2 New fund to enhance Community-led Tourism experiences

A new fund will open in September to support Community-led tourism within the City and District, aiming to further develop the region’s unique culture and heritage tourism offering.

The support is being offered through a one off infrastructure fund under the Natural Connections Peace Tourism Project which is supported by the PEACE IV Programme administered through Derry City and Strabane District Council. Two special information sessions will now take place on September 9th to offer guidance on applications.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Michaela Boyle, encouraged local community and tourism groups to consider applying.

“This is a great opportunity for individuals or organisations based in the Derry and Strabane Council area involved with Community-led tourism,” she stressed.

“As part of the Tourism Strategy for the City and District we want to connect visitors with authentic experiences and local people who can tell our story. The Peace Tourism project has an important role in bringing communities together and ensuring that all aspects of our culture and history are represented.

“We also want to support local businesses and organisations working within the tourism industry who can add to the diversity and quality of our local visitor attractions and experiences. I would really encourage anyone working in this area to come along to the information sessions and find out how this fund could benefit you.”

This funding stream is only available this financial year 2019 – 2020, so it presents a one off opportunity for local groups, individuals or organisations particularly those belonging to the PEACE IV Peace Tourism Project Steering Group or have participated in the PEACE IV Peace Tourism Development Programme.

Tourism project officer with Council Linzi Simpson explained a bit more about the Peace Tourism scheme. “The aim of this project is to bring together community, cultural and historical tourism, mainstream tourism and facilitators in the good relations field to produce, pilot and promote ‘Peace Tourism’ experiences suited to local, national and international demand. These experiences will be shaped by local expertise and will help explore issues of conflict and reconciliation.

“We also want the Derry and Strabane Council area to become established as a base for local, regional and international field trips and residential and training/awareness for the benefit of dialogue and peacebuilding.”

The sessions will take place in the Whittaker Suite of the Guildhall on September 9th from 10am – 11am and 6pm – 7pm. Anyone working within the tourism industry who has an interest in building on and developing their authentic Community-led tourism experiences is welcome to come along.

8 Researchers on identity and rights seeks interviewees

We are a team of researchers from Newcastle University and the University of Birmingham conducting a study on the impact of Brexit on governance and identities in Northern Ireland. This research examines the ways in which Brexit has impacted peoples’ everyday senses of themselves and their rights, and how they are navigating any changes that arise from these impacts.

At the minute, people interact with and experience their EU, UK, and Northern Irish citizenship(s) in a variety of ways. Brexit will mean significant changes politically and personally, and will affect people in different ways. We are interested in how these changes come about. For instance, eventually actions such as holding or refusing to hold an Irish passport by people who self-identify as British could transform the nature of society, citizenship and governance in Northern Ireland.

Our team will be over in Northern Ireland between the 9th and 13th of September, and we would like to interview people from a range of backgrounds. Participation in this research is entirely voluntary, and the interview will explore how individuals understand and approach their own experiences of citizenship and identity in Northern Ireland. Anyone choosing to participate will be anonymised in order to protect their identity.

If you have any queries about this, please feel free to get in contact with Claire McCann
claire@humanrightsconsortium.org or with Megan Armstrong megan.armstrong@newcastle.ac.uk for further details.

9  No To No Deal Brexit - Campaign Launch

The Human Rights Consortium, alongside NICVA, UNISON, NUS-USI and several other civic society organisations, launched the No To No Deal campaign. Given the startling impact on human rights in Northern Ireland and across the UK, we feel that a No Deal outcome will be a disaster.

Many organisations within civic society clearly feel the same and have been strenuously making the case about the impacts of No Deal. As a result, the real-world impacts on Northern Ireland of No Deal have begun to filter into the media and the wider debate about Brexit.

A No Deal Brexit would inflict major damage to our community and to future generations in Northern Ireland; with profound implications for our economy and society. The No To No Deal campaign therefore calls on the UK government to accept that a No Deal Brexit is not a viable option and to do everything in its power to prevent this possibility as a matter of urgency.

We call on all members of the public and civil society, regardless of your view of Brexit, to support our campaign and say NO TO NO DEAL.

We are seeking support or backers for a No to No Deal campaign. The concept is simple. Any organisation, (individuals can be involved but we are only officially tracking organisational support) whether they were leave, remain or neutral in the Brexit referendum, can be involved if they are opposed to a No Deal outcome and can support the campaign by signing up
here.

How To Get Involved:

If you want to sign up to our statement and have your organisation added to the list of supporters, please email getlisted@notonodeal.org.

If you have any questions or queries about this campaign, please contact Kevin Hanratty, kevin@humanrightsconsortium.org.
