Preparing and independently examining the annual accounts is a vital and important part of a charity’s governance.
In this workshop, participants will gain an understanding of independent examination and what a set of receipt and payment annual accounts should look like. The following areas will be covered:
Independent Examination (IE), what does this mean?
What should we look for in an IE?
Can my charity have an IE?
The difference between Audit and IE.
What do receipts and payment accounts (R&P) look like, including Trustee annual reporting (TAR).
What should I be looking for in a set of R&P accounts?

Keadue Community Grants Fund was established by a local family to provide support to local organisations tackling the growing social need in Derry City and surrounding Waterside areas.
Organisations and constituted groups which are supporting local people through short and long term crises caused by a range of social factors including issues such as poverty, addiction, and low educational attainment, can apply for a grant. The organisations which support people can also apply for running costs to maintain the support offered to those in crisis and need.
Social factors can include but are not exclusive to: poverty, ill health, addiction, disability, family breakdown, abuse, bereavement, loneliness and isolation, or low educational attainment.
For the shortlisting process we will prioritise organisations that:
Are embedded in the local community and can evidence knowledge of local issues ;
Can provide impact stories of meeting need;
Can provide long term support to the people they are helping if needed;
Can specify organisational need;
Recognises the need to provide skills-building for staff and volunteers;
Are well regarded in the local community, and if needed, can provide 2 references
Connection and engagement for older people is often dependent on access to a space suitable to host groups. We know that the costs of this are often a major expense for small community groups and charities, and that these costs have been rising recently.
This year McCarthy Stone foundation would like to provide some support for the many small clubs and organisations across the country providing a regular warm space for older people in their community to come together, for example, lunch clubs, coffee mornings, or memory cafes. We are making £30,000 of funding available to those grassroots groups, often led by volunteers, who need a little extra help over the winter months.
The funding will be awarded in grants of £750, meaning there are 40 grants available. Applications are now open and will close at the end of February.
Funding will be prioritised to grassroots groups with annual income less than £100,000 p.a. and less than 6 months of free reserves. To qualify, your club must be independent, with its own constitution and bank account. Grants cannot be paid to individuals or profit-making organisations (you can read our Grant Making Policy on our website at www.mccarthystonefoundation.org under 'policies').

5New Round Of Housing And Homelessness Programme Set To Open
Online information sessions are now available for the new round of the Community Solutions to Housing and Homelessness programme.
The programme, which supports the development of project ideas and community solutions to challenges on Housing and Homelessness issues, brings project teams through a creative problem solving and seed fund process to support the development, testing and delivery of new ideas and collaborations that will address the root causes of housing issues and homelessness, stimulating innovation and creativity in the delivery of services and campaigns for change.
The Community Foundation for Northern Ireland is now seeking Expressions of Interest from individuals with lived experience and organisations (including any non-profit, social enterprise or statutory organisations working in Northern Ireland) interested in working with others to develop a solution to one or more of these challenges.
The Community Solutions to Housing and Homelessness programme will open for applications for project teams from Monday 6th March - Thursday 23rd March 2023.
6 Ulster University Help to Grow Programme Marketing
At Ulster University Business School, we are delighted to be delivering the Help to Grow: Management course.
This is a practical leadership and management training programme designed to help SMEs boost their performance, resilience and long-term growth. It provides an excellent opportunity for SMEs to access a unique executive development programme in Northern Ireland. Developed by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial strategy the course is designed to be undertaken alongside full-time work through a combination of online and face-to-face sessions.
The programme duration is 12 weeks across 50 hours-time commitment. The practically focused, high-quality curriculum supports SMEs to build capabilities in leadership, innovation, digital adoption, employee engagement, marketing, responsible business and financial management. By the end of the programme SMEs will develop a business growth plan, supported by dedicated programme mentors, to lead their business to release its full potential. The programme is 90% subsidised by government and is open to SMEs who have been in operation for at least one year with a minimum of 5 and maximum of 249 employees.
The programme is suitable for SMEs across all sectors and industries. Ulster University Business School will be delivering the next course in Derry/Londonderry starting on 8th March 2023. Full programme details can be found HERE

Work Well Live Well is a regional workplace health support service funded by the Public Health Agency and established in 2016.
Developing Healthy Communities currently leads on the 2020-2023 contract for Western Trust Area and its Health@Work NI team works within three distinct levels of commitment from employers. 10Future Schools: Supporting Sustainable Primary School Provision
The Integrated Education Fund and Ulster University are now inviting communities, parents and schools to come along to an information session about the Future Schools Project and how this can support local communities to determine their own pathways.
We have to date organised the following events but please feel free to get in touch if you would like an event organised in another area.
The Future Schools Project provides support for school communities to undertake self-evaluation in relation to school sustainability and also provides guidance on how communities can be engaged to ensure that everyone who lives in the area can have their views heard regarding education preferences. The Project has been developed by researchers at Ulster University (UU) with support from project partner the Integrated Education Fund (IEF) and with funding received from the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland.
A detailed toolkit has been created as part of the project that aims to empower and support schools and communities to identify what pathways and solutions would work best in their local area.
This information session will include a presentation by the Ulster University team on the Future Schools Project, how the toolkit can be used by school communities as well as discuss any questions relevant to their local area and context. The event will finish with refreshments and a light lunch.

Open call for young lgbtqia+ creatives (musicians, writers, poets, artists...) to work with us to create a new immersive audio artwork.
Are you aged between 12 and 18 and living in a rural area in the North West?
Are you interested in the arts?
Perhaps you write songs, or poetry, or play a musical instrument.
Perhaps you are a member of a drama group, or a creative writing group.
If you can imagine new things and want to express yourself, then this might be the project for you!
Between March and July 2023 we will get together regularly as a group to create the soundtrack for a new audio artwork to be presented as an immersive installation at the Alley Theatre in Strabane and Roe Valley Arts Centre in Limavady.
With help from workshop leaders, you will use sounds to build up an imaginary cinema soundtrack - Cinema for the qu(ears) - using recordings from daily life, songs you might compose during the project, interviews with friends and family, or imagined sound created in a studio. The content of the soundtrack can be anything you wish - the only limits are the limits of your imagination!
Workshops will be held in Limavady or Strabane depending on which is closest to where you live.
14Rainbow Project's Exhibition for LGBTQIA+ History Month
Open Day Exhibition - Saturday 25th February from 10:00am to 5:00pm, Foyle Centre
This exhibition is to celebrate LGBTQIA+ History Month and includes a collection and pieces around queer history, people, culture and events. This is a public event open to anyone to pop in during the day, grab a cuppa and walk through the exhibit.

‘Ask for ANI’ domestic abuse codeword scheme to be piloted in four Jobs & Benefits offices
The Department wishes to inform you that a scheme which allows domestic abuse victims to receive emergency help, is to be piloted in four Jobs & Benefits offices (JBos)
The ‘Ask for ANI’ codeword scheme provides anyone at risk of abuse with support in accessing help and a safe space in which to do so.
The ‘Action Needed Immediately (ANI)’ scheme launched in pharmacies in January 2021. Due to its success, the scheme is now being extended to include four of the Department’s Jobs & Benefits offices.
Each office will take part in a nine-month pilot with specialist staff at each location trained to help those suffering, or at risk of, abuse. Safe spaces will be available in Armagh, Andersonstown, Larne and Lisnagelvin JBos where individuals who ask for ‘ANI’ will be brought to a safe, private room.
The ‘ANI’ codeword alerts staff that a victim is seeking immediate, urgent help. A clear process will be in place to help them provide necessary support. Their role focuses on offering individuals a quiet, private space to contact specialist services who can advise and support accordingly.
