Engagement Event: Medical School in the NW with UU

Friday 06th October 2017

10am

DiverseCity Community Partnership

NWCN has invited Professor Hugh McKenna, Dean of Medical School Development at Ulster University to hold an engagement session with members of the community and voluntary sector to discuss plans for the creation of a Medical School based in the NW.

The establishment of a new medical school is a complex process involving both government and General Medical Council approval.  The University secured all-party support for the proposal from the Northern Ireland (NI) Assembly in November of last year and are in the process of finalising an Outline Business Case and working with the GMC on the accreditation process.

The proposal is for a four-year graduate entry programme (GEMS), with an annual cohort of 60 students (increasing to 120 over a five year period) and a planned first intake in September 2019. The provision will cover the full GMC curriculum and it is envisaged that Ulster’s programme will have a primary care and chronic disease management focus, along with an element of cross-border collaboration.

There is no doubt that a medical school will have both academic and financial benefits for the NW as well as providing a supply of medical professionals for the health service in the West.  The proposal will require a range of support and endorsements, and given the significant work of the voluntary sector in promoting health & well-being through public health approaches it might be an opportunity to build some linkages for the future.

The meeting is scheduled for Friday 6 October 2017 at 10am in the Holywell Building (Stephen Connelly Room) on Bishop St.

Could you please indicate if you are attending by e-mailing
neola@nwcn.org or calling 028 7127 9090

4 Future Advertising of PHA Funding Opportunities

From 1 October 2017,  the PHA will no longer advertise funding opportunities in regional or local newspapers.

From this date, the PHA will advertise social care tender opportunities and grant funding awards on its website www.publichealth.hscni.net.  Above threshold tenders (above £589,147) will also be advertised directly on the procurement web portal www.etendersni.gov.uk.

Accessing Application Documentation

  • For below EU Threshold Social Care procurements (below £589,147 in value) and all grant funding opportunities, providers will be able to access the appropriate application documentation directly from the PHA website.
  • For above EU Threshold Social Care Procurements (over £589,148 in value) providers will be directed to the procurement web portal eTendersNI, at https://eTendersNI.gov.uk.

Potential service providers should familiarise themselves with the eTendersNI portal and register as soon as possible.

A guide on how to access Prior Information Notifications (PINS) that alert you to possible tender opportunities and on how to register on eTendersNI is provided below.

https://view.pagetiger.com/eTenders/PaLS

Please note Providers must download the portal’s tender preparation tool (20.1MB).This tool is a software application that providers must download initially from the eTendersNI portal in order to draft and submit their tender response. Providers are advised to do this well in advance as this can take time to download.

CPV codes - When providers first register on the portal there is an option to choose a Common Procurement Vocabulary (CPV) code(s) that they are interested in. We would advise you to select a broad range of CPV codes in the first instance and filter/refine at a later stage. The system will then notify you via email when tenders relating to your chosen CPV codes are advertised. However, it is still advisable to check the portal regularly for tender opportunities.

Note - The Public Contract Regulations set out the CPV codes which are relevant to Health and Social Care Services; the full list of CPV codes can be downloaded from https://simap.ted.europa.eu/cpv in an Excel form.

8 A Basic Income: A Future with Dignity

Saturday 7th October 2017

St Columb’s Park House Derry 1-5pm

What would you do if your income were taken care of?

Basic Income Ireland invites you to an afternoon of information sharing and conversation on the possibility of paying every citizen a living wage every year of our lives. Speakers will introduce the concept of a Basic Income as a real alternative to the welfare system and a solution to the mechanisation of work, a solution which allows people to live with dignity.

Speakers

People potential in a basic income world

Lucy McKenna is a learning design specialist focused on helping people create a life of purpose and fulfilment. She is endlessly curious on how the working world is changing, and its impact on our sense of self. ’While there are many political and economic changes that must happen for basic income to become a reality, there is also a human aspect which we must consider.  In this talk we will discuss the opportunities that basic income can unleash for individuals, the shifting view of what work is, and what we as individuals can do now to prepare ourselves, and others for a time when Basic Income is a reality.’

Dignity and Creative Capabilities

Mary Mc Manus has been working in the advice sector for 20 years and currently manages East Belfast Independent Advice Centre. She is interested in social justice and a fairer society where everyone has a decent standard of living.  ‘I will outline how the current state of the Social Security System in the North by the use of a few case examples from the Advice Centre where I work.  These examples will demonstrate the inadequate income people are forced to live on, the conditionality and punitive nature of the system and how this impacts on dignity. I will briefly examine some of the costs of this system and who actually benefits from it.  I will then outline why I believe that UBI is part of an alternative to this present system that can restore some dignity and creative capabilities to people.’

Living on a basic income - a year of 'what if?'.

Neil Hutcheson is a documentary photographer interested in people and their identity in the context of ‘work’. ‘In the context of Basic Income as a means to pursue a more fulfilling lifestyle, what if you were able to try your own 'Basic Income' pilot for a year?

It's taken sacrifice, it's bred self-doubt and forced the use of unpronounceable muscles - it has not been easy. But was it worthwhile and is life now more, fulfilling?

In this talk we'll look at the story of someone who simply attempts to create the conditions of life with a basic income.’

An overview of Basic Income

Anne Ryan is a coordinator of Basic Income Ireland; she advocates policies of sufficiency as a means to bring about sustainable society and economy. I will give an overview of basic income: what it is, possible ways to fund it, why it is desirable in society in general.’

10 Invitation to NICCY Seminar: Cost of Education on 19 October 2017

Koulla Yiasouma, Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People, invites you to the above seminar.

Thursday 19 October 2017 from 1pm to 4pm, including lunch

East Belfast Network Centre

On 1 September 2017 the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People (NICCY) published a report into the Cost of Education which highlighted the average costs paid by Northern Ireland parents/guardians in relation to their children’s education.  The report found that a high proportion worry about finding the money to cover these costs, some of whom get into debt in order to meet them.  Child poverty and education are two of NICCY’s key priority areas of work.

NICCY is holding a seminar to launch the findings of the Cost of Education research report with a particular focus on Child Poverty, to coincide with International Day for the Eradication of Child Poverty.  As well as launching the findings of the report, the seminar will examine education funding in Northern Ireland, consider the impacts of the Cost of Education on the education of all but particularly children in poverty.  A panel of experts will lead a lively discussion with attendees on the findings of the report and examine education funding in Northern Ireland with a view to greater future sustainability in education.

The seminar will begin with lunch at 1pm.  Attendance is by invite only, however if you are unable to attend please feel free to suggest a colleague to attend in your place.

Places are limited so please confirm your attendance via https://niccycostofeducation.eventbrite.co.uk by Monday 16 October 2017.

A more detailed programme for the event will be circulated to those who have confirmed attendance in due course.
