Brexit opens up the space to decide together what kind of country we want to be and what this means for our food, where it comes from and the countryside we share and enjoy.

People care about where their food comes from, how it is produced and how it affects their health and wellbeing. They believe the government should do its job, making sure that what they can buy really is safe and healthy for people, compassionate for animals, and sustainable for soils and biodiversity.
Second, they challenge the idea that ‘food poverty’ is best addressed by making food cheaper. Poverty is poverty. In rural areas, the cost of living can be up to 30 percent higher than in towns. If people can’t afford basic goods and services – food, housing, heating, transport – then the answer must be in getting a better balance between the price of goods, the provisions of services and basic incomes.

If you care about these issues then come along and be part of a conversation with the issues raised informing a major report being prepared by the RSA to be submitted to the UK government in March 2019.

AWARE – 2 day Mental Health First Aid Training Course

First aid as we know it is the help given to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) differs only in that it is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or who is in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves.

The course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to deal with a situation in which someone is experiencing difficulties in regards to mental health and how to deal with a situation in which someone is in crisis. The role is a supportive and signposting role, much like a physical first aider, whose training allows them to keep the individual safe and out of harm and either contact the right support organisation or signpost them to onward support and help.

MHFA aims are to:

  • Preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others
  • Provide help to prevent the mental health problem becoming more serious
  • Promote the recovery of good mental health
  • Provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem

MHFA teaches participants:

  • How to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems
  • How to provide initial help
  • How to go about guiding a person towards appropriate professional help

Topics covered include:

  • What is meant by mental health / mental ill health?
  • Dealing with crisis situations such as suicidal behaviour, self-harm, panic attacks and acute psychotic behaviour
  • Recognising the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems including depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis and substance use disorders
  • Where and how to get help
  • Self-help strategies

Why MHFA?

  • Mental health problems are common – the most common of these is depression which will affect 1 in 4 people in the course of their life
  • There is stigma around mental health problems and this can prevent people seeking help
  • People generally don’t know how to recognise mental health problems or what help is available
  • People with mental health problems may be unable to think clearly and may not realise they need help or that effective help is available. They may be in some distress and would benefit from the support of an individual with the awareness and confidence to respond calmly
  • Professional help is not always immediately available
  • In a mental health crisis situation, the helper’s actions may determine how quickly the person gets appropriate professional help

Dates:              17th and 18th January 2019
Times:             9.30am-4.30pm
Venue:            St. Columb’s Park House, Limavady Road, Derry/Londonderry
Cost:                £100 per person
