1 Western Trust - How the Health Service Works

NWCN are working with the Local Commissioning Group (LCG) in the Western Trust area to let people have the chance to give feedback on their experiences as a service user of the Health Service and to find out everything you need to know about how the Health Service works.   The workshop will last about an hour with a presentation followed by discussions.

A summary of the main aims of the workshop are:

  • Increase awareness of HSC services and how they work
  • Increase awareness of responsibilities and challenges within HSC
  • Increase awareness on what we can each do to choose well and seek the most appropriate support when needed

We want to hear from as many people as possible so that we can gather feedback from the north west area.

Let NWCN know if this is something that you think your group would be interested in taking part in and we can agree a suitable date.

"Guardians of the Flame”  produced by Jonny Clark, Director of Youth With A Mission Ireland and English film maker Josh Eaves of Global Fire Creative will be screened at the Holywell Building, Bishop Street on April 9th at 7 30 pm.

“Guardians of The Flame” is about three individuals who have displayed inspirational courage and compassion despite great personal loss, and who continue to pursue their desire for peace and reconciliation.

Clark, who grew up in Belfast, talks to Alan McBride, whose wife Sharon and father-in-law was killed in the Shankill bomb, Eugene Reavey whose three brothers were killed in the Whitecross shooting, and Beryl Quigley whose husband, Bill McConnell, was killed by the IRA.

Others interviewed include musician and peace activist Tommy Sands and former SDLP MP Seamus Mallon who recalls visiting the Reavey family in Whitecross on the night of the massacre.

Also taking part are Padraig O’ Tuama (Corrymeela), Rev. Steve Stockman (Fitzroy Presbyterian Church) Ed Petersen ((Clonard Monastery) and Fr. Mark Ephrem (Benedictine Monastery Rostrevor).

The filmmakers took their title from a quote by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks in his book The Dignity of Difference, “Religion is like a fire and like a fire it warms but it also burns, and we are the guardians of the flame.”

16  Motorists urged to ditch the car and Walk to Work on Friday April 5th

Local people are being asked to put their best foot forward to promote fitness and support the local environment by joining in Walk to Work Day on Friday April 5th.

Whatever the weather, Derry City and Strabane District Council is calling on everyone to support the campaign, which endeavours to get everyone walking part or all of the way to work to promote better health and cleaner air.

Participants who take in the city side of the Peace Bridge on their journey between 8.30am – 10am will be rewarded with free giveaways, including safety lights, tote bags, reusable coffee cups and breakfast snacks (while stocks last).

Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor John Boyle, lent his voice to the campaign, encouraging drivers to ditch the car on Friday.

“Walk to Work Day provides an opportunity for those people who take driving for granted to try walking to school or work, or even just enjoying the fresh air and fitness benefits of walking 15 minutes of their daily commute,” he explained.

“We all know that walking is good for us and the environment and in a city that boasts an ever expanding greenway network and beautiful surroundings, we have no excuse not to get out there and get walking!”

Those who can’t walk all the way are encouraged to mix their walk with public transport, leaving the car a good distance from the office, or taking a walk at lunchtime.

Council Sustrans Officer Emma Hagger said: “We know that everyone leads busy lives and we can all argue that we simply don’t have time to Walk to Work. Well Friday 5th April is your chance to switch up your routine and see how walking to work enhances your day.

“In such a fast paced world we can forget there’s more to life than working and sleeping - taking a walk can help us appreciate things we normally miss. Whether it’s enjoying nature and reconnecting with the natural environment or taking time to catch up with a friend, the health benefits are unmistakable. I want to encourage everyone to give it a go.”

Don’t forgot to plan a stop by Council’s Walk to Work hub where you can pick up giveaways and reward yourself for your efforts. You can find out more about the North West Greenway Project and Council’s Active Travel campaign at www.derrystrabane.com/Subsites/Northwest-Greenway-Network/Our-vision

17  Coming up at Eden Place Arts Centre

Muterial – Siobhan Meehan at the Eden Place Arts Centre

Launch at 7.00pm Thursday, 4th April 2019
Exhibition runs until 11th April 2019

‘Muterial’ is a body of work by Siobhan Meehan which includes painting, printing, photography and sculpture. This work explores concepts around the female voice and body, presence and absence.  She uses the associations of thread, cloth and embroidery with ‘women’s work’ and ‘craft’ to make work that eschews objectification.  The physicality of thread is a female signifier and it is the materiality of this medium that speaks of her presence, her voice.

She references the complex history of women and its connections to making to challenge traditional perceptions of value systems in the history of art. The work asks questions about the cultural hierarchy that defines these ‘female’ practices and materials to be substantively and intellectually inferior to painting and sculpture.

The history of the thousands of women in Ireland whose long hours of sewing and making in their homes and factories was an important reference point in bringing this body of work to exhibition.

Easter Students' Exhibition
Launch on Wednesday 17th April at 7:30
Exhibition continues on Thursday 18th April from 10am - 5pm

18  A Visibility Matrix – Sven Anderson & Gerard Byrne at Void Gallery

Exhibition Launch Saturday 13th April, 6:30-8:30pm
Artists In Conversation, 5:30pm
Exhibition runs 16th April – 8th June 2019

There is now an expectation of visibility, from any place, at any time and by anyone.
- Sven Anderson & Gerard Byrne

A Visibility Matrix is an artwork that explores the politics and conditions of visibility. Initiated by Dublin-based artists and long-term collaborators, Sven Anderson and Gerard Byrne, A Visibility Matrix assembles contributions from a distributed panel of artists, film-makers and others within a synchronised, multi-channel video installation.

A Visibility Matrix emerges as a response to the ambitions of abandoned art and technology projects from the 1960s–1980s that prioritised multi-screen video projection, monitor arrays, communications networks and algorithmic composition principles. These projects explored visual excess and hyperstimulation prior to the development of the Internet, and before multi-screen video displays expanded into the vernacular backdrop of everyday public and private life. Considered now, the plural voices of these experiments in perception and communication simultaneously prophesise and bypass the homogenised conditions that have come to be accepted as network culture.

Exploring the paradigms of what we see and how we construct visual knowledge, A Visibility Matrix returns to the instincts of these projects. It proposes a condensed counterpoint to the migratory, hyper-networked nature of visibility in contemporary culture by conjuring an offline matrix of video material presented in the gallery space for communal observation. The artwork speculates on an alternative to the composite formed by subject + smartphone + online-video-sharing-platform that has come to represent the current standard of visibility. It gathers content through an associative network of collaborators including visual anthropologists, cinematographers, documentary filmmakers and others from across the globe. By shifting focus from the production of images for sharing online to their reception in a shared, fixed-time spatial context, A Visibility Matrix offers another window on visual excess, confronting its own situated spatiality in order to reflect the more universal conditions that it addresses.

A Visibility Matrix manifests as a network of screens and spatial gestures, in which we observe images being duplicated, mirrored and displaced. These gestures unfold over days and months of exhibition, pursuing both repetition and re-assembly. The system that determines these patterns reveals itself through its precision but also through moments of uncertainty, asserting its presence through a series of vocal cues that punctuate the relationship between the database of video and the space of exhibition. This system speculates on the possibilities of video not as passive image but as an active signal, and the gallery as a site of condensation; a shared space and a space of reflection.

A Visibility Matrix is an artwork formed through its infrastructure, system design and spatial permutations, which will continue to evolve as it moves from space to space. To date it has progressed through The Douglas Hyde Gallery (Dublin), Le Printemps de Septembre (Toulouse) and Secession (Vienna) before the current exhibition at Void.

A Visibility Matrix is funded by the Arts Council of Ireland / An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
