1 New funding opportunity for community groups in North West Northern Ireland

The Ideas Fund £1.2 million grant extension

Today, The Ideas Fund has announced it will be opening its next round of grant funding to support up to seven new partnerships in North West Northern Ireland. The Fund will focus on ideas related to mental wellbeing, with £1.2 million funding to support community initiatives in four geographical areas of the UK: North West Northern Ireland, the Scottish Highlands and Islands, Oldham and Hull.

The Ideas Fund is a grants scheme, run by the British Science Association (BSA) and funded by the Wellcome Trust, that enables the UK public to develop and try out ideas that address problems related to mental wellbeing through collaborating with professional researchers. 

For this latest round of funding, the BSA have changed the application process based on the feedback and learning they received from organisations who applied in 2021 (the pilot year). This revised application process should reduce the time applicants need to spend on their submission. By providing more in-depth support to shortlisted proposals, the BSA hope to help applicants with innovative ideas to realise their visions.

The expression of interest for submissions will open from Wednesday 27 April 2022 and the application deadline is midday on Wednesday 8 June 2022 for both community groups and researchers. The BSA are particularly interested in applications from those who are keen to work in partnership to develop the project collaboratively.

A series of webinars will be held to give more information about the Fund and the submission process for organisations that are interested in applying for this next round of funding.

2 AXA PARKS Fund

Never has there been more important time for our green spaces to flourish.

Parks, large and small, in local communities throughout Ireland, are vital sources of respite, places to exercise, somewhere to meet family and friends, help protect our environment and nurture places for our local habitat to flourish.

Priorities:
• Organisations that have a strong community engagement track record.
• Projects that provide opportunities for community members to participate in the creation and/or enhancement of green spaces.
• Green spaces that aim to improve mental or physical health.
• Green spaces that allow for an educational element, such as allowing for workshops on biodiversity, planting, or citizen scientist projects etc.
• Projects that will be sustained beyond the life of this grant.
• Projects that adhere to environmentally friendly principles and use of sustainable materials.

Grants between £3,000 and £20,000

 Healthy Heart Grant 2022

A Healthy Heart Grant  provides up to £10,000 to local community projects. Funding is made up of donations made in Subway® stores near you.

We’re looking for original, innovative projects that promote a healthy heart and help reduce the risk of developing heart disease in your area and across the country.

4 The Hedley Foundation

We award grants to those charities that are able to demonstrate quantifiable outcomes to beneficiaries. Typically, grants of up to £5,000 are regularly made and occasional larger sums are given to charities where high impact can be achieved. Similarly, smaller charities often benefit from smaller grants of £250 upwards.  

You should meet the following criteria:
  • You are a small- to mid-size UK registered charity
  • Your application is not for salaries, building construction, general running costs, transport, financial deficits or overseas projects
  • Your application is not on behalf of a church, museum or an individual
  • You have not received a previous grant from The Foundation within the last 18 months
The Foundation receives over 1000 applications per year of which around 250 are successful. As a guide, you should: 
  • complete the application concisely, avoiding acronyms or jargon
  • include a copy of your most recent set of audited accounts
  • include a breakdown of costs showing how the grant would be spent
  • clearly state the anticipated outcome or impact, together with who and how many people would benefit
  • ensure your contact details are accurate, specifically email and contact telephone numbers
The Trustees meet four times per year to review grant applications. These should be received in good time before each meeting and at least 6 weeks before the meeting date. The next meeting date is 27 July 2022.

5 abrdn Financial Fairness Trust

The abrdn Financial Fairness Trust's mission is to contribute towards strategic change which improves financial well-being in the UK. They want everyone to have a decent standard of living and have more control over their finances. They fund research, campaigning and policy work to improve the living standards and personal finances of people struggling to make ends meet. They believe in collaboration, working with their partners to make the UK a more financially fair place for people on low-to-middle incomes.

They fund research, campaigning and policy work.

Funding programmes focus on:

They fund organisations undertaking charitable activities. You don’t need to be a registered charity. Organisations they fund must have a governing body with at least three non-executive directors/trustees (at least three who are not employees of the organisation or affi liated to it in any other way). They will fund a wide range of organisations including voluntary organisations, think tanks, campaigning groups, research bodies and universities. They are also able to partner with other funders, government, employers and regulators in jointly funding relevant work.

They will fund a range of strategic work. This is work that benefits more than individuals and has the potential to benefit large numbers of people within the UK. This work must aim to create a step change in policy, practice, attitudes and/or behaviour. It includes policy work, campaigning, research, public attitudinal work, and improving practice and design.

They are interested in funding issues, where they can add value. In particular, where there is limited funding available and there is a clear niche for the Trust.

6 The Code of Good Governance - Pick up your free copy

NWCN have copies of the 3rd edition of the Code of Good Governance for community and voluntary organisations. You can pick these up by calling into reception at DiverseCity Community Partnership, 10-14 Bishop Street.

The Code of Good Governance sets out the principles and key elements of good governance for the boards of not-for-profit organisations. The aim of the Code is to help the boards of these organisations to develop high standards of governance and improve their governance practice.

 7 Consultation events on Review of Urgent and Emergency Care Services in NI

This consultation invites people to have their say on the future of Urgent and Emergency Care in Northern Ireland.

As part of the consultation DoH are inviting members of the public to join us at one of our online public consultation events. You are invited to register for one of the upcoming public consultation engagements events being held to support direct engagement with citizens as part of the ongoing public consultation on the review of urgent and emergency care in Northern Ireland.

The events will take place online via zoom, the dates and times are:

10 Gambling Harm Prevention Training

YWA (Youth Work Alliance) has been working for over a year and a half with YGAM (Young Gamers and Gamblers Education Trust)  Homepage - YGAM and GamCare   Young People’s Support Service - GamCare in delivering an education and support programme to Northern Ireland to practitioners from various fields, with the mission of safeguarding future generations from gambling and gaming related harms.  

Gambling-related harms have been presented as a hidden issue in Northern Ireland for many years, which makes it even more vital for us to ensure children and vulnerable people are informed, educated and safeguarded against the potential harms associated with gambling and increasingly, gaming too.  

We offer FREE online workshops to equip you with the knowledge and tools to inform, educate and safeguard the young people you work with in relation to gaming and gambling and the associated risks.

Our City and Guilds assured training runs in 2 parts or as 1 bespoke session at the request of your school/organisation.

The aims of our sessions are to:

  • Increase your knowledge and understanding of gaming and gambling-related harm in the UK
  • Provide you with resources to deliver session directly to children and young people to prevent future harm Support you with information on how to spot signs of harm and how to sign post young people for support
Following this session you will receive:
  • A City & Guilds certificate and digital credential
  • Access to over 450 FREE resources.  We have a Full Schemes of Work and lesson plans as well as Youth Work specific resources

14 Public Appointment Competition: Chair of Tourism NI

The Department for the Economy have advertised an open competition to recruit a new Chair to the Board of Tourism Northern Ireland (TNI), with effect from 1 July 2022.

TNI is a statutory Non-Departmental Public Body responsible for the development of Northern Ireland as a tourist destination as well as being responsible for the promotion and marketing of Northern Ireland as a tourist destination within Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The organisation’s overall aim is to ensure that tourism contributes to the creation of a dynamic, competitive economy.
  • The Chairperson is expected to attend Board meetings and other events, amounting to 4 – 6 days per month.
  • In addition the successful candidate will be expected to attend occasional evening engagements. 
  • Remuneration is £27,060 per annum (Non pensionable).
The Chairperson will also receive reimbursement for all reasonable travel and subsistence costs, and any dependant-carer expenses incurred whilst undertaking Board duties.
 
We particularly welcome applications from people with a disability and those from minority ethnic communities as these groups are currently under-represented on the Board. Female Chairs are currently under-represented across all Bodies sponsored by DfE and applications from females would also be particularly welcome.
