1 The Tesco Centenary Fund

The Tesco Centenary Fund offers a unique opportunity to benefit communities in Northern Ireland. Projects must provide a significant benefit to communities across Northern Ireland.

Community charity Groundwork NI is working in partnership with Tesco to deliver the Centenary Fund which marks their 100th birthday by giving charities the chance to bag a share of £100,000 in funding.

Funding Priority
The focus for this round will be on supporting those charities that are improving Health and Wellbeing across Northern Ireland. Tesco have a particular interest in supporting groups tackling cancer, heart disease and diabetes in line with their National Health Partnership.

How does the Centenary Fund Work?
The Tesco Centenary Fund is now open for applications from not for profit organisations in Northern Ireland. Applications are assessed by Groundwork to ensure they are eligible. Tesco colleagues will shortlist the projects to determine which go forward to the customer vote.

Three community projects will be voted on by customers in Tesco stores throughout Northern Ireland, in July/August and November/December 2019.

Following each vote, the project that receives the most votes will receive a grant of up to £50,000, the second-place project receives up to £30,000 and third place project gets up to £20,000.

Apply for a grant
The Tesco Centenary Fund NI is open now to applications and expected to close in mid-April 2019. Applications will then be shortlisted and taken forward for a public vote in July / August this year.

Use the link below to take the eligibility quiz. This short quiz will check that your project meets the basic requirements to be eligible for a Tesco Centenary Fund grant. If your project meets the criteria you will be given a link to the application form at the end of the quiz.

11  Imperialism on Trial: 'Fake News - Establishment Media & War On Journalism'

An Imperialism on Trial event, titled, 'Fake News - Establishment Media & War On Journalism' will take place at the Guildhall, Derry, on Thursday March 21.

A former UK Ambassador, and a former CIA Analyst will be joined by three journalists as they discuss the role of the establishment media, and the demonisation and censoring of alternative outlets and voices.

As the mainstream media beat the war drums and target independent countries for regime change; the alternative media act as a counter-balance, presenting an opposing narrative. In recent times, we have seen trust in the mainstream media decline drastically; while more and more seek their information from alternative sources. This is not just about loss of revenue, but more importantly for the hearts and minds of the public.

While Donald Trump may have popularised the term 'Fake News', journalists, academics and activists, have been calling out the establishment media in their promotion of imperialism, for many years before he ever threw his hat in the ring, politically.

Some of the topics that will be covered at the event will include:'Russiagate'- allegations of Russian meddling, hacking and collusion with Trump; False narrative on the war on Syria; The Magnitsky Act; Iran, Saudi Arabia, and what's not been reported on Yemen; Venezuela, and the Yellow Vests (Gilets Jaunes); Media & false consciousness,

The speakers are:

  • Craig Murray, Former UK Ambassador to Uzbekistan
  • Ray McGovern, Former CIA Analyst
  • Patrick Henningsen, 21st Century Wire
  • Catherine Shakdam, Writer & Commentator
  • John Wight, Journalist

Imperialism on Trial is a theme for events that bring together an array of speakers from the world of politics, academia, journalism, former diplomats and clergy to offer their insights and expertise on the subject of imperialism and neoliberalism.

All speakers are driven by a profound and sincere desire for an end to these endless wars of aggression, and regime changes. We all want peace, diplomacy, and good international relations to replace what has become the norm for the hegemon - the US and it's vassal states- of coercive diplomacy, sanctions, threats of war, hot wars, cold wars and proxy wars.

Come join us at the Guildhall, on Thursday March 21, and hear alternative voices presenting a different analysis to that of the Establishment media.

Doors Open 7pm.

Tickets £5 online with EVENTBRITE, Imperialism on Trial.

OR £5 at the door.

Saturday, March 30 will see the North West Migrants Forum celebrate another milestone with the film premiere highlighting the many wonderful achievements of the young people who took part in the Discover an Intercultural NI project throughout 2018-2019 being shown at the Playhouse in the city.

The family-friendly celebration is also a culmination of a series of activities delivered throughout the months of April 2018-March 2019 and will be held from 11am to 3pm.

Discover an Intercultural NI project worked with eight post-primary schools across the Derry City and Strabane District Council Area to strengthen social cohesion and inclusion by improving attitudes between young people from minority ethnic communities (BME) and young people from majority cultures.

Speaking at the launch of the event, Lilian Seenoi-Barr said: 'This will be a wonderful celebration of all that is good about intercultural activity in Northern Ireland. I would encourage  everyone out there to come along to what will be a great celebration in a family-friendly environment to witness what these young people have achieved.'

In addition to testimonials and presentations, the event will boast a line-up of exciting activities and local musical talent for the whole family to enjoy.

Also featured will be a children's craft and entertainment corner, Intercultural performances by St Cecilia's Irish dancers, Highland dancers, hip-hop fusion dance performed by our very own young cultural ambassadors and intercultural foods will bring voice and flair to the theme of this day.

21  Fault Lines: An Afternoon Symposium – Void Gallery in collaboration with Paper Visual Art Journal

Saturday 23rd March 2019, from 2-5pm
Launch 5-7pm
Void Gallery, Derry

The idea of the border has become a key cultural preoccupation of our times. In Europe and in the US, specific complex geopolitical borders are charged ideological devices, instrumentalised by right-wing commentators and politicians, and reduced in the process to simplified emblems. Anxieties about sovereignty, nationalism, cultural identity, and overpopulation, gravitate around these agitated symbolic fault lines. As new conflict zones proliferate internationally, and patterns of forced migration concentrate, the issue of the border becomes part of a broader crisis: a crisis of cohabitation. This is a crisis of which Ireland – with its own long-troubled border – has a particular vantage point.

This event, a collaboration between Void Gallery, Derry, and Paper Visual Art Journal, will bring together writers, artists, and researchers whose work investigates the uses, impacts, and cultural repercussions of borders in everyday life. The contested border in Ireland will serve as one major starting point for a discussion with deep pre-historical as well as wide global parameters, exploring how borders divide and how they connect.

This afternoon of presentations and talks is free and open to all, and booking is advised (please see www.derryvoid.com/openedground for further details). The symposium will be followed by the launch of the latest issue of Paper Visual Art Journal in the gallery from 5pm. Do join us.

This event is kindly funded by the Arts Council of Ireland.
