the basis of the Expressions of Interest by Friday, 23rd June 2017 and you will be notified of the outcome. Step 2: If the Expression of Interest is shortlisted you will be required to submit a more detailed application which may involve meeting with us.

The Holywell STEW project offers a different way to spend an evening. For a small fee (£10) you will be served a nice meal and help to decide which projects receive a micro grant to support the people of this city.
Over 3 community dinner events 12 projects will pitch for support and the people at the dinners will vote on the projects to receive the support. This isn’t a ‘Dragon’s Den’ approach, we’re a much friendlier bunch.
Every organisation that takes part in the programme will receive support and training on preparing and delivering their pitch. It will be up to you to vote for the project you most like the look of.
This project is about local people helping each other. The available funds are the resources collected at the door.

What are Development Awards?
Development Awards are grants of up to £500 to help young people who are struggling to access education, work or training due to a lack of funds. Please note that the average award is £200 and it is not possible to support every young person with a £500 grant.
Development Awards can be used to help with:
Equipment for a course, job or work placement (e.g. hairdressing equipment, joinery tools, books)
Course Fees
Industry specific qualifications e.g. SIA License, Forklift License, CSR Card
Workwear for a course, job or work placement (e.g. interview clothing, uniforms for college placements, mechanics clothing)
Travel to a course or placement
Eligibility
In order to be eligible for a development award, young people should be aged 16 – 30 and unemployed, or working less than 16 hours. If they are in education, this should be less than 14 hours per week. Please note that applications can only be made for new courses the applicant intends to start.
Please note that we cannot fund everyday living costs, courses at Level 4 or above, or any costs that are the responsibility of a statutory provider.

4 Change Your Mind Partnership Small Grants (NI) - Deadline Imminent
Funding is available for groups in Northern Ireland that are working to end the stigma of mental health.
The Change Your Mind partnership, a unique partnership between Comic Relief, Niamh and the Public Health Agency, is offering small grants to not-for-profit voluntary and community organisations in Northern Ireland for projects which affect positive change in attitudes and behaviours about mental health and improve the wellbeing of anyone who is experiencing mental health issues.
Two levels of grants are available to organisations:
Award One – Grants of up to £500.
Award Two – Grants of between £501 and £1,000.
The funding is for projects which:
Meet the following themes:
Creating meaningful conversations about mental health and mental health stigma.
Reducing stigma (both self-stigma and external stigma).
Making positive connections with friends, family and colleagues.
Encouraging people to seek help if they feel the weight of stigma.
Raising awareness of the negative impact of stigma.
Demonstrate community involvement including how the need for the project was identified at community level and how this specific issue is being addressed.
Have realistic and achievable aims, objectives and outputs.
Contribute to models of good practice and evidence of effectiveness.
Clearly outline how the project will be monitored and evaluated.
Demonstrate value for money
Reasonableness of costs.
Examples of eligible expenditure include training and awareness events, transport to local facilities, venue hire and facilitators. Existing staff costs may be considered where the work undertaken is in addition to current duties and where monies are not currently being received from another funder for the provision of same.
The deadline for applications is 19 May 2017 (5pm).

6Programme For Women Involved In Community Transformation
The Department for Communities (DfC) will be facilitating a series of stakeholder engagement events to seek views on the development of a programme providing support for women wishing to be involved in community transformation. This engagement process is being undertaken as part of the Department’s contribution to the Fresh Start initiative and to the delivery of the Executive’s Action Plan – Tackling Paramilitarism, Criminality and Organised Crime.
A series of engagement sessions have been arranged to gather your views about the programme’s proposed content which is designed to:
Be supportive and enhance the ability of the women participants to work in their communities by making new connections to community and voluntary sector groups and also through community action.
Support the creation of influential relationships for women that build participation in our political structures and grow civic leadership from the neighbourhood level upwards.

7Institute of Fundraising Introductory Certificate for Fundraisers
Thursday 15th June 10:00am-4:00pm: £10 (Lunch included) in Rural Community Network’s Premises.
The Northern Ireland Environment Link and Institute of Fundraising Northern Ireland in association with Rural Community Network is providing its popular one day training course the Introductory Certificate of Fundraising.
The course is substantially funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Catalyst Umbrella Programme and IOF Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland Environment Link delivers the programme through its “Investing in Northern Ireland’s Heritage” project.
There will be an Institute of Fundraising NI trainer that will deliver the course which is particularly relevant for anyone new to funding or fundraising within their own group or organisation.
There is a fee of only £10 per person – reduced from £75 or the opportunity when booking to upgrade to the Accredited Course and Membership of the Institute of Fundraising for an extra £40 subject to availability. It would normally cost £200+ to complete the introductory certificate and receive annual membership of IOF.
Furthermore, participant attendees and groups will have an opportunity for a free “one-to-one” consultation with an IOF member to offer fundraising advice and information that is specific for their project/organisation at a later date.

Drink Wise, Age Well Project ‘Helping people make healthier choices about alcohol as they age’
The Drink Wise, Age Well Project is a BIG Lottery funded programme which aims to influence and inform policy and practice in preventing alcohol misuse amongst adults aged 50 and over.
As part of our Prevention and Campaigning work, we are delivering community-based alcohol awareness and education sessions to over 50’s groups. Sessions usually last around 1 hour and can be tailored to meet the needs of the group
In addition, we offer ongoing 1 to 1 support to individuals who have been identified as experiencing problematic alcohol use through our Direct Engagement & Support Team. Sessions will be delivered at client’s homes or in community venues. We also offer support to family members whom are affected by a loved one’s drinking.
We also offer a 6-week community-based Resilience Programme as well as Training Programme for anyone who offers support to someone over 50 such as a peer, volunteer, carer or loved one.

Domestic Abuse Awareness & How to Ask the Questions

Dr. Tony Humphreys
Dr. Tony Humphreys is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Author and National and International Speaker.
He began his career as a Clinical Psychologist in State Psychiatric and Psychological Services in England and Ireland and since 1990 has been working in private practice in Ireland.
He works with individuals, couples, families, schools, local communities and the business community. He is the Director of two National University of Ireland courses which are run in University College Cork and in an outreach centre in Dublin.
Dr Kay Inckle
Kay Inckle specialises in the sociology of health and medicine at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
She previously spent a number of years working as a practitioner, and later a practitioner trainer, across the health and social care sector, working with adults and young people.
Conor McCafferty MSc., Reg. MBACP (Accred)
Conor comes from a background of Youth Work, Further Education and Counselling & Psychotherapy. He is an accredited psychotherapist with BACP and specialises in self-harm and suicidal behaviours as well as addiction.
Conor has been with Zest for 18 years and currently coordinates the Self-harm Intervention Programme (SHIP) in the WHSCT and the NHSCT. This is a direct referral pathway from the Community Mental Health Teams to counselling in the Voluntary Sector for those who are self-harming.
Conor specialises in the impact of alcohol on self-harm and suicide and delivers training workshops to professionals throughout the province. Conor is responsible for the business side of Zest and also develops and delivers the training programmes.
Conor was appointed to the Chair of the Suicide Strategy Implementation Body (SSIB) in December 2014 by the Minister of Health Jim Wells for a 3 year period.
Teresa Carbery
Teresa is a qualified counsellor who has personal and professional experience in the area of Self-Harm, Suicide and Trauma.
Main purpose of job: To provide administrative and financial reporting support to the Strategy Manager the Board of Waterside Neighbourhood Partnership.

Administration
1. To answer the telephone in a welcoming, enthusiastic and sensitive manner.
2. To carry out general administrative duties which include producing letters, recording out going mail, assist in producing reports.
3. To open and record all incoming correspondence and distribute to the relevant personnel or department

As part of The Playhouse’s 25th Anniversary Joe Mahon, Ken McCormack and Brian Lacey present a very special night looking at the history and the legacy of the city.
Is the Derry we all know and love vanishing before our eyes? On Thursday 10 May at 8:00pm, The Playhouse will attempt to answer the question in a light-hearted evening of stories, memories, music and rare scenes from photographic archives. Three well-known commentators on Derry will take to the stage to paint pictures of the Derry they’ve known. Brian Lacy, former Heritage Director and celebrated expert on the city’s colourful history, will attempt to throw light of what our glorious past adds up to, while television’s Joe Mahon will bring his own personal and witty slant to the many sides of Derry life. And to begin with writer and broadcaster Ken McCormack will set the scene with old pictures and stories of people and places from bygone days.
So whether it’s a night at the Opera House, the tale of Colonel Knox and Victor Hugo’s pipe, or the making of some of Derry’s great characters all will be revealed. Believe it or not one of Derry’s famous visitors of the past has been summoned up to introduce the proceedings – none other than William Makepeace Thackeray in the guise of popular local actor Jim Craig. Thackeray arrived in Derry in the autumn of 1842 just a handful of years before writing his brilliant Vanity Fair. He might just divulge what brought him to the city and certainly we’ll hear what Derry was like at that time - an inn full of bibles, a row about tips and a massive hangover from late night hospitality as he wandered - or should it be staggered - through our quaint and old-fashioned streets.
A feature of the show will be the childhood memories of acclaimed local writer and historian Sean McMahon—Sean, with more than 70 books to his name will bring a rare and distinctive touch to the evening. Music has not been forgotten either. Playhouse favourite, talented singer Ursula McHugh, accompanied by the gifted Deirdre Doherty on piano will add a touch of longing for the old days and no doubt bring a nostalgic tear to the eye in what will be a wonderful and memorable evening.

A special event of dancing, music and food to mark World Bellydance Day will be held this Friday 12 May. The evening of fun, sparkle and jamming is hosted by local Arabic dance artist, Audrey Doherty. Catering is provided by the new Arabic Café in the Nerve Centre.

Janda Hasan arrived in Derry one year ago with other Syrian refugees. She said, “Everything is different here compared to Syria – the weather, the language and the food. It is good that people here are interested to try Arabic food too, like mint tea, humus and cake. I love working in the Arabic Café. I want to contribute to my city.”
Mosad Dandousha recently travelled from Egypt to Derry and now works in the Arabic Café. He said, “I feel very welcome in this city. It is my pleasure to share our Arabic food and culture with our new friends and neighbours. We have the best falafel and baklava sweets for 100 miles! Some customers like to talk with me and I like that.”
