Preparing and independently examining the annual accounts is a vital and important part of a charity’s governance.
In this workshop, participants will gain an understanding of independent examination and what a set of receipt and payment annual accounts should look like. The following areas will be covered:
Independent Examination (IE), what does this mean?
What should we look for in an IE?
Can my charity have an IE?
The difference between Audit and IE.
What do receipts and payment accounts (R&P) look like, including Trustee annual reporting (TAR).
What should I be looking for in a set of R&P accounts?

3 Help us raise £55,000 so Kerrie can fund HSCT treatment to halt her MS progression
As a Staff Nurse, Kerrie Hamilton has spent over 4 years providing compassionate & professional care for patients in The Foyle Hospice, Derry/Londonderry. She is a devoted & well-respected member of the nursing team, who now finds herself needing the help and support of the local Community more than ever.
For the last 11 years, Kerrie has struggled with debilitating neurological symptoms, which eventually led to her diagnosis of Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS) at the young age of 17.
As a result of ongoing and worsening conditions, she is now seeking a breakthrough treatment known as HSCT, that hopefully will help bring some stability & normality to her life and halt the progression of this unforgiving auto-immune disease.
The HSCT treatment that she is seeking, aims to stop the damage caused by MS. The chemotherapy based medical procedure is designed to ablate her immune system and effectively reboot it using her own stem cells that will be harvested prior to treatment.
This HSCT treatment is available in Mexico and a target of £55,000 is required to fund travel, surgical procedures, aftercare, and all medications.
Launched last year, Investing in Spaces and Places is our higher value Asda Foundation grant, aimed at improving spaces in the heart of local communities.
We know small grass roots organisations play a vital role in their community, making positive change and improving people’s lives every day, but the challenge for many is having the appropriate safe and inclusive space to bring people together and deliver their fantastic work.
Asda Foundation will be investing over £500,000 for this grant in 2023 to support bigger, long-lasting community projects within local communities where local people can be together and thrive.
Grants will be between £10,000-£25,000 and the application window closes on 19th March with funding announced in June 2023.
The grant criteria will focus on investing in community spaces and places and projects must fall into at least one of the following categories:
Building Repairs
Building Development
Outdoor Development

The Screwfix Foundation are passionate about making a difference to communities across the UK. We are a grant giving charity with a clear purpose to support projects that improve, repair and maintain homes and community facilities used by those in need throughout the UK.
The Screwfix Foundation currently offers local registered charities and not for profit organisations funding up to the region of £5,000. All applications are reviewed individually by our team on a quarterly basis, the review dates are in March, June, September and December. Please see our Full eligibility criteria.
Before applying for funding from The Screwfix Foundation, your organisation MUST:
Be a registered charity or not for profit organisation.
Help those in need. This could be by reason of financial hardship, sickness, distress or other disadvantages in the UK.
Be looking for funding to support projects that relate to the repair, maintenance, improvement or construction of. homes, community buildings and other buildings.
6NIEA 2023/24 Environment Fund Water Quality Improvement Strand
The fund is made available to support local communities and voluntary organisations to invest in projects that will deliver improvements in the local water environment, help connect people with the environment, and encourage behavioural change.
The fund is open to applications from constituted not-for-profit organisations and councils, and projects will run from spring 2023 until March 2024. The funding, subject to budget approval, will provide up to 85 % of funding for projects costing between £5,000 and £30,000.
The closing date for applications for the 2023/24 Environment Fund - Water Quality Improvement Strand is noon on 10 March 2023. Funding is subject to confirmation of 2023/24 budgets.

On Thursday 18th May 2023, business as usual will be paused, as Learning Pool’s entire team will go into the community to support charitable and environmental activities, in an effort we’re calling ‘Learning Pooloza’. Not-for-profit groups, social enterprises and educational organizations are now invited to register interest in taking part.
This focused business action means that we will contribute more than 3,500 volunteer hours in a single day, aiming for an extraordinary impact in the communities where our 450+ people live and work.
The company has teams of specialists who can support specific challenges many charities face in important areas like technology, human resources, marketing, branding and, of course, learning and development.
The closing date for applications is 19th February 2023.

Derry City and Strabane District Arts & Culture Sector reflects on 10 years since securing the UK City of Culture designation.
The UK City of Culture in 2013 brought the most significant singular injection of investment our Arts & Culture sector had seen to date. 10 years since feels like a good time to take our pulse, to look back assess where we are at and consider what the future might hold.
It has been a turbulent decade, from significant Cultural investment, legacy programmes, a new cultural strategy to Brexit, Covid, the collapse of Stormont, a cost of living crisis and a climate emergency. How have these local and wider political, societal and economic shifts impacted the arts and cultural sector and how do you feel about it all?
The Arts & Culture Strategy Co Delivery Group invite a conversation among artists, organisations, venues, audiences and volunteers to share their thoughts and energies - as part of an open, inclusive, honest and constructive City Conversation. This will enable us to reflect together on what we have learned and begin to articulate where we go from here, helping to inform a range of cultural strategies now being developed as well as a further conversation planned by the UK Department of Culture Media and Sport to take place in Derry-Londonderry in September 2023

10Public Consultation: Age Friendly Strategy and Action Plan for DCSDC area
Derry City and Strabane District Council area is calling on residents, organisations, stakeholders, and anyone else with an interest to share their views on a new Age Friendly Strategy and three-year Action Plan as part of a public consultation for the area.
Led by DCSDC on behalf of the Age Friendly Alliance for the area the Age Friendly Strategy and Action Plan has been developed following extensive consultation with people aged 50 and over living within the district council area.
Now open, the public consultation on the Age Friendly Strategy and three-year Action Plan survey will close on Wednesday 5th April 2023 at 5pm. Everyone can have their say on key outcomes within the new strategy and action plan by completing an online survey here www.derrystrabane.com/consultations and we would encourage you to raise awareness of this and encourage anyone with an interest to share their views.
The eligibility criteria for bereavement benefits have changed.
The Department for Work and Pensions has announced that from 9 February 2023, cohabiting parents will be able to claim bereavement benefits, to help them bring up dependent children.
Families who have previously been unable to get support because they weren’t married or in a civil partnership will be able to apply for retrospective payments going back to 30 August 2018.
A surviving parent who lost their partner on or after 6 April 2017 may be eligible for Bereavement Support Payment.
Those who lost their partner before 6 April 2017 may be eligible for Widowed Parent’s Allowance.
Backdated payments of Widowed Parent’s Allowance may be reduced by the amount of any other benefits paid in the period from 30 August 2018.
For anyone who was in receipt of Universal Credit, the award of WPA may result in an historic overpayment of Universal Credit.

RNID is resuming its free drop-in support session for hearing aid users support service in Carnhill Resource Centre on Thursday 16th February from 11am-12.30pm
The socially distanced drop off and pick up service provides new batteries, cleaning and retubing of ear moulds for NHS hearing aids.
The sessions are run by trained volunteers and funded by the Health & Social Care Board.
Celebrate our Love of the Arts by joining us at Eden Place Arts Centre for 'Our Climate Challenge' exhibition.
Twenty NWRC UAL Foundation Diploma Students in Art and Design are exhibiting their work in Eden Place Arts Centre from the 14th until 24th February.
The theme of the exhibition is Our Climate Challenge which is addressed by the students through a variety of media including Oil on Canvas, Mixed Media Textiles and Fashion.
Most of the students have never exhibited in public before and this exhibition represents their opportunity to show their talent to a wider audience.
Exhibition can be viewed : Monday - Friday 10am-6pm until 24th February.
