NWCN Ebulletin 17 February 2021

1 The Ideas Fund: Last chance to register for Webinar

This is a grants programme which enables groups to develop and try out new ideas that address problems related to mental wellbeing.  Derry City & Strabane District Council is one of four areas within the UK who will benefit from the programme.

The scheme will test a new way of funding that connects communities with researchers to access knowledge, research skills and resources. The North West Community Network & Developing Healthy Communities will guide and support potential applicants in the Derry & Strabane area with developing their ideas and facilitate connections between communities and researchers.

There are two levels of funding available:
·         grants of up to £25,000 to help develop ideas that are at a very early stage; and
·         grants in the region of £90,000 to support, adapt and expand ideas that have already been developed and tested.

The Ideas Fund is for you if:

  • You have an idea (even at a very early stage) related to mental wellbeing that you want to explore and develop…
  • Your idea focuses on a problem that your community wants to solve
  • Your community is based in the Derry/Strabane area
  • You are keen to collaborate with professional researchers to bring your idea to life

Pre-application workshops will be held as follows and will be recorded. Sign up for a session on this webpage:
https://www.theideasfund.org/application

· 18 Feb 2021 at 1400 – Why the Ideas Fund?
· 4 March 2021 at 1400 – What does Mental Wellbeing mean to you?
· 18 March 2021 at 1400 – What does your ideal partnership look like (Building Community-Researcher partnerships).

2 NI Trans Community Fund

We've been able to set aside a pot of money to help trans communities who are struggling with their finances through the coronavirus pandemic and especially after a tough Christmas period.

Belfast City Council has provided funding to support trans residents of Belfast through this community support fund. We have extended this support to trans individuals across Northern Ireland using our own funds.

We'll be providing between £50-£100 to individuals in need of support through this time. Due to funding rules, we can only provide up to 2 offers of support for each household, and 1 per person.

This form will be open until 11.59pm GMT on February 28th, but may be extended.

Please find
attached some useful information. Never before has play been so important for children’s health and wellbeing. It is through play that children make sense of the world that they are living in – a world at the minute, that for many, is full of change and uncertainty.

Make sure you take time to play every day.

PlayBoard (the lead agency for children’s play) are kindly sharing the following Play Matters – Play for Parents guide
https://www.playboard.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/PlayBoard-Play-For-Parents-Guide-2019.pdf in which parents will find lots of tips and information on the importance of play.

Also being shared is a flyer and link
https://www.playboard.org/play-ideas/ to a resource bank full of playful ideas for parents to try at home.

We suggest that parents will find these resources most helpful at this time.

22 Every Move You Make

A dramatic monologue on abusive relationships among young people
by Patricia Byrne, performed by Roma Harvey

Available for schools and youth centres to book online!

A SOLE PURPOSE PRODUCTION

Jenni's 16th birthday is coming up, and her new boyfriend Jamie will be there. He is so nice. He is interested in everything she does. He always wants to know where she is and what she is doing. He texts her all the time and follows her every move on Facebook. But things start to take a turn, and Jenni isn't so sure anymore.

The play follows the ups and downs of a young woman's relationship as it goes from being near perfect to becoming an impossible nightmare. The production explores the issue of abusive relationships among young people. It was developed in consultation with Foyle Women’s Aid, NSPCC and Youth Action NI. The performance is followed by a Q+A with representatives of organisations working to stop domestic violence against women and children.

Now available for schools and youth centres across Northern Ireland to book online!

“The Sole Purpose dramatisations are a powerful tool which enables us to address some very sensitive issues within the Preventative Curriculum. I wholeheartedly support the work of Sole Purpose.” Ms S Mallett, Principal, Thornhill College Derry

"This was a very moving piece of theatre. The aim is to disturb and that was achieved fully. None watching this play would ever again be victim to such abuse having witnessed a relay of classic symptoms.”  Imelda Foley, Arts Council of Northern Ireland

Sole Purpose Productions is a multi award winning theatre company that has toured work throughout Ireland, the UK, and the USA. It is core funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. This project is supported by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland through the Tampon Tax Community Fund.

To book an online performance and Q&A for your school or youth centre please contact Patricia Byrne at solepurpose@mac.com or phone 028 7127 9918.

23 Curatorial Ethics Workshop

Void Online - Friday 19 March, 10am-2pm

Nanne Buurman I Annie Fletcher I Irit Rogoff I nynnyt

Chaired by Mirjami Schuppert
Introduction by Mary Cremin, Director, Void Gallery

Director of Titanik, Turku and independent curator Mirjami Schuppert, in partnership with Void Gallery, is organising a workshop on Curatorial Ethics.

Stemming from her PHD research, this workshop aims to produce a working definition of ethics within the framework of contemporary curatorial practice, and to answer the question: What do we talk about when we talk about curatorial ethics? Whilst in museology, different guidelines have been established (for example Code of Ethics for Museums, defined by the Museums Association) to guarantee ethical conduct, in contemporary curatorial practice, which is very much about communication, dialogue, interaction, change, and creation, a normative approach would not seem to suffice, but a more flexible approach to ethics is needed. The expertise of the invited speakers ranges from the question of curatorial authorship, institutional practices, the curatorial, curating as a critical practice to ethics more widely, and feminist curatorial practice. Local curators, artists, and students are invited to participate as active workshop members.

The day will consist of presentations by the speakers, Q&As, and break out sessions to give all participants an opportunity to engage in the conversation.

Maximum participants: 30
Cost: £5

To sign up please follow the link below.

This project is kindly sponsored by Visual Artists Ireland. It is presented in partnership with the Finnish Institute in London.
