  • Basic Finance for Small Charities

14 January 2020
5:00pm to 7:30pm
Holywell Diverse City Community Partnership

A free practical workshop for treasurers, or those that keep the financial records, of small charities to help them establish appropriate financial systems to keep their organisation safe.

Good financial management is an integral part of ensuring good governance as it not only helps charity trustees to fulfil their legal duties but also helps to protect the charity from mismanagement of funds.  Having robust financial procedures in place will help to improve organisational capacity and effectiveness.

The focus of this workshop will be on basic record keeping and financial management including setting up and maintaining the books (income and expenditure ledger, petty cash); cash handling, understanding charity funds (restricted and unrestricted) and accounts and the role of the treasurer.

As we’re expecting a lot of demand for this training, we’re limiting places to one per organisation in the first instance and holding a waiting list for other interested members of the organisation. Please note that refreshments will be available from 4.45PM

Funded by Halifax Foundation for Northern Ireland and delivered in association with North West Community Network.

  • Building Cyber Resilience for Small Organisations

22 January 2020 -
6:00pm to 8:00pm
Holywell Diverse City Community Partnership

This session will take a practical approach to help trustees and personnel in voluntary and community organisations to build cyber resilience. NICVA has teamed up with industry experts to provide this tailored cyber security session that will focus on the particular challenges that face small voluntary and community organisations.

The session will include:

  • An overview of current cyber threats
  • Appropriate risk assessment practices
  • Practical, low cost, risk-mitigation controls
  • Signposting to resources and further guidance for boards, staff and volunteers

As our ability to harness technology and digital services for voluntary and community activity grows, so too does the challenge of keeping our organisations safe from cyber fraud and data breaches.

Ensuring that organisations have the resilience to face threats from malicious and indiscriminate cyber-attacks is now imperative for boards and personnel in all sectors.

Email fraud, ransomware attacks and data breaches are risks for all organisations regardless of size or sector. Local playgroups or sports clubs through to international household name charities are all vulnerable. Ensuring that we keep information about the people we work with secure is a top priority. In addition, preventing fraud and complying with regulatory requirements such as GDPR are key organisational governance issues.

Charities and voluntary organisations have an added challenge in terms of the tendency for being open and transparent about activities and finances, holding sensitive personal data, managing organisations with limited resources and an expectation to focus resources on front line services rather than back office services.

Improve your awareness of cyber security threats and help your organisation improve its cyber resilience. Please note that refreshments will be available from 5.45PM.

Funded by Halifax Foundation for Northern Ireland and delivered in association with North West Community Network.

9  Pin Boards for hire

Are you planning any conferences, seminars or similar type meetings in the New Year?  Then Pin Boards might be just what you're looking for! Pin Boards bring that extra special dynamic to your meeting, conference, seminar or event.

Pin Boards are an invaluable multi-purpose tool for supporting meetings, workshops, exhibitions, conferences, training programmes and seminars.  They are free-standing and support your group needs especially when space and time is at a premium and seeing 'the bigger picture' is necessary by offering a panoramic view not afforded by the humble flipchart which also helps to encourage greater input from staff and volunteers.

Pin Boards are lightweight, mobile, flexible, durable, easily transportable and environmentally friendly.  They have a wide variety of use, are lighter than most flipchart stands yet can hold up to four times the capacity allowing you to reference both current and previous notes at the same time rather than wasting time searching back and forth through numerous pages.

Pin Boards can be used as room dividers by creating a multitude of break-out space and can be adapted for 'Visual Harvesting' (Graphic Facilitation). They also act as a substitute for wall mounts ensuring no damage to venue through the use Blue-Tac or sticky tape and thus help to reduce costs of materials.   Each board comes with fold-back clips, protective cover and pins.

Pin Boards are available for hire to groups, organisations and businesses across the voluntary, statutory and corporate sectors.  We will deliver the boards to your setting, set them up and return to collect them.  You can hire the boards for as long as you want and there are no hidden costs - you pay per board per session, e.g., one session equates to a morning, an afternoon or an evening.

ALTERNATIVE BEDTIME STORIES (duration 55mins)

"Once upon a time, two fair maidens dragged fairy tales kicking and screaming into the 21st century in this sharp and original review of all things “happily ever after”.

Follow the trail of breadcrumbs into the mind of the MakeyUppers where you will stumble across the stories you thought you knew…they may not be as sweet as you remember.

'Topical, 'hilarious' and 'face-achingly original'- these Derry girls have been wowing audiences across the UK and Ireland and received 5 star reviews at Edinburgh Fringe, 2018. You cannot miss this 'thought-provoking' and 'strikingly different' show.

ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS STORIES (duration 1hr10mins)
A Christmas antidote for grown ups with all the seasons’ favourites. A Panto Nativity, an alternative carol service, the Krampus, a wandering babushka, and Christmas like you’ve never experienced it before. The comedy storytellers delve into the furthest recesses of the festive season from across the world, find strange and familiar traditions, and give them the skew-whiffed MakeyUpper makeover to bring you a hilariously irreverent show with humour and horror in equal measure.

From the people who brought you ‘Alternative Bedtime Stories’, this is festive foolery not for the faint of heart.
