1  Social Justice Small Grants Programme

The programme is funded by Atlantic Philanthropies as part of its Human Rights legacy fund in Northern Ireland to support local community groups with projects and initiatives that contribute to peacebuilding, tackle the impact of poverty and austerity measures and/or give voice to excluded groups.

Closing Date: Feb 14, 2020 13:00
Area: Northern Ireland
Grant size: Up to £5,000

Priorities: Locally based community groups and locally based ‘communities of interest’ with an interest in promoting or embedding human rights and social justice in their day to day work for and with their chosen communities.

2 BBC Broadcast Appeals

BBC's Broadcast Appeals provides an opportunity for local charities to describe their work and to make a broadcast appeal for volunteers or funds. 

Applications are now being invited for Broadcast Appeal slots on local television and radio. These opportunities will be available from June 2020 onwards.

4 Urgent and Emergency Care Workshop

You may be aware that the PCC recently launched ‘Make Change Together’, an important partnership initiative.

This voluntary recruitment and support programme is designed to facilitate collaboration between members of the public and Health and Social Care Northern Ireland in the future transformation of services.  

We have an opportunity for you to help shape thinking in the Department of Health’s Review of Urgent and Emergency Care.

There are three main groups identified as regular users of  Urgent and Emergency Care services that we wish to speak with; these are Older people, those living with Mental Health issues and Infants, children and young people.

6 Discussion Regarding Zero Hour Contracts 

The Stormont ‘New Approach, New Decade’ document includes a move to ban Zero Hour Contracts.  The full Council passed a motion committing to 'doing everything it can to help make the north-west region a zero hour contract free zone'. 

The motion also agrees to convene a meeting with 'business leaders, trade unions, employer's organisations, youth groups, anti-poverty groups, and any other concerns sections of civil society' towards taking practical action. 

You are therefore invited to ‘Save the Date’ for this meeting on Wednesday 19th February at 5:00pm in the Whitaker Suite, Guildhall , Derry.

 7 Public Affairs Forum Council Engagement - DCSDC

This session would give Public Affairs Forum members an opportunity to engage with officials and elected representatives from Derry City & Strabane District Council.

Please note, this session is only open to NICVA's Public Affairs Forum members. For more information about our Public Affairs Forum and to get involved, there is more information here.

The session will include:

  • An overview of roles and responsibilities in the Council

  • How the Council and their Committees work (how do decisions get made) and the scope for individuals and organisations to influence decision making in Council

  • Mechanisms for the voluntary and community sector to engage with the Council, including the Community Planning Process

8 Launch of Sectarianism: The Key Facts

Mike Nesbitt MLA and Colin McGrath MLA invite you to the launch of Sectarianism: The Key Facts, a framework report on tackling institutional sectarianism in Northern Ireland

12pm to 2pm, Monday 17 February 2020, Room 115, Parliament Buildings, Stormont

Commissioned by the Equality Coalition, independent researcher Dr Robbie McVeigh has authored a piece of research on contemporary sectarianism in Northern Ireland. The 40 page report looks at ‘institutional sectarianism’ in NI - especially where there is evidence of sectarianism in decision-making - and puts forward recommendations for state action on sectarianism.

The launch of Sectarianism: The Key Facts will open with an introduction from Equality Coalition Co-Conveners Patricia McKeown (UNISON) and Daniel Holder (CAJ). Dr McVeigh will then share some of the main findings from his report. There will also be a panel discussion on sectarianism with Seán Brady (PPR), Elaine Crory (Belfast Feminist Network & WRDA), Kat Healy (Social Justice Trust), Gráinne Ní Ghilín (An Dream Dearg), and Rachel Powell (Women’s Sector Lobbyist). Time will be set aside at the event for questions from the audience.

10 Parental Alienation United As One Conference 2020

La Dolce Vita Project in association with Parental Alienation Europe will be hosting "Parental Alienation United As One Conferences", on 21st April 2020 in Croke Park Dublin and in The City Hotel, Derry/Londonderry 23rd April 2020.

International guest speakers include:
Dr Demosthenes Lorandos: PhD, Forensic Psychologist, member of California, Michigan and New York State bars and member of the Supreme Courts of the United States. 

Professor William Bernet: Graduate of Harvard Medical School. Expert in Forensic Psychiatry. Dr Bernet, evaluates adults, children, and families involved in legal situations, both civil and criminal. 

Dr Steve Millar: A Clinical Instructor at Harvard Medical. M. D in Psychology and Medicine from Brown University. Dr Steve Millar is an International expert on estrangement and parental alienation with a particular focus on differentiating between the two.

Rory O’Connor PhD CPsychol AFBPsS FAcSS, a native of Derry, is Professor of Health Psychology at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, a Past President of the International Academy of Suicide Research and a current Vice President of the International Association for Suicide Prevention. 

Brian O Sullivan (PAE) A Consultant Systemic (Family) Psychotherapist. .Brian has developed two M.Sc. programs, in Child & Adolescent Psychotherapy, and in Family Therapy both validated by Middlesex University in London. His primary undergraduate award is in Emergency Medical Science. 

Brendan Guildea: Brendan was called to the Irish bar in 2011 and has developed a specialized practice in high-conflict child access cases, acting for both custodial and non-custodial parents. 

Caroline Langley B.L: A world expert in family law. With nearly three decades of experience, she is a pre-eminent specialist in international family law with a focus on parental alienation, the Hague Convention. She has worked with the US Department of States, the US Citizens Service, foreign governments and inter-pol.

Anne is a practising counselling psychologist registered with the Health Care Professions Council and the Psychological Society of Ireland. 18 Job Opportunity with Kinship Care NI

Kinship Care NI invite applicants for the position of:
TRAINING & OUTREACH WORKER

‘KINNECTIONS’ PROJECT
(Ref: KCNI.TO.R1.01)

To deliver training, workshops and information sessions to kinship carers, and develop a network of support, including support groups and family recreation for kinship carers and their children.

Fixed term, funded until the 29th October 2020 at 37.5 hours per week (then subject to funding)

Salary: £21,533 per annum

Based in Derry/Londonderry, but will involve travelling to other parts of Northern Ireland

·  A relevant recognised qualification in health and social care, community development or related field (Minimum NVQ level II or equivalent).

· Five GCSEs (minimum) at Grade C or above (or equivalent) including English Language and Maths.

  • Proven work experience working with vulnerable/disadvantaged children, young people and/or families.
  • Proven work experience delivering education/training programmes in the community.
  • Excellent work ethic.
  • A current driving licence with access to a car. (Can be waived in the case of applicant whose disability prohibits driving, but who is able to organise suitable alternative arrangements).
  • IT skills.

As an organisation our aim is to bring awareness, educate, empower and encourage communities in  understanding the affects of domestic abuse,violence, parental alienation, not just on the individuals but also on the family, friends, communities.  

We are inviting individuals to express an interest in joining our Board of Directors. These positions are voluntary although out of pocket expenses regarding travel to meetings will be reimbursed.

We would ask those who have a passion or background knowledge, education in the area of domestic abuse and violence to consider expressing an interest.

This is not a mandatory requirement and we would also welcome those with a background in Community Development, Law, Accountancy,  working with Children and Young people,  public sector business skills, Human Rights, and who can demonstrate core responsibilities within these roles.

All members must be over 18 years of age, will be subject to an Access NI or a Gardai Vetting check and will be required to attend 6 meetings per year.

Please include in your expression of interest ; Name, Address, Contact Number, Email address. Any conflict of Interests regarding membership of any other organisations or a member of other Boards. A short personal statement to include education, and what you feel you could bring to La Dolce Vita Project.
