  • Raising the Standards of Fundraising in NI Workshop

18 January 2017, 1:30-4:30pm
Holywell DiverseCity Community Partnership

This free workshop facilitated by the Institute of Fundraising Northern Ireland and funded by the Halifax Foundation for NI will inform and educate on fundraising codes of best practice and self-regulation for any charity involved in fundraising. There are a number of workshops running across Northern Ireland with this one being in the North West.

The purpose of this project is to develop best practice standards and compliance with self-regulation in fundraising across the charity sector in Northern Ireland. This workshop will provide guidance and support to charities to understand implications of fundraising self regulation and grow best practice with trustees, staff and volunteers and essentially those who benefit from charity services such as supporters, donors and funders of charities.

Participants will get the chance to learn about developing their fundraising best practice and compliance with legal obligations as well as benefitting from being more aware of the legal and reputational risks to fundraising practice and understand better their responsibilities.

Numbers are limited for this event so early booking is advisable:

  • Free Basic book-keeping for small charities

24 January 2018, 7:00pm to 9:30pm
Holywell DiverseCity Community Partnership

A free two hour practical workshop for treasurers, or those that keep the financial records, of small charities to help them establish appropriate financial systems.

Good financial management is an integral part of ensuring good governance as it not only helps charity trustees to fulfill their legal duties but also helps to protect the charity from mismanagement of funds.  Having robust financial procedures in place will help to improve organisational capacity and effectiveness.

The focus of this workshop will be on basic bookkeeping and financial management including setting up and maintaining the books (cash book, cheque ledger, petty cash); cash handling, understanding charity funds and accounts and the role of the treasurer.

As we’re expecting a lot of demand for this training, we’re limiting places to one per organisation in the first instance and holding a waiting list for other interested members of the organisation.

Kindly supported by Halifax Foundation for Northern Ireland.

6 BrexitLawNI Townhall Event at Magee

Brexit Townhall

Great Hall, Magee Campus, Ulster University

December 7th, 1.00-2.30

RSVP: https://getinvited.to/rory-oconnell-1471271248/brexit-townhall/

Welcome at 1.00 by the Provost of Magee, Dr Malachy Ó Neill

How will Brexit affect you? What are your priorities? Brexit will affect Northern Ireland more so than anywhere else: how should we shape a Brexit suited to our particular circumstances?

This Townhall will gather evidence about Brexit and consider possible solutions, as part of the BrexitLawNI project. Brexit has an impact on the Border and cross-border migration on the island of Ireland; it has implications for North South relations and the peace process; and exit from the European Union will also have repercussions for socioeconomics rights, equality and broader human rights protections.

Researchers from the BrexitLawNI project will discuss the background and outline some of the key issues and concerns. Views from the audience will be invited on all these and there will be an opportunity to identify possible solutions.

We welcome all participants potentially affected by Brexit, including public representatives, civil society, trade unions, workers, migrants, and employers.

This is a collaborative ESRC-funded research project between the Law Schools of Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University and the region’s leading human rights organisation, the Committee on the Administration of Justice (CAJ). The project will examine the constitutional, conflict transformation, human rights and equality consequences of Brexit and specifically six themes: the peace process, North/South relations, the border and free movement, xenophobia and racism, socioeconomic rights, human rights and equality.

For more on the BrexitLawNI project visit:

8 Your FREE guide to GDPR from Voluntary Arts

Briefing 173: GDPR - Data Protection

The introduction of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) in May 2018 is fast approaching and has resulted in a lot of scare stories and concern among the charitable and voluntary sectors about what this will mean. While the new laws are a significant update on existing data protection legislation and the level and potential for fines will increase, there is no need for widespread panic just yet.

Much of what is introduced by the GDPR is about taking a sensible approach to protecting individual's rights in the contemporary digital world we live in. This latest Briefing from Voluntary Arts gives you a simple guide to what the new legislation will mean for charities, voluntary and community groups.

Our simple guide explains in plain English:

  • What GDPR covers
  • Types of data
  • Principles of GDPR
  • Definitions of key terms
  • Individuals' rights
  • The steps you need to take
  • FAQs (including mailing lists, children's rights and photography)

With less than six months to go until GDPR becomes law, now is the time to read through this guidance and determine what steps your organisation needs to take to ensure you are compliant by 25 May 2018.

 Circus For Everyone

In Your Space Circus, with support from The Executive Office, has developed a unique and innovative good relations programme for children and young people aged between nine and fifteen years. This programme, called Circus for Everyone, uses circus skills to creatively engage young people in a healthy and fun activity in order to increase their self-esteem and resilience. It is an activity that appeals to a broad range of participants because it has no alignment with a particular gender, age, racial group or community background.

Alternatively, the Circus for Everyone programme can be a way for your organisation to reach out and work with another group. We can provide the means by which pupils/participants from different schools/groups can come together and, through shared experience to learn about diversity, tolerance and challenge stereotypes in a creative and fun environment.  Circus for Everyone is perfect if you are trying to engage your children and young people in wider community activities.

This project is open to schools, community groups and cultural organisations within the greater Derry-Londonderry Area. However, we only have room for a few groups next term so if you are interested or would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me. You can send an email Cara@inyourspaceni.org or call our office on 028 7137 7113.

Open Digital Badges and Learning Map**

Open Digital Badges is a standard to recognise and verify learning and achievements. They are digital micro-credentials that may represent identity, interests, competences and achievements across the web. Learning Map is an innovative tool which uses Open Badges to allow users to create their own personal map of learning achievements and competences that you have. For educators, they can present in a visual way what competences learners can achieve and what will be the learning flow of the programme.

**Please bring a laptop with you for this workshop

Digital Storytelling as a tool for addressing conflict

Digital Storytelling is a tool to tell different kind of stories - the approach encourages young people - or adults - to tell the stories they feel are most relevant and share them respectfully inside their community, and beyond.  This workshop will help you explore its relevance and show you how you can connect the dots in terms of applying it to the local context.  This workshop will offer examples of practice from the Balkans and help you build upon potential ideas you might have for engaging people in Storytelling.

'Silva Lining': Learning Experience Design in Youth Work

Based on the work of the vastly experienced International Trainer, Anita Silva, participants will benefit from a 'short, sharp' introduction to Learning Experience Design in youth work. The workshop will demonstrate how  to design engaging, immersive and vibrant learning experiences for young people.

13   Human Rights Festival 2017 at Eden Place Arts Centre

Following on from the success of the first ever Human Rights Festival in Derry in 2016, Eden Place Arts Centre and Amnesty International (Foyle Branch) have again teamed up to present:

Celebrating Defenders of Land, Territory and Environment

Human Rights Festival 2017.

Moved by the tragic murder of Indigenous leader and environmental activist, Berta Caceras in 2016 The festival will use Art, Photography, Discussion and Film to highlight the plight of Indigenous communities and Environmental activists as they protect their lands and environment.

Before her assassination in 2016, Berta Cáceres, Indigenous leader of The Lenca People and General Co-ordinator of The National Council of Popular and Indigenous Organisations of Honduras led a campaign of peaceful resistance against the Agua Zarca Hydro-electric Dam project, they succeeded in holding up the project, prompting the withdrawl of International engineering and finance companies.

Berta’s daughter, Bertha Zuniga Cáceres, equally at risk, now calls for the suspension of EU aid to Honduras until the government shows a political will to resolve the human rights violations and land conflicts.

Likewise in Cambodia a state of impunity exists, with the ruling Cambodian People’s Party maintaining tight control over the judiciary, resulting in the criminal justice system being used to harass and intimidate Human Rights Defenders.

Despite the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Convention on Indigenous people’s rights we hear from indigenous peoples “We are defending our land with our blood”. Worldwide the numbers of Human Rights Defenders killed increases year on year.

The Festival will include local documentary film maker Chris Kelly’s ‘A Cambodian Spring’

This documentary is a powerful reminder of the plight often suffered by those less fortunate in the name of progress. Shot over 6 years, it offers us chapters into the lives of some residents around Boeung Kak Lake and the devastation of their communities at the hands of a corporate entity that has the weight of the Cambodian government behind it. A Cambodian Spring will be screened on Friday 8th December @ 7pm in The Nerve Centre.

Mural Launch
On Saturday 9th December @12 noon will be a mural launch on the hoarding in front of the former Pound Stretcher Store on Bishops Street. The mural has been created by young people from Pilots Row and Bishops Street Youth Clubs who have been working with local graffiti arts organisation UV Arts to deliver an exciting street art project to highlight the environmental devastation caused by extractive industries and the struggle to protect the environment for future generations.

Honduras: Where The Blood Flows And The Rivers Are Dammed  Photographic exhibition by Sean Hawkey

Will take place on Saturday 9th December 2-3pm Exhibition Launch and Artist talk in Eden Place Arts Centre.

Before going freelance Sean Hawkey worked in Latin America for twelve years on post-war reconstruction and Indigenous land rights where he used photography and video for political advocacy work.

His photographs have been published widely in newspapers and magazines as well as being used by UN bodies and many Non-Government Organisations.

The photographs in this exhibition help people join up the dots: if you kill the people who protect the environment you’ll get an environmental crisis, and that leads to failing agriculture, food insecurity and scarcity of water, which leads to desperation, violence and migration. All these issues are closely linked.

On Saturday from 3-4.30pm there will be a Panel Discussion entitled:
From Impunity to Liability, Is it Possible?

The panel will include:
Sean Hawkey who will  speak about Indigenous land rights and how he uses photography and video for political advocacy work.

Ed O’Donovan from Frontline Defenders who will speak about the immensely practical support they provide to Human Rights Defenders at risk.

Niall Mc Aleer from ‘Save our Sperrins’ campaign who will speak about the tactics used by a Canadian Gold mining company in the Sperrins and the open invitation our government gave to this company to prospect in most of counties Tyrone and Derry.

15 FWIN Christmas Appeal 2017

As the run in to Christmas begins FWIN are once again asking people to remember the local families who are struggling at this time.

We are asking people to buy an extra present when Christmas shopping this year for families in need, for children aged 0 - 16 years. You can drop in a single item, wrapped or unwrapped  (stating clearly if it is for a boy or girl and what age group if it's wrapped). If you prefer to drop in a 'shoe box' or gift bag,  this will be fine as long as it is clearly labelled.

FWIN Co-ordinator, Catherine Cooke, said: "For most of us Christmas is a wonderful time of year full of fun and happiness, however for some local families it's a time of struggle and difficulty.

"We have held Christmas appeals for local families for the last few years and we know just how tough some people are finding things and the drastic need out there for appeals of this nature.

"In previous years when we've held this appeal we have been astounded by the kindness and generosity of the people of this area."

If you wish to drop in a wrapped gift it is important to label it stating if it is for a boy or girl and what age they are:

0-2yrs                3-5yrs             6-10yrs
10-12yrs            13-14yrs        15 -16yrs

All gifts can be dropped off at:
The Holywell Building
8 - 14 Bishop Street
Derry/Londonderry
BT486PW

The gifts will be distributed throughout the city and district by local charities.

www.sailtrainingireland.com, email info@sailtrainingireland.com or call 01 816 8866. For other voyage opportunities see the full voyage calendar on the site. No experience is necessary. #spiritofasgard
